My experience with mental health has been deeply shaped by the intense pressures and stresses I faced during my time in school. I felt immense pressure from a young age to excel academically, maintain a heavy extracurricular schedule, and prepare for a successful future. While I was driven to achieve, the constant demands on my time and energy began to take a significant toll on my mental well-being. In high school especially, the workload, social dynamics, and uncertainty about the future combined to create debilitating anxiety and depression. There were many days when I felt completely overwhelmed, struggling to keep up with assignments, participate in class, and engage with my peers. The vicious cycle of poor mental health impacting my academic performance, which then further exacerbated my anxiety, was truly exhausting. During this challenging period, I learned some invaluable lessons. First and foremost, I came to deeply understand the importance of self-care and setting boundaries. I realized that in order to show up fully for my responsibilities, I had to prioritize my own physical and emotional needs, whether that was getting enough sleep, taking breaks from studying, or seeking professional support. This was a radical shift from my previous mindset of constant productivity and being perfect. My mental health struggles also shaped my relationships in profound ways. I became much more empathetic and emotionally attuned to the experiences of others, especially those also navigating mental health challenges. Some friendships, unfortunately, fell away as I had to limit my social circle to focus on my own wellbeing. But the relationships that did endure became much deeper and more authentic, built on a foundation of vulnerability, understanding, and mutual care. Lastly, my experiences have heavily influenced my career aspirations. Initially, I had planned to pursue a highly competitive, fast-paced path. However, after facing burnout in high school, I've become drawn to professions that prioritize work-life balance, emphasize holistic well-being, and provide opportunities to support others in navigating mental health concerns. I'm particularly interested in the fields of computer science, social work, and nonprofit advocacy - areas where I can leverage my personal experiences to make a meaningful difference. While the mental health challenges I faced in school were incredibly difficult, I'm grateful for the profound lessons they've taught me. I'm committed to continuing to prioritize self-care, nurture empathetic relationships, and channel my passions into a career that allows me to give back. My hope is to be a beacon of hope and support for others who may be struggling, just as I once was.
Sean Carroll's Mindscape Big Picture Scholarship
The relentless quest to unravel the mysteries of our universe has been a fundamental driver of human curiosity and scientific inquiry since the dawn of civilization. From the earliest stargazers to the modern-day astrophysicists and cosmologists, the desire to understand the fundamental nature of our cosmos has fueled groundbreaking discoveries and pushed the boundaries of human knowledge. As we stand on the precipice of a new era of scientific exploration, I firmly believe that it is essential we continue to deepen our understanding of the universe we inhabit.
At the heart of this drive to comprehend the cosmos lies a profound fascination with the origins, structure, and evolution of the universe. Questions such as "How did the universe begin?" "What is it made of?" and "Where is it headed?" have captivated the human imagination for millennia, spurring the development of increasingly sophisticated theories and models. From the Big Bang theory to the concept of dark matter and dark energy, our understanding of the universe has undergone a remarkable transformation, with each new insight shedding light on the intricate tapestry of the cosmos.
However, the knowledge we have acquired thus far represents only a fraction of the total picture. Vast swaths of the universe remain shrouded in mystery, and the more we learn, the more we realize how little we truly understand. It is this very realization – that there is still so much to discover – that fuels my passion for exploring the nature of our universe.
By delving deeper into the fundamental laws and principles that govern the cosmos, I hope to contribute to the ongoing quest to unravel the secrets of our universe. Through the pursuit of cutting-edge research and the application of innovative analytical tools, I aim to push the boundaries of our scientific understanding and potentially uncover new paradigm-shifting insights.
One of the key areas I hope to explore is the nature of dark matter and dark energy – the enigmatic components that make up the vast majority of the observable universe. By investigating the potential properties and interactions of dark matter and dark energy, I believe we can gain a more comprehensive understanding of the underlying structure and dynamics of the universe, potentially leading to groundbreaking discoveries.
Another area of particular interest to me is the study of exoplanets and the search for extraterrestrial life. As we continue to identify and characterize planets orbiting distant stars, the possibility of discovering habitable worlds – and potentially even evidence of alien life – becomes increasingly tantalizing. By employing cutting-edge observational techniques and sophisticated computational models, I hope to contribute to the ongoing efforts to shed light on the prevalence and diversity of life in the cosmos.
In addition to these specific avenues of research, I am also deeply intrigued by the broader philosophical and existential implications of our understanding of the universe. As we uncover more about the origins, evolution, and ultimate fate of the cosmos, we are forced to confront profound questions about our place in the grand scheme of things. How does the knowledge we acquire about the universe shape our understanding of our own existence? What are the ethical and societal implications of our discoveries? These are the types of questions I hope to explore, using a multidisciplinary approach that combines scientific inquiry with philosophical and ethical reflection.
