I come from one of the most remote parts of Uganda, which is located in Northern Uganda in Gulu district which was greatly affected by the LRA (Lord’s Resistance Army) war in the early 2000’s. Due to this war, over 400,000 people were displaced and schools were destroyed leaving many of my people uneducated. My family, most especially my parents were forced to flee from our home to seek refuge in the nearby cities that were unaffected by the war. Through odd jobs, they raised my siblings and me allowing us to attain a desirable level of education in Uganda. My community has been facing the wrath of global warming. This has affected not only the environment but also the livelihood and health of Ugandans. Climate change has brought about prolonged droughts and continuous rising temperatures in my village hence frequent food shortage, low clean water levels, and lung diseases due to the rising dust in the air thus many people have died. I have used the opportunities my parents gave me throughout my education to positively learn from it and not be held back by the past and this has been my main source of inspiration. These injustices truly saddened me but drove me to continue studying to create a healthy and safe environment for my people to live better lives. This prompted me to pursue a course in Environmental and Sustainability Studies in America because of all the programs and opportunities it offers. I want to work hand in hand with nature, do my part to slow down the calamities brought about by climate change, and restore our planet to its natural ecological balance. I was prompted to join clubs in high school that would support the community around me as well as encourage change and the use of alternative environmentally friendly methods used in farming like the use of organic pesticides, as well as, clean and the health of the people. As well as, raise money for children in Uganda with cancer coming from polluted areas to be able to afford necessities such as food, and clothes and also fund their treatment. I refer and pick inspiration from Beatrice Atim Anywar from Kitgum district. She is the State Minister for the environment who has used her voice and platform to sensitize the public about the importance of the environment. Through this, she has saved the Mabira forest from being converted into a sugar cane plantation through the “Save Mabira Crusade” demonstrations. Having faced many hardships along the way for example being imprisoned for “terrorism”, she never lost sight of her love for the environment. This has driven me to know that though I may face hardships, I should not be discouraged and continue fighting for a better environment. After getting my Environmental and Sustainability Studies degree, I plan to encourage pollutant-free and sustainable methods of usage and conservation of renewable resources in Uganda and other countries and communities struggling with climate change. I want to provide access to electricity through biowaste, solar energy, and other resources. I am committed to dedicating my energy to community outreach to understand the issues they are currently facing and develop new solutions that work with the community's way of life and available resources. With new opportunities, I will inspire the people from my home area and those displaced that there is hope for a brighter future among the upcoming generations. I will share the knowledge I acquire to create a safe environment in Uganda and across the globe.
