My experience with Racism when I immigrated to the U.S from Nigeria and the fact that I found myself having to work harder to achieve my goals, have taught me resilience. Resilience has given me the ability to keep fighting, and never stopping to work on my dreams. If a particular method or approach I use in my studies does not work, there are other approaches that I will use. There are times I would hit an obstacle and life will throw challenges at me but having that resilience will help me succeed in my studies and take me to where I want to be in life.
I have a passion for criminal justice reform, which is why I am currently pursuing a double major in criminal justice and Psychology in my bachelor’s degree program. Upon completion, I will go in for a master’s degree and a Ph.D. in Forensic Psychology. Thereafter, I intend to eventually work as a Forensic Psychologist at the federal level advocating for fair justice for the Black race. My goal is to help law enforcement agencies identify the most elusive suspects in an investigation. I should be able to work on old unsolved (cold) cases involving Black people using the existing details of the crime and other evidence to find the perpetrator. Contributing to the reduced rate of racial profiling is my dream. Also, I want to use the skills and education to contribute to the change I want in my native countries, Nigeria, and Cameroon, which are in dire need of criminal justice and government reform.
Lastly, I would contribute to people's success stories by starting charity foundations to sponsor students' education.

Impact Scholarship for Black Students
My name is Malika. I am a current African sophomore. I have a passion for Criminal Justice, which is why I am currently pursuing a double major in Criminal Justice and Psychology in my bachelor’s degree program at the University of North Dakota. Upon completion, I will go in for a master’s degree in Forensic Psychology. Thereafter, I intend to study for a Ph.D. and eventually work as a Forensic Psychologist at the federal level advocating for fair justice for the Black race.
My future goal is to help law enforcement agencies identify the most elusive suspects in an investigation. I should be able to work on old unsolved (cold) cases involving Black people using the existing details of the crime and other evidence to determine a behavior pattern. I want to advocate for fair trials and treatment of the Black race at the federal level. Also, I want to use the skills and education gotten to contribute to the change I want to see (law and government reforms) in the countries I come from, Nigeria and Cameroon. The countries are currently exploited by greedy, illiterate, incompassionate, and incompetent leaders in the government.
Additionally, I have a big goal of owning charity foundations in the future where I would provide capital to people to start-up businesses and fend for their family, and issue scholarships to students to sponsor their college education. I want to be a part of people’s success stories and give hope to the hopeless. A volunteer experience inspired this goal of mine.
I am currently preparing myself to achieve these goals by working hard in my studies and getting involved in extracurricular activities that give me skills and foster personal growth. For example, I interned with the National Society of Leadership and Success (NSLS) and started a chapter of the NSLS on my campus as the student president. I had to recruit four executive board members that I currently lead, conduct interviews, and organize meetings. These actions have improved my communication, organization, and management skills which will help me in my future career in law enforcement, and to manage my charity foundations.
Also, I am currently a Resident Assistant on campus. I applied for the job to gain experience and refine my communication, leadership, writing, and time-management skills. I meet with residents regularly to ensure their well-being, organize events to create community connections, and notify residents of crucial information through emails. This job has taught me teamwork, accountability, patience, and creativity. These are all traits that will help me in future endeavors.
Furthermore, I am continuously searching and applying for internships that involve Public Policy so I can gain the professional experience and skills needed for me to succeed in government workplaces. Besides, I want to use the opportunity to build a professional resume, network with other leaders, and build relationships that will help me succeed in the future.
In conclusion, everything I currently do as a college student is to improve myself academically, and personally due to my ambition and drive to succeed at my goal of making a better world. I have been able to identify my career goals and turn ambitions into action. I am working hard to hone my leadership skills to excel in my future and make a change in the world. I will like to focus on working on my goals and not worry about school finances.

