The nursing profession encompasses adaptability, flexibility, constant learning, teamwork, and a love for medicine, all of which I demonstrate while working as a Nursing Technician (NT). I have been a NT since 2015, and in my entire course working in the medical field, I have never experienced a higher rate of change in such a short time frame as I have during these past few years working alongside patients with COVID-19. In what seemed like the blink of an eye, my unit transformed from an orthopedic/ progressive care floor to a designated COVID-19 unit. Throughout the pandemic, I remained up to date with education associated with the virus and learned to readjust to numerous changes in policies and procedures revolving around controlling the spread of infection. Thanks to the never-ending education, growth, and experiences from this crisis, I became eager to continue my education and pursue a second bachelor's degree in nursing. It has been possible for nurses to step up, more than ever, during these unprecedented times due to their versatility and plasticity; this further inspires me to become a registered nurse and contribute to breaking down barriers to patient care. Becoming a nurse will equip me with the necessary education, along with a vast array of skills, to help treat patients across multiple domains where nurses are most scarce. I am determined to become a nurse and continue to treat patients with COVID-19, but with a greater scope of practice. For example, as a NT, I help nurses and respiratory therapists place a non-rebreather, high-flow nasal cannula, Venturi mask, CPAP, or BiPAP on patients. Even though I get exposure to different oxygen treatments, I want to be able to do more for my patients, such as directly administering antiviral medications and steroids to them. Throughout the years, I came to comprehend that it is vital to ensure everything possible is done to understand each patient's situation in the delivery of culturally competent, safe care. My goal as a nurse is to have a platform in which I can serve as an advocate for all patients and aid in treatment planning and inter-professional care coordination. There was a case that made me realize the seriousness of miscommunications in healthcare, specifically when there is a language barrier. I had a Spanish-speaking patient who informed me that she thought her wound vacuum was pumping muscle back into her leg; this is what she understood from the interpreter. I then educated her on the real purpose of the wound vacuum and informed the nurse of the misunderstanding; the nurse then made the doctor aware. Cases such as these make me more passionate about becoming a nurse and being able to implement a strong educational component in these types of situations, which my bilingual background will behoove both my patients and my culturally competent practice. Although I learn about different diagnoses and treatments, my current limitations regarding my scope of practice continuously affirm my desire to become a nurse. All of my experiences and interactions have left me wanting to do more and have a more substantial impact on patients. I will become an exceptional RN by combining my experiences as a NT, the medical knowledge I will gain in nursing school, and my heartily desire to serve the most needed. I will study diligently to become a competent nurse and help foster rapport in healthcare. As Cesar Chavez would have said, "Si, se puede!" meaning, "Yes, it can be done!" As a first-generation scholar, I also say si se puede, becoming a nurse is something that I can do!
