My name is Maria A. Perlaza Ortiz, and I am a Black Hispanic woman born in Cali, Colombia, now living in the United States with my mother and daughter. I am a certified commercial pilot, flight instructor (CFI/CFII), and a current Business Management student at Spartan College, working toward my bachelor’s degree. My aviation journey has been unconventional and deeply meaningful. As someone who grew up without role models in the cockpit who looked like me or spoke my language, I’ve made it my mission to break those barriers. Through my social media platforms, I reach thousands of people, especially young minorities, who are inspired by seeing a bilingual Colombian woman flying and teaching others to fly. I have volunteered at local flight schools, taken youth on discovery flights, and continue to build my skills through solo teaching camps and international aviation exploration. I plan to combine my aviation experience and business education to one day open a bilingual flight school, a private travel company, or a global Airbnb-based venture that allows me to reinvest in underserved communities, especially in Latin America. Everything I do is rooted in faith, driven by purpose, and fueled by the hope I see in my daughter’s eyes when she watches me fly.

José Ventura and Margarita Melendez Mexican-American Scholarship Fund
Being a first-generation college student is more than a title; it’s a torch I carry with pride. As a Black Hispanic woman born in Cali, Colombia, now living in the United States, I proudly embrace my roots as a Latina and the first in my immediate family to walk the path of higher education. Though I’m not of Mexican descent, I deeply relate to the spirit of José Melendez. His selfless devotion, sacrifices, and unwavering belief in the power of education resonate with me on a profound level.
Coming to this country as an immigrant and raising a daughter while pursuing a career in aviation and a bachelor’s degree in business management has been one of the most challenging yet transformative experiences of my life. Every obstacle I’ve faced, language barriers, financial hardship, and cultural expectations, has only strengthened my resolve to break generational cycles and build a better life, not only for myself but for my family back home in Colombia and my daughter here in the U.S.
My passion for being a first-generation college student stems from the belief that I represent the hopes of many who never had the chance. My parents worked incredibly hard and gave up their dreams so I could pursue mine. My mother is here with me now, supporting me while I juggle school, work, and parenting. My father stayed in Colombia, where resources are limited, but his wisdom and values never left me. The fact that I am now earning my college degree while also serving as a commercial pilot and flight instructor is something I never imagined possible, but it’s exactly what makes this journey so meaningful.
I’ve never taken the privilege of education for granted. Every time I open a textbook or submit an assignment, I’m reminded of how many people in my community, especially women, never get the opportunity. As a first-generation student, I feel a deep responsibility to not only succeed for myself but to be a light for others. I volunteer my weekends at aviation camps for youth, many of whom are from minority or low-income backgrounds. I take them up in the air and teach them about aviation, hoping to plant the same seed that was once planted in me. I also use my social media platform to reach many different individuals, most of them young Latinas and first-gen students, with messages of empowerment, education, and faith.
Being Mexican-American or Latina in America often means carrying the weight of expectations, navigating identity, and constantly pushing past systemic barriers. But it also means having deep roots, strong family values, and an unmatched drive to thrive. We know how to stretch a dollar, how to rise after failure, and how to lead with heart. I see myself not just as a student but as a bridge between worlds, a voice that proves it’s possible to be a pilot, a mother, a businesswoman, and a woman of color creating generational change.
This scholarship would be a tremendous support as I continue toward my bachelor’s degree while raising my daughter and mentoring others. It would also be an honor to receive an award that carries the legacy of a man who believed, like I do, that education can transform lives. I carry that same fire. I am determined to use my degree, my profession, and my purpose to uplift others, especially those who, like me, are writing a new chapter for their families, one filled with courage, opportunity, and hope.
FLIK Hospitality Group’s Entrepreneurial Council Scholarship
As a Black Hispanic woman born in Colombia, raised in an immigrant household, and now a commercial pilot and business student, I’ve come to realize that leadership in any field, whether it’s aviation, hospitality, or wellness, requires intentionality. It means choosing to lead in a way that uplifts not just your career, but your community. Over the next five years, I intend to use my growing platform, entrepreneurial vision, and wellness-centered approach to create positive environmental impacts both locally and globally.
