My passion for special education began in middle school when I joined a peer helpers class. At the time, I did not fully realize how much the experience would shape my future, but it quickly became one of the most meaningful parts of my school day. Through the class, I had the opportunity to work closely with students with disabilities, help them during activities, and simply spend time getting to know them. What started as a class eventually became the reason I discovered the career I wanted to pursue. One of the biggest things that stood out to me during that experience was how important patience, encouragement, and understanding were for students’ success. I saw firsthand how much confidence students gained when they felt supported and included. Even small accomplishments, such as completing an assignment independently, communicating a need, or participating in a group activity, were huge victories. The students I worked with in middle school inspired me because of their determination and individuality. They each learned differently, communicated differently, and had unique strengths, but they all deserved the same opportunities to succeed. I found myself looking forward to that class every day because I enjoyed building relationships with the students and finding ways to help them feel included. That experience pushed me toward special education because I realized I wanted a career where I could make that kind of impact every day. As I continued through school and into college, my passion for special education only grew stronger. What began as an interest in middle school developed into a clear sense of purpose as I gained more experience working with students in different classroom settings. My coursework gave me the foundation to understand the academic, behavioral, emotional, and communication needs that students may have, but my hands-on classroom experiences are what truly confirmed that this was the career path meant for me. Through observations, field placements, and working directly with students, I learned that no two children learn the same way. I saw how important individualized instruction is in helping students succeed and how meaningful it can be when teachers adapt lessons and strategies to fit each student’s strengths and needs. I also learned that progress does not always happen in large, obvious ways. Sometimes growth looks like a student gaining confidence to participate in class, communicating a need independently, or successfully managing a difficult situation. Those moments taught me the importance of patience, flexibility, and celebrating every achievement, no matter how small it may seem to others. Next year, I plan to continue into the classroom as a first-year teacher in a K–2 self-contained special education classroom. I am especially excited to work with younger students because early childhood is such an important stage for learning and development. At that age, teachers have the opportunity to help students build foundational academic, communication, behavioral, and social skills that will support them throughout their education. I want to create a classroom where students feel safe, encouraged, and proud of their progress. After completing my Master's, I hope to continue growing as an educator by learning new teaching strategies, collaborating with families and support staff, and always advocating for my students’ needs. My goal is to help students develop confidence in themselves and reach their full potential. I know special education can be challenging, but I also know it is incredibly rewarding. The experience I had in middle school showed me the difference a supportive environment can make in a student’s life, and that is the kind of difference I hope to make throughout my own career in special education.
