Growing up, my experience was profoundly shaped by being raised by my father alone. My mother abandoned us when I was very young, and my dad took on both parental roles with incredible resilience and dedication. In my eyes, he has always been both my father and my mother, embodying the love and support that usually comes from two parents.
We lived in a small two-bedroom, one-bath house, in a sketchy neighborhood where safety was a constant concern. Because of this, I was rarely allowed to go outside. Despite the challenges, my dad worked long hours to ensure that our basic needs were met. His days were filled with exhaustion, but he never let that stop him from providing me with clothes, food, and opportunities to engage in extracurricular activities. Whether it was piano lessons, soccer practice, or horse riding, he made sure I had experiences that allowed me to grow and explore my interests.
Financially, we had very little, but my dad’s sacrifices were a testament to his commitment to giving me the best possible life under the circumstances. Before I was born, he had begun transitioning, but when he received the news from my mother that I was on the way, he was faced with a critical decision. He was told that if he didn’t take me in, I would be given up for adoption. In a moment of uncertainty, he turned to my grandmother, who had also been a single mother for a period. Her advice was clear: “Lindes don’t give up Lindes.” My dad heeded her words, paused his transition, and chose to raise me.
Growing up, I often reflected on how challenging it must have been for him to balance the roles of both parents while navigating his own transition. His strength and selflessness were constant reminders of his love and dedication. Even though he was not fully transitioned into the woman he had aspired to be during my childhood, he was always my mother in every meaningful sense of the word.
Now that I am in college, my dad has resumed his transition, but my perspective remains unchanged. To me, he has always been my mother in every way that mattered. His sacrifices, his love, and his unwavering support have shaped who I am today. They have instilled in me a deep sense of resilience, empathy, and determination. His example has inspired me to approach my own challenges with the same strength and commitment that he demonstrated throughout my childhood.
I applied for this scholarship not only to alleviate the financial pressures of being a first-generation college student but also to honor the legacy of strength and perseverance that my father has embodied throughout my life being my mother and father. This scholarship represents a crucial opportunity for me to continue my education without the constant stress of financial instability. It is a chance to further my academic and career goals, driven by the values and resilience that my father instilled in me.
Rivera-Gulley First-Gen Scholarship Award
My name is [Your Name], and my journey as a first-generation college student has been profoundly shaped by my experiences as a woman in STEM. From a young age, I faced significant challenges that have both tested and strengthened my resolve. One of the most formative experiences occurred in middle school when a science teacher dismissed my aspirations of becoming a robotic engineer solely because of my gender. Rather than discouraging me, this moment ignited a fierce determination to break down barriers and challenge stereotypes that limit potential based on gender.
This early encounter was not just a setback but a catalyst for my unwavering commitment to excel in my chosen field and support others facing similar obstacles. As I progressed through my education, this determination only intensified. I am now a senior at Arizona State University, working towards a Bachelor of Science in Engineering with a focus on robotics. Alongside my undergraduate studies, I am enrolled in a 4+1 program at the Thunderbird School of Global Management, where I am pursuing a Master’s in Global Management.
The path has not been without its hurdles. Even in college, I have encountered biases that question my competence and commitment. Frequently, I have been burdened with additional responsibilities or faced skepticism regarding my abilities. These challenges have only reinforced my resolve to excel and support others who are navigating similar struggles. My experiences have deepened my commitment to fostering an inclusive environment for women in STEM, which leads to my most ambitious goal: creating a nonprofit organization dedicated to making STEM education more accessible and supportive for young girls.
The nonprofit I envision aims to provide robotic kits and other STEM resources to underfunded schools, particularly those struggling with staffing shortages. By pairing these resources with mentorship from professionals in the field, I hope to offer guidance and encouragement to students, especially girls, who might lack the support I had growing up. The goal is to ensure that these young learners receive not only the tools they need to succeed but also the inspiration and belief in their potential that can make a profound difference in their academic and professional journeys.
