Dr. Christine Lawther First in the Family Scholarship
Being the first in my family to earn a college degree is both an immense honor and a profound responsibility. It means that I am not only breaking generational cycles of limited opportunity but also paving the way for future family members to dream bigger and reach higher. I view this achievement as a tribute to the sacrifices of my parents and ancestors and as a promise to uphold their legacy of resilience. It is a tangible symbol of overcoming barriers and a daily reminder that with determination, we can redefine what is possible for our family.
I plan to pursue a degree in college, with a specific focus on supporting autistic children. From a young age, I have been drawn to the transformative power of education and its ability to nurture each student’s individuality. My passion for special education was ignited by hands-on experiences working with nonverbal autistic children. Through these experiences, I came to understand the unique challenges they face and the remarkable potential they possess. I have even taken proactive steps by creating and publishing Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) books designed to promote literacy and empower these children to express themselves. By pursuing a degree in special education, I aim to deepen my knowledge and refine my skills so that I can create inclusive, responsive learning environments where every child is given the tools to thrive.
My long-term goals are centered around making a lasting impact in the field of education by transforming the lives of students who are often overlooked. I aspire to become a dedicated and innovative special education teacher who not only addresses academic needs but also fosters confidence and self-worth in every student. In my future classroom, I envision a dynamic space where learning is tailored to individual strengths and where creativity and empathy guide every lesson. Beyond teaching, I hope to advocate for systemic changes in how educational resources are allocated and to work with policymakers and communities to ensure that children with special needs receive the support they deserve. Ultimately, I want to serve as a beacon of inspiration for both my family and my community, proving that barriers can be overcome and that every child has the potential to shine.
This journey is more than a personal accomplishment—it is a commitment to future generations. As the first in my family to attend college, I have taken the first step in bridging the gap between where we have been and where we can go. By pursuing a degree and dedicating my career to empowering autistic children, I am determined to not only honor the legacy of those who came before me but also to leave a legacy of my own. I want my work to create opportunities for others, to create environments where every child can experience the transformative power of education, and to inspire those around me to believe that no dream is too big to achieve.
Marie Humphries Memorial Scholarship
Ever since I was a child, I have believed that education possesses the power to transform lives—it shapes self-worth, sparks creativity, and fosters a sense of belonging. This belief took on a profound and personal meaning during my time at Lake Worth Middle School, where I had the privilege of learning under the guidance of Barry Grunow. Barry was not simply an educator; he embodied the true spirit of teaching. His unwavering commitment to his students was exemplified by the ultimate sacrifice he made—the moment he lost his life protecting a student—that has since fueled my passion for pursuing a career in special education.
Barry Grunow’s classroom was a sanctuary where every student was encouraged to explore their identity and potential. His methods went far beyond traditional instruction; he nurtured an inner spark in each student, teaching us that real education helps us discover who we truly are. His compassionate nature and innovative approach created an environment where learning was both safe and empowering. Even in the face of danger, Barry's response was not of fear but of protectiveness—a testament to how deeply he cared. When he bravely put himself in harm's way to shield a vulnerable student from danger, his selfless act resonated with all who knew him. This defining moment not only underscored the intrinsic value of every student’s life but also instilled in me the belief that a teacher’s influence extends far beyond academics.
My commitment to education grew even stronger as I began working with autistic children. I have spent countless hours alongside nonverbal autistic students, witnessing firsthand the unique challenges they face. These experiences opened my eyes to the need for individualized teaching strategies that honor each child's method of communication and learning. To contribute to this cause, I ventured into creating and publishing Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) books. These resources are designed to promote literacy and effective communication, giving nonverbal children a platform to express themselves. Every small breakthrough—from a hesitant gesture to an exuberant word—is a milestone that mirrors the incredible potential within each student.
In my future classroom, I aspire to recreate the nurturing and inclusive environment that Barry Grunow so passionately championed. I plan to integrate innovative instructional tools like AAC with personalized, compassionate teaching strategies to ensure that every student not only succeeds academically but also develops a deep, affirming sense of self. Barry’s legacy guides me daily, reminding me that true teaching is about making a lasting impact on a child’s life and safeguarding their right to feel seen, heard, and valued.
Choosing a career in special education is more than a professional decision—it is a calling inspired by the heroic example of Barry Grunow and my own hands-on work with autistic children. By following in his footsteps, I aim to honor his memory through a lifelong commitment to nurturing every student’s potential, ensuring that the light within them shines as brightly as his did.
RonranGlee Special Needs Teacher Literary Scholarship
I have always believed that teaching is far more than delivering academic content—it is about guiding each student toward a profound awareness of who they truly are. When Professor Harold Bloom said, “I have learned that the purpose of teaching is to bring the student to his or her sense of his or her own presence,” I understood that teaching must awaken a student’s inner light. To me, a sense of presence means recognizing one’s unique identity, strengths, and worth—a deep self-awareness that empowers students to overcome challenges and flourish in every aspect of life.
