Jeannine Schroeder Women in Public Service Memorial Scholarship
In the process of applying for this Scholarship, I was asked to share useful information about myself. I was stumped at first, but I pulled some interesting things about my most recent life together. My name is Amanda MacKenzie. I have adopted the nickname, Mandy. I was born and raised in Peabody, Massachusetts. I graduated high school at Peabody Veterans Memorial High in 2019. The most important things you should know about me are based on my school, work, and volunteer experiences. I started my journey at North Shore last fall. I finished up my major in Early Child Education. I am also a former Women In Transition student at North Shore Community College. This semester I am currently a full-time student at Gordon College with past work experience, and current volunteer experience. I finished a two year degree in three years as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. My plan is to finish my bachelor’s degree at Gordon College with a Major in Early Christian Ministries and a minor in Education. Before I started school I had two work experiences related to my major. One was at Harborlight Montresor in Beverly. There I had a few tasks in the classroom. My first task was being in charge of the swings on the playground. Swings were not the only task I had on the playground. The other two tasks outside were, keeping the children safe and engaging with them when appropriate. Another task I Had was just to make sure the children were quiet when they needed to be. I helped with small classroom management. The other was at KinderCare in Peabody. There I had many similar tasks and some different ones. One task was I helped watch the children when we went outside. Another task was I often organized crayons and other art supplies during activities. A final task was that I came up with four art projects towards the end of my time there. I have had a third paid position during the summer of 2021 at Saint Paul Early Education. My tasks were to be a full fledged part time assistant teacher. I had to learn all the aspects of an assistant teacher. I currently have no paid position. However, I do have a volunteer position. There is one volunteer job that I have done in the ECE field during my college experience. This is a job I currently do for no pay. I volunteer to teach Sunday School and I am training to be a Children’s Minister at my church every week. For Sunday school, I have to do two things. One is to plan the curriculum and teach the lesson. The second one is to make sure the children are safe through classroom management. My jobs as a Children’s Minister include the Sunday School tasks and assistance for the after-school and youth group programs. I may not be getting paid for this, but this position is a great position for me personally and my future. In conclusion, when applying for the honors program I did not know what I was going to share. I knew that my educational status was important. However, I was almost completely stumped on what else to share. In the end, I realized that my major would help me share some good information. I realized that I may be a part-time student with no paid job and finishing this up during a pandemic, but I do have some past and current experiences that are directly related to my major. I hope my shared information will provide a good image of me.