My passion for this cause is deeply personal. Growing up, I lacked role models in STEM fields who looked like me. The scarcity of representation and support often left me feeling isolated and uncertain about my path. By establishing this nonprofit, I aim to bridge that gap and provide the mentorship and encouragement that I wished I had. I want to be the mentor who not only teaches but also inspires, demonstrating to young girls that they can achieve greatness despite the challenges they may face.
Currently, I support myself entirely through my studies, which is a significant financial strain. My father, who is dealing with financial difficulties due to my grandfather’s medical bills, is listed on my FAFSA but is unable to contribute to my education financially. This situation adds an additional layer of stress, making it challenging to focus solely on my academic and career goals. The financial strain often leaves me worrying about making ends meet and considering compromises on essential aspects of my education and well-being.
Receiving this scholarship would be a tremendous relief, significantly impacting my ability to continue pursuing my education without the constant financial anxiety that I currently face. It would alleviate some of the immediate financial pressures, allowing me to dedicate more energy and focus to my studies and starting my nonprofit initiative!

Elevate Women in Technology Scholarship
The year is 2031, schools are now booming more than ever with multiple ways to attend and even more, subjects to study. The one thing that draws everyone's attention is STEM. I hope in 10 years from now I am working on the minority gap and making sure it closes. With already the help I've done in the past few years (2017-2019) with Si Se Puede bringing stem to schools. I hope I can continue that but to reach out to more schools like Desert Sands and Estrella. The reason for starting stem with younger kids is they have more time to decide who and what they want to be. Most minorities don't have the same opportunities as others and often miss the pathways they can take because they think it is not available for them. The pathways are available for anyone and shouldn't have gender or race requirements and in 10 years I will open every door I can for these children to give them the opportunities I never had. I want to achieve these goals by first implementing it either using a nonprofit or private organization but soon take it to districts and statewide. With the help of other people but also students who may need internship hours or just want to help better the community and help others. If we don't work on the gap in STEM. I am only afraid it is going to get worse. It hasn't been easy for me to be female and going into a male-dominated career getting told I can't do certain things because I'm a girl. My gender should not be looked my experience and skills should be. I've wanted to give up but then I think about the kids I've shown step at HERD Elementry and how happy they were when the robot works. I think about all the lives I'm going to change and it keeps me going. Through college and after I will always work on this problem until it is nowhere to be seen.

When I got my first period it was a nightmare let me tell you that. The amount of embarrassment I had at the store could have killed someone. I don't think people truly know how hard it was for him. He dropped everything to raise me when my mom just walked away. He never went back to school, never became a comedian, and most of all he never got married. That's why I want to make him proud by attending college and getting a diploma so he can say look that's my little girl. My and I have had our ups and downs he never understands my obsession with clothing and horses but he has inspired me he's the reason I love legos, videogames, and most importantly STEM.
I don't think I would be going into the STEM field if it wants for my dad. When I was 10 I was told I couldn't go to MIT, that I was just a girl and wasn't allowed to like robots. My dad got so mad I was scared. He told the other person, who were they to crush my goal and that I was super smart and my gender doesn't defy whether I can or can not do something. From that moment on I knew I could do anything I want that the sky was the limit.
He has always been my number one and supported me even when I thought I could never do something. We have definitely gone through boy trouble but in the end, he was always there with a pint of ice cream and a hug. We also never had it easy growing up was tough my dad never asked for child support and made do with what he had, we lived and still live in an awful house, and yet he found a way to put food on my plate and clothes on my back. He is the reason why I want to get my degree to get a job and have a stable income because even though he was a superhero back then he shouldn't have had to go through what he did.
I think for me what hurts me the most is everything he did and sacrificed for me. I will never be able to pay him back for everything he has done for me but I can try my best to make him happy and proud. I know he is proud of me at the same time. He always talks to everyone about me and my robotics when he used to work in the office 7 years ago he had this photo of me on his desk. I made the photo frame in kindergarten so anytime I would go with him to the office I would touch the marbles glued onto the frame and wait. He always has some sort of photo of me either in his room, wallet, or office to show people me.
In the end, my father is a stubborn man whom most of the time hates asking for help when he needs it so I want to be able to help him whether he asks or not. I want to be there for him like he was for me. I know one day he will need me just like I needed him.