One of my greatest passions is hospitality, not just in the traditional sense of service, but in how we welcome people, how we nourish them, and how we treat the environments we serve them in. As someone currently earning a Bachelor’s in Business Management with experience in aviation, education, and real estate (including Airbnb), I see an incredible opportunity to innovate in sustainable hospitality. My future business plans include developing eco-conscious travel accommodations and launching a wellness-focused hospitality brand that prioritizes renewable energy, local sourcing, and inclusive guest experiences.
For example, through my background as a Superhost on Airbnb in Los Angeles, I’ve seen firsthand how travel and hospitality can either positively or negatively impact a neighborhood’s environment and culture. I plan to acquire properties in underserved areas both in the U.S. and internationally that are transformed into boutique, wellness-inspired stays. These properties would incorporate green infrastructure, partner with local farmers and artisans, and offer guests culturally immersive experiences rooted in community respect. As a Colombian, this is particularly close to my heart: I want to invest in my home country and introduce travelers to its beauty while preserving its resources and creating local job opportunities.
Simultaneously, I plan to use my marketing skills, especially my growing social media presence, to educate and inspire younger generations. With platforms on Instagram and TikTok, I’m already sharing my journey as a female pilot to motivate others to pursue careers in aviation and beyond. I will expand this platform to promote sustainability, financial literacy, and eco-friendly travel practices, bridging the gap between inspiration and action.
Wellness is another area where I will have an impact. As a single mom, pilot, and student, I understand how burnout affects both mental and physical health. I want to develop community workshops (virtual and in-person) centered on aviation wellness, especially for Black and Brown professionals working in high-stress careers. These programs would emphasize mindfulness, healthy lifestyle habits, and accessible nutrition because a healthy leader builds a healthy community.
In the next five years, I will also mentor youth from marginalized communities, helping them gain access to scholarships, aviation careers, and entrepreneurial tools. I’ve already begun this through volunteer work at flight schools, where I taught kids the basics of aviation and took them on introductory flights. In the future, I envision a nonprofit arm of my business that provides leadership and financial literacy training for students of color. I believe sustainability must extend to people, especially Black and Brown individuals who’ve been excluded from opportunity, and the best way I can serve is by combining my business knowledge, cultural identity, and passion for service to build businesses that give more than they take.
This scholarship would be a pivotal investment in that vision. It would help me continue my education, grow my entrepreneurial ventures, and expand my community impact. I am determined to create a world where hospitality isn’t just about serving others, it’s about healing our communities and our planet in the process.
All Chemical Transport Empowering Future Excellence Scholarship
My name is Maria A. Perlaza Ortiz, and I am a commercial pilot, certified flight instructor (CFI/CFII), and a Business Management student with 59 credit hours completed toward my bachelor’s degree. As a bilingual Black Hispanic woman born in Cali, Colombia, I never imagined I’d one day be in the cockpit of an aircraft, much less teaching others to fly. My aviation journey has not only changed my life it has also shaped my mission: to lead with safety, empower through innovation, and inspire transformation within the transportation and aviation industries.
What drives me to pursue this career is purpose. As a single mother, I want to build a future that provides stability and a legacy for my daughter. As a first-generation immigrant, I want to break generational barriers. As a professional woman of color in a male-dominated field, I want to open doors for others who have never seen someone like them wearing wings. These motivations are deeply personal, but my vision is global.
Aviation is an industry that thrives on innovation, yet it demands excellence in safety. Every takeoff and landing depends on precision, communication, and risk mitigation. As a flight instructor, I’ve internalized the responsibility of making safety non-negotiable not only for my students but for the passengers and lives they’ll one day carry. From preflight checks to weather assessments to emergency procedures, safety is woven into every decision I make. I view it not just as a requirement but as a core value.
Innovation, to me, is about improving what already exists while never compromising what protects people. Whether through advanced simulation training, data-driven flight planning, or promoting the integration of electric and fuel-efficient aircraft, I believe we can build a transportation future that is not only more efficient but also more sustainable and secure. In the future, I hope to contribute to the development of smarter training programs that utilize technology to improve pilot performance and reduce accidents. I also envision opening a bilingual flight school and eventually a private airline or travel company that prioritizes operational excellence and responsible travel practices.
