My name is Marawan Abbas, and I am currently a second-year medical student at Albany Medical College. As the author Joshua J. Marine once stated, “Challenges are what makes life interesting and overcoming them is what makes life meaningful.” I was born and raised in Egypt, and I came to America eight years ago. I believe that the enjoyment of life is small in most of the things you do, except when you help others in need and draw that smile on their faces. If you ask me about my aspirations right now, I will say that I would love to see everybody on earth happy, but the question is how can we achieve that? I believe that life is not structured in a way for everyone to be happy and have no struggles because without struggles there is no success. Sometimes, when you look at your life and see other people’s struggles, it reminds you of how blessed you are. For me, my plan is to become a doctor specializing in internal medicine and travel the world and go to countries that are considered underserved for medicine such as the rural populations, and open multiple private practices in many countries to help people for free or with low wages. The person that confirmed my goal and inspired me, even more, is Dr. Mohamed Mashally (1944 – 28 July 2020), or the "doctor of poor people", who was an Egyptian doctor known for treating poor patients at a very low cost. He chooses to dedicate his life and to help those who can’t buy their medication or even make an appointment to be seen. He offered his appointment at a very low wage, and he is truly the hero that I am aspiring to be.