In my journey as a ASD paraprofessional teacher, I have chosen this path because I see the endless potential in every child, especially those who often feel misunderstood or overlooked. Many of my students may face communication challenges or struggle with traditional learning systems. My mission is to create an environment where these students can experience the fullness of their own presence through personalized learning, empathy, and creative expression. I use tailored strategies—ranging from visual aids and interactive activities to Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) tools—to meet each student’s unique needs. Every small breakthrough in communication or understanding is a step toward that illuminating sense of presence, where a child recognizes not only their abilities but also their right to be seen and heard.
My passion for this profession is fueled by witnessing firsthand the transformative power of education on children with special needs. I remember working one-on-one with a student who initially struggled to express himself. Through consistent encouragement, innovative teaching methods, and the use of AAC technology, I watched as he gradually began to communicate his thoughts and feelings. That moment, when he proudly shared an idea he had crafted, was a powerful reminder that every student has a unique light waiting to shine. Helping children like him overcome barriers and celebrate their individuality is what drives me every day.
To further illustrate my mission, I’d like to share a brief fairy tale from my heart. Once upon a time in the enchanted Forest of Presence, I set out as a guardian of light. In this magical realm, each child possessed a hidden spark—a unique glow dimmed by the shadows of doubt and isolation. My quest was to guide them into a secret garden where every bloom and glistening dewdrop whispered of their individual worth. One by one, I led a timid boy burdened by self-doubt and a bright girl overwhelmed by fear into the garden. With gentle guidance and creative tools, I helped them discover that their inner light could dispel even the darkest clouds. As their sparks ignited into brilliant flames, the entire forest lit up with messages of hope, resilience, and the undeniable power of being present. In that enchanted moment, I realized that my calling was to be the bridge between uncertainty and self-empowerment—a role that I embrace every day in my classroom.
This is why I am passionate about the special education teacher profession. My commitment is to bring every student to their sense of presence, nurturing their growth and celebrating their unique contributions. In doing so, I am not only teaching—they are learning to live fully, confidently, and beautifully as the individuals they are meant to be.
Live From Snack Time Scholarship
Ever since I was a child, I recognized that early childhood is a critical period when curiosity blossoms and the foundations for lifelong learning are established. My passion for early childhood education emerged from witnessing firsthand the transformative impact that nurturing, supportive environments can have on young learners. I have always believed that by investing in early education, we not only empower children to overcome challenges but also set the stage for a more inclusive and compassionate society.
My decision to pursue this field was deeply influenced by my experiences working with children, particularly those who are nonverbal and on the autism spectrum. Through volunteering and hands-on involvement in programs focused on autism support, I saw the value of specialized, individualized teaching methods. These experiences not only opened my eyes to the unique challenges that nonverbal children face but also inspired me to develop innovative tools to help them communicate and learn. One of my proudest achievements has been publishing AAC (Augmentative and Alternative Communication) books. These resources are designed to promote literacy and inclusion, giving nonverbal autistic children a voice and the opportunity to express themselves creatively. This work is not just a career choice—it is a personal mission driven by my commitment to ensure that every child feels seen, heard, and valued.
I plan to support early childhood development by creating engaging, inclusive classrooms that emphasize play-based and experiential learning. I believe that learning should be an adventure where children are encouraged to explore, experiment, and discover their interests in a safe and supportive environment. My approach involves integrating hands-on activities with tailored learning strategies so that every child, regardless of ability, can thrive. I intend to work closely with families and community stakeholders to design programs that address not only academic skills but also social and emotional development. By fostering an environment that celebrates diversity and adapts to each child’s unique needs, I hope to build a foundation that will propel them toward future success.
What truly made me decide on this field was my personal journey and the imbalances I observed in access to quality early education. Witnessing disparities firsthand, I became convinced that education is the great equalizer—a tool for change that can level the playing field for children from all walks of life. I grew up understanding that even amidst obstacles, early intervention and supportive education could open doors that might otherwise remain closed. This belief is the cornerstone of my commitment to early childhood education, and it drives me every day to be a catalyst for positive change.
Kristinspiration Scholarship
Education is deeply important to me because it is a powerful tool for creating opportunities and transforming lives. As a first-generation college student, I have experienced how access to education can break barriers and provide a pathway to a brighter future. For me, education is not just about acquiring knowledge—it is about fostering growth, building connections, and empowering others to reach their full potential.
My passion for education has been significantly shaped by my work with autistic children. Supporting these incredible individuals has taught me the value of patience, understanding, and the importance of tailoring learning to meet diverse needs. Each child I have worked with has shown me that no challenge is insurmountable with the right support, and their progress inspires me daily. These experiences have solidified my commitment to becoming an elementary school teacher specializing in working with students with diverse learning needs, particularly those on the autism spectrum. I want to create a classroom environment that celebrates each child’s unique strengths while fostering their confidence and curiosity.
The adversity I have faced has also shaped my perspective and strengthened my dedication to education. Growing up in a low-income household as a first-generation student presented significant challenges, from financial instability to navigating an unfamiliar academic path. Frequent relocations added to these difficulties, as I had to adapt to new schools and rebuild my sense of belonging repeatedly. The most difficult moment in my life came with the loss of my grandfather, whose guidance and encouragement had always been a source of strength. Despite these hardships, I learned to persevere, developing resilience and determination that continue to drive me forward.