What makes me stand out is the intersection I live in between cultures, between education and aviation, between innovation and service. I’ve already started building impact through social media, where I reach thousands of aspiring aviators, especially minorities and women. I use that platform to teach safety basics, share behind-the-scenes perspectives, and advocate for diverse representation in the cockpit. My presence alone challenges stereotypes and encourages others to consider aviation or transportation careers they may have never imagined for themselves.
I am committed to lifelong learning, which is why I’ve returned to college to earn my degree in Business Management. I understand that leadership in the transportation industry requires more than technical skill; it requires strategic thinking, ethical leadership, and the ability to inspire others to uphold high standards in innovation and safety. I’ve also participated in solo instructor development camps, explored international First Officer opportunities, and trained youth in aviation basics through volunteer programs.
My ultimate goal is to create programs and businesses that educate, employ, and elevate individuals across the globe while maintaining the highest levels of safety and operational excellence. I see myself as a changemaker someone who not only flies aircraft, but builds systems, businesses, and leaders that make transportation more inclusive, efficient, and safe. This scholarship would allow me to continue that journey, sharpen my skills, and further my education so I can lead boldly in the aviation and transportation industry for such a time as this.
Craig Huffman Memorial Scholarship
My name is Maria A. Perlaza Ortiz. I am a Black Hispanic woman, born in Cali, Colombia, and currently living in the United States with my mother and daughter. I am a certified commercial pilot, flight instructor (CFI/CFII), and a Business Management student with 59 completed credit hours. My story in aviation began not as a clear path, but as a leap of faith fueled by ambition, faith, and the drive to break barriers for others like me.
Growing up in Colombia, I never imagined I would one day fly an aircraft, let alone teach others how to fly. Aviation always felt like a distant dream, something reserved for people I didn’t see myself reflected in. It wasn’t until I moved to the United States that I saw the possibility for more. I fell in love with flying the first time I sat in a cockpit. The challenge, the precision, the freedom, it awakened something powerful inside of me. And ever since then, I’ve worked relentlessly to turn that dream into my life’s mission.
But flying is only one part of my journey. The heart of my story lies in leadership, leading by example, mentoring others, and using my platform to inspire those who’ve never seen someone like themselves in aviation. As a bilingual Black Latina, I’ve built a following through social media by showing what it means to rise through adversity with faith and resilience. I regularly share my journey to encourage young women and minorities, and I’ve had the privilege of flying my daughter, my mother, and extended family, transforming a once unimaginable vision into a reality for them, too.
Leadership, to me, is about service. I’ve volunteered at a local flight school to teach kids aviation basics and give them flight experiences they’ll never forget. I’ve supported students as a flight instructor not just in mastering maneuvers, but in building confidence and discipline. I’ve also worked to grow personally and professionally by attending solo instructor camps, seeking out international First Officer roles, and continuing my education to open a bilingual flight school or travel company one day. I want to create a space where young people, especially from underserved communities, can enter aviation with pride and purpose.
Craig Huffman’s legacy of mentorship, leadership, and diplomacy speaks to the very values I live by. I understand how powerful it is to have someone believe in you, and I strive to be that person for others. Whether I’m coaching students in a simulator, encouraging a young girl who has never stepped foot in a plane, or learning how to run a business that merges aviation and global travel, I do it with passion, vision, and integrity.
Receiving this scholarship would not only support my financial path forward in aviation, but it would help me continue honoring the legacy of mentors like Craig Huffman by lifting others as I climb. I am here not just to fly, but to lead, to teach, and to make sure the skies are filled with voices and faces that represent us all.
Future Green Leaders Scholarship
Sustainability should be a priority in every field, but especially in aviation and business, where the environmental footprint is significant and the opportunity to lead change is vast. As a certified flight instructor and entrepreneur pursuing a degree in Business Management, I see myself at the intersection of two high-impact industries. Aviation, while awe-inspiring and full of purpose, is one of the fastest-growing sources of carbon emissions. Business, on the other hand, influences the choices people make daily, what they buy, how they travel, where they stay, and how they live. When done responsibly, both fields have the potential to shift behaviors, reduce environmental harm, and inspire a more sustainable world.