Support Small Businesses Scholarship
In May 2020, I started my business called AdornedwithBeads, where I sell handmade African waist chains (wait beads), thigh chains, and anklets. I got inspired to start the business after I noticed the impact of wearing body jewelry on myself. I used to hate my body so much that looking at my naked self in the mirror was never an option. When I started adorning my waist with colorful African waist beads, they made me admire myself more. I loved the way I felt when I had them on and started to feel more confident. I was also able to notice my body changes (weight gain and loss) with the help of those waist beads.
I am a huge advocate and supporter of body positivity and self-confidence. Unfortunately, society has painted a ridiculous and unrealistic image of how women are supposed to look. There are now statements like "summer body" and "beach body ready" which suggest a specific body type. These statements have made a lot of women feel less confident about wearing bikinis and revealing their "unconventional" body. Unfortunately, we are living in a world where a specific body type or waist size has been portrayed as sexy or "perfect" or seen as "body goals". Thus, I started this business to let women know that you do not have to have a small waist size, have big hips, or weigh a certain weight to be viewed as sexy. I want my business to achieve a change of mind state (from negative to positive) in women and let them know that they are sexy just the way they are. As of now, I have made 400+ sales and have shipped packages to Canada, the U.K, and over 30 states in the U.S.
I am aware that my business has nothing to do with my majors; it is a side hustle fueled by passion. I created a website (adornedwithbeads.com) where ladies can easily shop and leave reviews. The waist beads are available in a variety of colors and sizes, made to cater to women of all shapes, sizes, and ethnicities. My goal is to instill confidence in women all around the world and celebrate our femininity, one bead at a time.
Low-Income Student Scholarship
My greatest achievement is finishing my freshman year of college with a 4.0 GPA during the semester of Spring 2020. I had a goal of improving my GPA since I had a 3.9 during my first semester of Freshman year (Fall 2019). I worked hard and learned proper time-management skills. I am double majoring in Criminal Justice and Psychology but during my Freshman year, I stepped out of my comfort zone by getting involved in extracurricular activities on my campus. I was the vice-president of my residence hall government, got an internship with the National Society of Leadership and Success to start a chapter on my campus, joined Kappa Delta sorority, all that while working 10 hours a week on-campus. Although it was a little challenging, I was able to do all that and still work hard on my studies to finish the year with an awesome GPA, a President's List, and an Honor Roll award. I consider that my greatest achievement.
That little challenge taught me resilience. That resilience has given me the ability to keep fighting, pushing, and never stopping to work on my dreams. If a particular method or approach I use in my studies does not work, there are other approaches that I will use. There are times I would hit an obstacle and life will throw challenges at me but having that resilience will help me succeed in my studies and take me to where I want to be in life.
My future goal is to help law enforcement agencies identify the most elusive suspects in an investigation. I should be able to work on old unsolved (cold) cases involving Black people using the existing details of the crime and other evidence to determine a behavior pattern. Also, I want to use the skills and education to contribute to the change I want to see in my countries of origin, Nigeria, and Cameroon. They are currently exploited by greedy, illiterate, and incompetent leaders in the government.
Additionally, “To whom much is given, much is expected” is a quote I live by. When we receive so many blessings, it is expected that we use those blessings to bless other people and positively impact their lives. The satisfaction I get from impacting the community has made me more grateful and thankful for the little things I have in life which is why I have a big goal of owning charity foundations in the future where I would provide capital to people to start-up businesses and fend for their families, and issue scholarships to students to sponsor their college education. I want to be a part of people’s success stories and give hope to the hopeless. Giving back to the community is important because you are offering something money cannot buy: the priceless offer of love, friendship, care, and warmth. Additionally, sincere and true concern for someone from the community is also offered.
When you change others’ lives, your life is also changed. Giving back does not only lead to one making lots of connections and building friendships, but it gives a sense of purpose and fulfillment in one’s life. I firmly believe students can change the world and it is up to us to make a difference.

One of my beautiful customers reached out to me with a picture of her in her waistbeads and said this, "I'm still standing and smiling and working on me so I can be better for me. A better me will be a better mommy for my kids. It's amazing how the smallest bead around your waist can make you feel like a star. I have worked out harder and been more focused on losing this weight, I feel good! Thank you!". At that moment, I shed tears of joy because that is my mission. Opportunity for Black Women Scholarship
There is a famous quote by Og Mandino which I live by. It states that “failure will never overtake me if my determination to succeed is strong enough”. My determination to succeed is so strong that I never consider my losses or setbacks as failures. Rather, I see them as opportunities to either struggle and win or learn from the errors. What matters to me is the courage to persist until the best result is achieved. I am passionate about learning and determined to succeed which is why I always keep pushing and working to achieve my goals and never letting obstacles stop me.
The one critical moment that shaped me into who I am today is when I immigrated to the U.S from Nigeria. The moment I came to the U.S changed my life because I had come to a new country to live a new life with better education, and living conditions. Although I was happy about the new shift in life and available opportunities, I was not accustomed to the culture, academic system, and weather. More importantly, I experienced something I had never experienced before, Racism. I noticed that some of my White teachers did not like me and that started to impact my grades and participation in their classes. I found myself having to work extra harder to pass their classes and was studying with a lack of enthusiasm. My hard work and failure to give up earned me an A in their classes. That little challenge taught me resilience. I know that I will not always win and get the results that I want.

My dream is to contribute to the reduced rate at which black families are left without justice and black people are convicted based on the color of their skin. Additionally, I have a big goal of owning charity foundations in the future where I would provide capital to people to start-up businesses and fend for their families, and issue scholarships to students to sponsor their college education. I want to be a part of people’s success stories and give hope to the hopeless.
By giving me this scholarship, you are not only helping me finish college debt-free and achieve my dreams but you are also contributing to people's success stories through the lives I will touch and helping many black families who will in the future get the justice that they seek and live a fulfilled life.
