Manuel Abanto

Bio

Hello! My name is Manuel Abanto, I'm currently a senior, and I was born in Lima, Peru, on June 15, 2005. I was born to a low-income family. I moved to the USA, around when I was around 11 years old. Having battled with language barriers, bullying, low self-esteem, social anxiety, procrastination, and depression; I can successfully say that I won the battle! I dream of someday being a computer programmer, so I can give my parents a good retirement, also make friends (I don't have any.), and currently learning to play Dungeons and Dragons (I joined a school club for the first time!), and planning on helping my community for the Halloween festival (My former fear of crowds is no more!). I'm trying to become the best person I can become, to make my parents proud of me, and to spite the people who called me "Weirdo" and bullied me for my entire school life, just because I was quiet (I couldn't speak English) and liked reading. I will continue living. I will continue to be happy. I will take back control of my own life. For life has its ups and downs, and I will now welcome them with open arms. If you are seeing this thank you for reading, I hope you have a wonderful day.

As an only child, I have always struggled with social anxiety. Growing up, I was constantly discriminated against based on my appearance, which made me feel like an outcast. People would stare at me in public, make fun of me, and even refuse to talk to me. I would often wonder what did I do wrong for them to single me out every day. This led to a deep-seated fear of social interaction, which has made it difficult for me to make friends and participate in social activities. My struggles with social anxiety have had a profound impact on my education. In high school, I found it hard to speak up in class, participate in group projects, and make friends. I often skipped school to avoid facing my classmates, which led to a decline in my academic performance. My grades suffered, and I began to feel hopeless about my future. Eventually, I sought help for my mental health issues and began to attend therapy sessions. Through therapy, I learned coping mechanisms to manage my social anxiety and build my self-esteem. I also started to explore my passion for Computer Science, which helped me express myself and gain confidence in my abilities. Despite these positive changes, I still face challenges in my education due to my mental health issues. I struggle to network and build professional relationships, which is essential in all industries. I also have difficulty presenting my work and showcasing my talents, which is a critical part of succeeding in this field. Despite these obstacles, I am determined to succeed in my career and overcome my social anxiety. I am committed to continuing my therapy sessions, building my self-confidence, and pushing myself out of my comfort zone. I believe that with hard work and dedication, I can achieve my goals and build a successful career in the programming industry. The reasoning behind the death of my maternal grandmother, one of the few people in the world who didn't look at me like I was something to laugh at, who is now gone, all thanks to the actions of those who did laugh at me, so I decided to work harder than I ever did before so I can become successful, and get a stable job so my loved ones will always have something. In conclusion, my struggles with social anxiety have had a significant impact on my education and career goals. However, I am determined to overcome these challenges and succeed in my chosen field. I am grateful for the opportunity to apply for this scholarship and hope that my story will inspire others who are struggling with mental health issues to seek help and pursue their dreams. Thank you for your consideration.