Ultimately, I believe that our continued efforts to better understand the nature of the universe have the potential to yield transformative insights that could profoundly impact our world and our lives. By expanding the boundaries of human knowledge, we not only satisfy our innate curiosity but also unlock new possibilities for technological and societal advancements. From the development of more advanced space exploration capabilities to the potential for breakthroughs in energy production and conservation, the knowledge we gain about the universe can have far-reaching practical applications.
Moreover, the act of exploring the cosmos has the power to inspire and captivate people of all backgrounds, fostering a sense of wonder and unity that transcends cultural and political boundaries. By communicating our scientific discoveries and the profound questions they raise, we can cultivate a deeper appreciation for the grandeur and complexity of the universe, and inspire future generations to continue the quest for knowledge and understanding.
In conclusion, the drive to better understand the nature of our universe is not merely an academic exercise, but a fundamental part of the human experience. By embracing this challenge, we not only expand the frontiers of scientific knowledge but also deepen our understanding of ourselves and our place in the cosmos. It is with this conviction that I am committed to contributing to the ongoing exploration of the universe, using innovative ideas and concepts to uncover the secrets that lie beyond our horizon.
Black Leaders Scholarship
In honor of Black History Month, I am honored to reflect on a Black leader who has profoundly inspired me – the late Congressman John Lewis. As a transformative civil rights activist and political pioneer, Congressman Lewis dedicated his life to the pursuit of justice, equality, and the betterment of all people.
Growing up, I was captivated by Congressman Lewis' unwavering commitment to nonviolent social change and his willingness to put his own safety on the line for the cause of racial equality. His participation in the 1965 Selma to Montgomery marches, where he sustained a skull fracture from a brutal police attack, exemplified his courage and moral fortitude in the face of adversity. The iconic photograph of Congressman Lewis, bloodied but steadfast, has become a powerful symbol of the sacrifices made by the civil rights movement.
What struck me most about Congressman Lewis' legacy was his ability to inspire and empower others, even in the darkest of times. Despite facing seemingly insurmountable obstacles, he never wavered in his belief that progress and transformation were possible through peaceful, principled action. His words, "When you see something that is not right, not fair, not just, you have a moral obligation to do something about it," have become a guiding light for me and countless others who seek to make a positive difference in the world.
Congressman Lewis' influence extended far beyond the civil rights movement of the 1960s. As a long-serving member of the U.S. House of Representatives, he continued to be a tireless advocate for the disenfranchised, fighting for voting rights, healthcare reform, and economic justice. He was a staunch defender of democracy, human rights, and the power of young people to drive societal change.
What I admire most about Congressman Lewis, however, was his unwavering commitment to nonviolence, even in the face of the most brutal oppression. His ability to meet hatred with love, to confront injustice with unwavering moral conviction, and to inspire others to follow in his footsteps is truly remarkable. In an era of increasing polarization and divisiveness, Congressman Lewis' life and legacy serve as a powerful reminder that progress can be achieved through peaceful, principled action.
As I reflect on Congressman Lewis' impact, I am inspired to emulate his example and to carry forward the torch of social justice and civil rights. I aspire to be a civic-minded leader who is willing to stand up for what is right, even in the face of adversity. Like Congressman Lewis, I hope to use my voice and my actions to uplift and empower marginalized communities, to bridge the divides that too often separate us, and to contribute to the ongoing struggle for a more equitable and inclusive society.
In honoring Congressman John Lewis, we celebrate the life and legacy of a true American hero – a man who dedicated his entire life to the betterment of his fellow citizens and the realization of the promise of democracy. His unwavering courage, moral clarity, and transformative impact will continue to inspire generations to come, and I am humbled to count myself among those who have been touched by his profound example.
Grandmaster Nam K Hyong Scholarship
As a first-generation college student, I have had to overcome significant obstacles to reach this point in my educational journey. Growing up in a low-income household, resources were limited, and the path to higher education was not always clear. Simon Strong Scholarship
As a recent high school graduate, I've already had my fair share of challenges and adversity. One particular experience that stands out was when I faced academic difficulties during my junior year. I had always been a strong student, but that year I struggled to keep up with the workload and rigorous course material. It was a humbling and stressful time.
Initially, I felt overwhelmed and disappointed in myself. I had always prided myself on my academic performance, and suddenly I was falling behind. I started to doubt my abilities and question whether I was cut out for the demands of higher-level coursework.
However, I knew I couldn't let this setback define me. I took a step back, evaluated the situation, and developed a plan to turn things around. First, I reached out to my teachers for extra help and guidance. They were supportive and provided valuable insights on how I could improve my study habits and time management skills.
I also turned to my peers for support. I formed study groups with classmates, which not only helped me better understand the material, but also provided a sense of community and accountability. Surrounding myself with others who were facing similar challenges made me feel less alone.