Looking ahead, I aspire to leave a legacy of empowerment and compassion, shaped by my passion for education and my work with autistic children. My experience working with nonverbal autistic students has inspired me to create inclusive learning environments that celebrate diversity and promote meaningful connections. This inspiration led me to publish books designed to improve literacy and communication for children using Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC). Through these efforts, I aim to bridge gaps in education, making resources accessible for all learners and fostering a sense of belonging for students who communicate differently. My goal as an educator is to continue developing tools and strategies that promote inclusion and to empower students of all abilities to thrive academically and socially. By combining my passion for teaching with my dedication to advocating for autistic children, I hope to leave a lasting impact on the field of education and the lives of my students.
This scholarship is a crucial part of my journey toward achieving these goals. Overcoming adversity has been a constant theme in my life, and those experiences have shaped who I am today. Growing up as a first-generation college student from a low-income family, I have faced challenges that tested my resilience and determination. From financial instability to frequent relocations, my journey has been anything but easy. One of the most difficult periods was adjusting to the loss of my grandfather. His presence in my life had been a source of comfort and guidance, and his passing left a void that was hard to fill. Coupled with moving from school to school, I often felt like I was starting over, both academically and emotionally. Despite these hardships, I found ways to persevere, drawing strength from my family and developing a steadfast commitment to achieving my goals.
These experiences have played a significant role in shaping my aspirations. I have always been passionate about education, and I dream of becoming an ESE elementary school teacher, focusing on students from kindergarten through fourth grade within an ASD unit working with children with Autism. I want to create a classroom environment where young learners feel encouraged and inspired. My goal is to foster curiosity, creativity, and confidence in my students, guiding them to reach their full potential. I also aim to mentor and advocate for children who face their own adversities, providing the same support and encouragement that helped me overcome mine. In addition to earning my bachelor’s degree in primary education, I plan to pursue a master’s degree to deepen my knowledge and refine my teaching methods. Alongside my teaching career, I hope to contribute through extracurricular activities, such as tutoring, to give students the extra help they may need.

LGBTQ+ Wellness in Action Scholarship
Discrimination and prejudice can take a toll on one's mental and physical well-being, especially for LGBTQ+ students. Despite facing these challenges, many individuals in the LGBTQ+ community exhibit remarkable resilience in the face of adversity.
As an LGBTQ+ student, navigating the educational environment can be particularly challenging. The fear of discrimination, bullying, or exclusion can create significant stressors that impact overall wellness. The constant need to hide one's true identity or the pressure to conform to societal norms can lead to feelings of isolation and anxiety.
The lack of inclusive policies and support systems in educational institutions can further exacerbate these challenges. LGBTQ+ students may struggle to find safe spaces where they can express themselves freely without fear of judgment or discrimination.
Despite these obstacles, LGBTQ+ students demonstrate incredible resilience and strength. They refuse to be defined by the discriminatory attitudes of others and instead choose to embrace their authentic selves. By finding support within their community and advocating for inclusivity, LGBTQ+ students empower themselves and others to navigate the complexities of mental and physical wellness.
It is essential to recognize the unique experiences and challenges faced by LGBTQ+ students and to create a more inclusive and supportive environment within educational settings. By fostering a culture of acceptance and understanding, we can help LGBTQ+ students thrive and prioritize their mental and physical well-being. Navigating a world of grays can be difficult when you are flamboyantly filled with the rainbow. Societal nonconformity isn’t taken lightly in the world of gray. I created and self-published books in multiple languages to support the metal health of color for the LGBTQ+ community. LGBTQ+ books van help individuals to share their stories, experiences, and perspectives with a wider audience. This can help reduce feelings of isolation, provide a sense of empowerment, and contribute to a more inclusive and supportive community. By fostering a culture of acceptance, understanding, and self-expression, we can create a more inclusive environment where LGBTQ+ students feel supported, valued, and empowered to prioritize their mental and physical well-being. Creating a more inclusive and supportive environment within educational settings is crucial for the well-being of LGBTQ+ students. By recognizing and addressing the unique experiences and challenges they face, we can help them thrive both mentally and physically. LGBTQ+ students often face discrimination, bullying, and lack of support in educational settings, which can have a detrimental impact on their mental health. By acknowledging their experiences and challenges, we can create a more empathetic and understanding environment that promotes their well-being.
One way to create a more inclusive environment is to provide resources and support specifically tailored to LGBTQ+ students. This can include LGBTQ+ support groups, gender-neutral restrooms, and inclusive curriculum that reflects diverse identities. Acknowledging the unique experiences and challenges of LGBTQ+ students is crucial. Creating inclusive, supportive educational environments is key to helping them thrive and maintain their well-being. In a world often seen in shades of gray, living authentically as a rainbow can be challenging. Societal nonconformity is not easily accepted. To support the mental health of the LGBTQ+ community, I have created and self-published books in various languages. These books enable individuals to share their stories, experiences, and viewpoints, broadening understanding and empathy. Creating a blog and self-publishing books has supported my mental health by aiding others in need. Knowing they are not alone, knowing I myself am not alone in my walk down the rainbow brick road.