My passion for sustainability is deeply rooted in stewardship. As someone who was born in Colombia, a country rich in biodiversity but deeply affected by environmental injustice and poverty, I have seen what happens when economic systems prioritize short-term gains over long-term care for people and the planet. I believe that if I am given the privilege of flight, entrepreneurship, and leadership, I also carry the responsibility to reduce harm and promote practices that preserve the earth for generations to come.
In aviation, sustainability starts with education. As a flight instructor, I can teach my students about efficient flight planning, fuel conservation, and embracing emerging technologies like electric and hybrid aircraft. I also see the future of aviation moving toward more eco-friendly innovations, including sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), lighter materials, and digital traffic management systems that reduce unnecessary fuel burn. I plan to be an advocate for these advancements and ensure my students are not only excellent pilots but also conscious aviators.
On the business side, I envision creating sustainable ventures that align with environmental values. Whether it’s running a flight school, launching a private travel brand, or expanding into global Airbnb properties, I want my operations to reflect eco-conscious practices. This means choosing energy-efficient facilities, reducing waste, supporting local and ethical suppliers, and educating clients and guests about sustainability. Even simple choices like switching to paperless booking, using solar panels, or sourcing biodegradable in-flight materials can compound into real change.
Social media is another powerful tool I use to promote awareness. My platform reaches thousands of aspiring pilots and young entrepreneurs, and I often share not just aviation tips but also personal reflections and values. I plan to use my influence to normalize eco-conscious aviation and encourage minorities, particularly women of color, to enter fields where they can lead the way in innovation and environmental stewardship.
In the future, I hope to collaborate with sustainable tech companies, promote carbon offset programs, and contribute to policies that move aviation and business toward cleaner, greener models. For me, sustainability is not just a buzzword it’s a mission. It’s how we honor the skies we fly and the earth we return to. And in my profession, I will make sure that progress never comes at the expense of the planet.
Neal Hartl Memorial Sales/Marketing Scholarship
My passion for sales and marketing comes from lived experience storytelling, connecting with others, and driving value through purpose. As a bilingual Black Hispanic woman born in Cali, Colombia, my path into aviation and entrepreneurship has been anything but traditional. I’ve navigated cultural gaps, language barriers, and systemic limitations, all while teaching myself how to build a brand and influence people through strategic communication. That journey has shown me that sales and marketing aren’t just about selling products; they’re about creating trust, solving problems, and offering people something they genuinely value.
I first discovered the power of marketing through my aviation career. As a commercial pilot and flight instructor, I used social media not only to document my journey but to reach and inspire others, especially young people from underrepresented backgrounds. I realized that every post, every story, and every video was an opportunity to market something bigger than myself: a vision of possibility, excellence, and inclusion. Without a formal marketing background at the time, I was already applying key principles of brand identity, audience engagement, storytelling, and emotional resonance to inspire thousands of people. Over time, my aviation content evolved into a business that generated over $10,000 in revenue through speaking, consulting, and digital influence. That real-world success showed me the impact effective marketing can have not just for companies, but for communities.
What truly excites me about sales and marketing is the opportunity to combine creativity with measurable results. I love developing strategies that solve problems, finding the right language to speak to people’s needs, and helping brands grow through authenticity. I see marketing as a bridge between vision and execution. It’s where ideas come to life and where people discover solutions they didn’t know existed.
I’m now pursuing a bachelor’s degree in Business Management because I want to formally develop my marketing and sales skill set. My long-term goal is to build businesses rooted in service and culture. Whether it’s opening a bilingual flight school, launching a travel company, or expanding my Airbnb ventures globally, I know that strong marketing will be at the heart of every success. I also want to use my platform to help other women, especially Black and Latina womenlearn how to market themselves confidently and effectively. My daughter is one of my biggest motivations. She watches me build and grow every day, and I want her to understand that success is not just about what you achieve, it’s about how you use your gifts to elevate others. Sales and marketing give me the tools to do that at scale.
Ultimately, I’m entering this field because I see it as a powerful force for connection, transformation, and empowerment. And I’m excited to continue learning, growing, and using my voice to make an impact one message, one story, and one strategy at a time.