Gradually, through hard work, dedication, and the support of my teachers and peers, I was able to bring my grades back up. It wasn't an easy process, but the adversity I faced during that time taught me some invaluable lessons.
I learned the importance of resilience and perseverance. Facing academic struggles showed me that setbacks are inevitable, but with the right mindset and approach, they can be overcome. I also gained a deeper understanding of the value of seeking help and not being afraid to ask for support when you need it.
This experience has shaped me into a more well-rounded and adaptable individual. I now know that I have the inner strength to confront challenges head-on and emerge stronger. If I were to offer advice to someone facing similar circumstances, I would say: Don't be too hard on yourself. Recognize that setbacks are a normal part of the learning process, and they don't define your worth or capabilities. Develop a plan of action and take concrete steps to address the issue. Whether it's reaching out to teachers, forming study groups, or adjusting your study habits, be proactive in finding solutions. Surround yourself with a support system. Your peers, teachers, and loved ones can provide invaluable encouragement and guidance during difficult times. Believe in your ability to overcome the challenge. Remind yourself of your past successes and your inner strength, and don't give up, even when the going gets tough. Adversity can be daunting, but it also presents an opportunity for growth and self-discovery. By facing challenges head-on and learning from them, we can emerge as more resilient, adaptable, and empowered individuals.
Gloria Millender "I am 3rd" - J. O. Y. Scholarship
One particular experience that stands out was when I went on a mission trip to a remote village in South America.
Prior to the trip, I spent time in prayer, asking God to use me and work through me to serve the people we would be meeting. I knew that the trip would be physically and emotionally demanding, but I felt a strong calling to go and put the needs of others before my own.
When we arrived at the village, I was struck by the poverty and difficult living conditions the people faced. Many lacked access to clean water, adequate food, and basic medical care. Rather than focusing on my own comfort or complaining about the challenging circumstances, I tried to have a servant's heart and find ways to meet the needs I saw around me.
Whether it was helping to build a new well, playing with the children, or praying with the elderly, I constantly asked myself how I could put the community's wellbeing before my own. There were many long, tiring days, but I found that the more I invested in serving others, the more joy and fulfillment I experienced.
Seeing the difference we were able to make in the lives of these villagers was profoundly impacting. It reminded me that when we take our eyes off ourselves and instead focus on glorifying God and loving our neighbors, we unlock a deeper purpose and meaning in our lives.
Moving forward, I am committed to continuing to apply these principles. In my daily life, I want to constantly be looking for opportunities to put the needs of others first - whether that's through volunteer work, acts of service to my community, or simply being available to lend a listening ear to a friend in need. By keeping Jesus as the top priority and striving to love others as He does, I know I will continue to grow and be transformed in ways that have eternal significance.

Driving under the influence (DUI) refers to the act of operating a motor vehicle while impaired by alcohol or drugs. The effects of DUIs can be severe, including accidents, injuries, and even fatalities. Strategies to prevent DUIs include implementing stricter laws and penalties, increasing public awareness through educational campaigns, promoting designated drivers, providing alternative transportation options, and utilizing ignition interlock devices. Another tactic that could be used would be for cars to have a breathalyzer test before you start driving. If the blood alcohol concentration
is above the legal amount, then the car will not start.
Bald Eagle Scholarship
My mom has been the most influential person in my life because she gave me structure and discipline. This structure and discipline helped me to make new good habits and stop the bad ones. She always kept me busy during the summers enrolling me in different camps with things like coding, programming, and a camp to expose me to the different trades that exist. All of these things helped me to become more interested and knowledgeable about potential job opportunities. Whenever I would do something really bad or was disobedient at a point, then she would make me do 50 pushups. While this helped me become stronger, it also instilled in me that my actions have consequences.
During high school, I had stretches where my grades were lower than what my mom expected from me. When she saw my report card with average/below-average grades, she was very disappointed in me. She told me about how she takes me to school every single day, because bussing is not available to my school every day, to a far school just for me to perform like that. This started to make me reconsider the priorities that I was putting on school. Also, when I got home and got onto the computer, I could not sit at the back corner of the table anymore. So I had to sit in front of the table for people to keep an eye on what I was doing and to keep me from becoming distracted. Immediately following this, I started to become more focused on my homework and studying for the next day. In the grading period following this time, my grades have shown a tremendous improvement from what it was before. On top of taking three of her children to and from school every day, she needed to make dinner so that all seven people that lived in our house had something to
eat. Seeing her make dinner and commuting to and from school every day helped me realized that I only have one job and she has to do so many things to make sure that the house is taken care of and that all of her children are doing what they are supposed to be doing. She has taught me to be responsible and accountable for all of my actions since I am a year away from becoming a man. I would like to show extreme gratitude to her for everything that she has done to me.