As an only child, I have always felt a sense of responsibility to make my parents proud and be a positive influence in the world. I believe that influence means using your words and actions to inspire others to make positive changes in their lives and the world around them. To influence others, I strive to lead by example and be a good role model. I try to be kind, respectful, and compassionate to those around me, and I am always willing to lend a helping hand. One of the most challenging experiences I have faced was when my paternal grandfather was diagnosed with cancer. It was difficult to see him struggle with his illness, but I knew I had to be strong for him and my family. I spent a lot of time with him, reading to him and talking to him about his life. I wanted to make sure that he knew how much he meant to me and how much I loved him. Although he passed away, I am grateful for the time I had with him and the memories we shared. I am currently a high school senior planning to pursue a degree in computer science. I have always been fascinated by technology and its ability to connect people from all over the world. I believe that computer science can be used to solve some of the world's most pressing problems, from climate change to healthcare. My goal is to use my skills and knowledge to make a positive impact on society, whether it's by developing innovative software or creating new technologies. Receiving this scholarship would mean the world to me. It would provide me with the financial support I need to pursue my dreams and make a positive impact in the world. It would also serve as a reminder that hard work and dedication can pay off, and that I have the potential to achieve great things. I am grateful for this opportunity to honor Jack's memory and to continue his legacy of making a positive impact in the world, well at least making it a better place for my loved ones. In conclusion, I believe that influence means using your words and actions to inspire others to make positive changes in their lives and the world around them. I have overcome adversity by being strong for my family during my grandfather's illness, and I am passionate about pursuing a degree in computer science to make a better the life of my loved ones while I still have them. Receiving this scholarship would be a tremendous honor and would allow me to continue Jack's legacy of making the world a better place.
      Minority Students x Stem Scholarship
As a first-generation college student of color pursuing a degree in computer science, my passion for technology stems from my childhood. Growing up, my family could not afford the latest gadgets and devices, because they didn't exist back in my home country Peru. As a result, I became fascinated with understanding how these technologies worked when I came to the United States of America and what made them so essential to our everyday lives. One of the apps that have influenced me to dive deeper into the tech space is "Zoom". As the pandemic hit, Zoom became an essential tool for people to stay connected and work from home. As I started attending virtual classes and meetings, I became interested in understanding how the technology behind video conferencing works. I wanted to know how data is transmitted, how real-time communication is achieved, and how Zoom became such a popular platform. To change the tech industry, I believe we need to focus on increasing diversity and representation at all levels of the industry. We need more role models and mentors for underrepresented students. Companies need to make a conscious effort to increase diversity in their hiring and promotion practices. I also think that education is a critical component of increasing diversity in the tech industry. Schools and universities should prioritize computer science education and provide resources and opportunities for students of all backgrounds. In addition, the tech industry needs to address ethical concerns related to technology. As technology becomes more integrated into our lives, issues such as data privacy, cybersecurity, and algorithmic bias are becoming more prevalent. Companies need to prioritize the ethical implications of their technology and ensure that they are not perpetuating social inequalities. I strongly believe that the tech industry has a social and moral obligation to be inclusive to all consumers. Technology is becoming increasingly ubiquitous in our lives, and everyone should have equal access to its benefits. The tech industry has a unique opportunity to create positive change in the world, but this cannot happen if certain groups are left behind. In conclusion, I believe that the tech industry has the power to make a positive impact on the world. However, to achieve this, we need to prioritize diversity, education, and ethics. As a first-generation student of color, I am committed to making a difference in the tech industry and ensuring that everyone has equal access to its benefits.

As a student who is passionate about computer science, I have always been drawn to the power of technology to change the world. I have always loved exploring the limits of what is possible with programming, and I am constantly seeking out new challenges and opportunities to push myself further. However, what sets me apart from my peers is my unique approach to my problems, I always try to find the fastest way to solve a problem more efficiently. From a young age, I have always been fascinated by the way that things work. Whether it was taking apart broken appliances to see how they functioned, or devising creative solutions to complex puzzles, I have always been driven to understand the inner workings of the world around me. This curiosity has led me to pursue computer science, as it provides endless opportunities for exploration and innovation, even though I was poor in my early life, I still tried to figure out a way out of poverty. In my pursuit of computer science, I have faced many challenges. Whether it was learning a new programming language or debugging a particularly tricky piece of code, I have always persevered and pushed through adversity. This drive and ambition have led me to pursue a career in software engineering, where I hope to use my skills and expertise to make a meaningful impact on the world. Beyond my academic pursuits, I am also deeply committed to giving back to my community. I believe that it is important to use one's skills and talents to make a positive difference in the world, and I have always sought out opportunities to do so. In the future, I plan to continue using my skills and talents to give back to my community, and by that, I mean the people from my birth country Peru. I hope to work with nonprofit organizations to develop software that can help improve the lives of people around the world. Whether it is developing apps that make it easier for people to access healthcare or creating tools that can help address climate change, I am committed to using my expertise to make the world a better place, at least my part of the world if I can at least. In conclusion, I am a unique and ambitious student who is passionate about computer science and dedicated to giving back to my community. I believe that my combination of drive, ambition, and creativity make me an ideal candidate for this scholarship, and I am excited at the opportunity to continue pursuing my passions and making a positive difference in the world, not for myself but for my loved ones.
      Richard Neumann Scholarship
As a high school senior, I have always been drawn to finding innovative solutions to problems, whether it be in my personal life or within the community. Recently, I had the opportunity to use my creativity to create a solution for a problem that was affecting my grandmother. My grandmother suffers from arthritis, which causes her hands to be constantly sore and inflamed. She often struggled to open jars, bottles, and even doors, which made it difficult for her to live independently. I decided to create a device that would help her open jars and bottles with ease. After researching and experimenting with various designs, I came up with a simple yet effective solution. I created a small tool with a rubber grip that could be attached to the lid of any jar or bottle. The rubber grip allowed my grandmother to easily open the container without any pain or discomfort in her hands. Seeing the positive impact this invention had on my grandmother’s daily life inspired me to think about other problems that could be solved through innovation. One issue that has been weighing heavily on my mind is the current state of our planet and the environmental challenges we face. If I had the necessary resources, I would love to create a device that converts plastic waste into usable energy. Plastic waste is a major contributor to pollution, and finding a way to repurpose it could have a significant impact on the environment. The device I envision would be able to take in plastic waste, break it down into its chemical components, and then use those components to produce energy. To create such a device, I would need a team of engineers and scientists who specialize in chemical engineering and renewable energy. I would also need a laboratory equipped with the necessary tools and equipment to conduct the necessary experiments and tests. The first step would be to conduct extensive research on the most effective way to break down plastic waste into usable components. Once we have a solid understanding of the chemical makeup of plastic waste, we would then work on developing a prototype of the device. The prototype would then go through rigorous testing to ensure its safety and efficiency. Once the device has been successfully tested, we would work on scaling up production so that it could be used on a larger scale. In order to fund this project, I would need to secure investors who are passionate about environmental sustainability and are willing to invest in innovative solutions to environmental problems. Overall, I believe that my passion for creativity and problem-solving make me an ideal candidate for this scholarship. I am committed to finding solutions to the challenges we face, both on a personal level and on a larger scale. With the necessary resources, I am confident that I can create a device that will have a positive impact on the environment and the world as a whole.

