I am currently a sophomore engineering major at Auburn University, I'm driven to pursue a career in engineering, focusing on mechanical and biomechanical aspects. Helping others is where I find fulfillment, a principle I aim to uphold throughout my professional journey.
Mathematics and sciences have always been my forte, with calculus and algebra presenting intriguing puzzles to solve. Physics, too, fascinates me for its explanatory power. Engineering, I believe, is the gateway to understanding the mechanics of the world.
My passion lies in designing materials that aid bodily movement and rehabilitation, particularly in refining orthotics and prosthetics for athletes and injury recovery.

From the very beginning of my journey, I have been driven by a passion for understanding and improving the world through science and engineering. As a young child, witnessing the intricate machinery that kept my baby brother alive in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) sparked my curiosity and ignited a lifelong ambition to make a difference through Mechanical Engineering.
My childhood was marked by the desire to bring my premature brother, Patrick, home from the hospital. His struggle for survival instilled in me a deep appreciation for the role of machinery in sustaining life. I marveled at the complex systems of pumps, monitors, and circuits that regulated his vital functions. Witnessing the impact of mechanical interventions on my brother's life inspired me to pursue a career where I could leverage science and technology to help others overcome similar challenges.

My head lowered, and I avoided eye contact in fear of being asked the dreaded question, yet my grandmother, Emmy, proceeded to ask. As I responded, it seemed as if the room around me had shrunk, and the sounds had been amplified. I hated dancing. I quickly shook my head no, exaggerating my embarrassment. Then, I felt the warm touch of Emmy’s delicate fingers as she grabbed my hand and yanked me to the dance floor. Her radiant, contagious smile took over her face and forced a smile on mine, too. As she spun me around her finger, the world around me disappeared, and it was just she and I. Emmy was never afraid to dance like there was no tomorrow and remained positive even when she had no tomorrow.
Many years later, the tears I had previously withheld came streaming down like an overflowed dam gate at the sight of Emmy’s condition. She wiped my tears with her feeble fingers. Emmy insisted we only speak positively; we talked about our array of wonderful memories together. Her fragile voice, barely breaking audibility, still verbalized her joyful and humorous attitude. Emmy had been fighting pulmonary fibrosis for seven months, and her battle ended peacefully that night.
Every time I am hesitant to step onto the dance floor of life, every time I face an unfamiliar challenge, and every time I am full of self-doubt, I call on her, my Emmy, for the courage to face the challenges of life.
Future Leaders in Technology Scholarship - High School Award
I aspire to graduate with a Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering. What started as a little girl who longed to bring her baby brother home from the hospital, has now fully developed into a passion and purpose for Mechanical Engineering.
My brother, Patrick, was born severely premature at just 27 weeks. He struggled to survive
having to overcome brain bleeds, a heart issue, and underdeveloped lungs. Although I was
only approaching 3 years old at the time, I vividly recall all of the beeping medical
machinery and doctors in the Level III NICU unit that kept him alive for his long stay in the
hospital.
Most young children would be ambivalent about such intricate equipment, but instead, I was a keen observer trying to ascertain how the equipment worked. I recognized that this machinery helped keep my brother alive. What I witnessed was life saving-electrical circuits, automatic pumps, and medical equipment working together in perfect harmony to regulate his breathing, his heart rate, his feeding, the rate at which his medicine entered his body, and more.
I believe this experience is what inspired me to seek a future profession in the field of electrical or mechanical engineering. I would love to design, or further enhance, medical equipment as a profession. I am also interested in designing materials that aid the movement and rehabilitation of the body such as the design of orthotics, braces, and similar products for athletes.
I am beyond blessed to say my “baby” brother now towers over me at 6 feet tall and if you met him today, you would never believe his first years of life. My goal would be to aid sick or injured people, similar to how previous generations of engineers have given my brother a chance to survive and thrive. I know countless others can benefit from my work in mechanical engineering.