Greetings, my name is Manuel Abanto born in Lima, Peru, on June 15, 2005. I was born to a low-income family. My early life had two motivators: My mother, who always woke up at 5 am, went to a job that paid her misery of a salary just so I could eat a meal, and my peers taunted me every day with things I couldn't have, for we weren't born equal. These were the motivators for my dreams back in Peru, to graduate at the top of my class, figure out which job pays the highest, get a degree in that, buy a house in a good area, and get my family the life I felt they deserved, not the one they got. "It was frustrating! It was unfair!" "Why does my mother have to be paid so little for so much effort?" These thoughts plagued my mind as I dreamt of a better life. Then everything changed when I moved to the US. "The bird trapped in a golden cage" would be a fitting description of most of my life in the United States. It was extraordinary at first, like stepping into another world, with cars, airplanes, people in fancy clothes, and so many colors contrasting with the gray of the concrete. I was in a honeymoon phase, and I thought this was the best thing to happen to me, but everything changed when I enlisted in school, and my hell for years began. Language barriers, I soon found out, limited my opportunities for everything, for I could only read and speak Spanish, I could not make friends, and take advantage of everything this country had to offer. Due to not being able to communicate with my peers, my social skills became nonexistent over the years, and thus without a way to communicate, I formed no meaningful connections, whispers of "Weirdo." "The Quiet Kid." haunted my ears over the years, people thinking I couldn't understand them, but I could, and it hurt. My dream switched to "I just want to be normal." "I want to have friends." and "I want to have a fun conversation with someone." Sadly my mental health deteriorated over the years, and I didn't want to burden my parents with my problems as they had to work, my way of coping became an extremely unhealthy one, and it cost me a lot to maintain my body and mind preoccupied so I wouldn't think these negative thoughts, after all, you can't think negative thoughts if your mind is too tired to think. My lowest point was freshman year, my bunny "Esponjosa" died, who accompanied me since I arrived here, and one of my pillars of support was gone. I didn't care anymore, the tests, school, the future, and my life, all became meaningless, and everything tasted like cardboard once again. Then my life changed once again when the pandemic started. So much has occurred since then. Inside my house, I was allowed to recuperate my mental health. My grades returned to "A's" and "B's". The pandemic was over, and returning to school was like a gut punch, but "Hey, life has its ups and downs." I was fortunate to get good teachers last year, who helped me find the majority of hobbies and interests I have to this day. The steps after this would be trying to get scholarships to go to college, pursue Computer Engineering, and show my parents that they don't need to worry about anything after all, and that their son is a productive member of society, just like they always wanted.
