Bio

I am a student who finds joy in creativity of all forms. I am enamored by the way culture and artistic expression shape the world around us, whether through music, dance or the languages we use to communicate. I enjoy studying the Spanish language, hoping to incorporate it into my future practice as a bilingual medical provider. In my free time I enjoy singing and songwriting and often express myself through the art of salsa dancing. I aspire to obtain my doctorate so I can be of greater assistance to the latino communities in the US and around the world, helping to advocate for a community that historically has not had the most reliable access to mental healthcare.

I’ve crowd-surfed at major festivals and sweated through countless small-venue pits, but my favorite metal memory is the first time I saw Ladrones in concert. Having been a fan for a year, I was considering the idea of flying to Guadalajara to see them live when they announced a last-minute tour run in California. My flight from Atlanta to San Jose was booked within the hour. Meeting the small, but enthusiastic group of fans who arrived early, getting my hand-drawn sign autographed, and watching the band record a video for a friend who couldn’t make the trip reminded me that great things often come from humble beginnings. My love for Heavy Metal and healthcare have the same origin story. One rooted in a search for meaning, a desire for connection, and the perfect amount of pent-up aggression that demanded an immediate outlet. From the moment I heard the dueling guitar riffs of Zacky Vengeance and Synyster Gates carrying M.Shadows’ opening scream on “Bat Country” by Avenged Sevenfold, blasting from a level of Guitar Hero through a box television set, my world changed forever. A 10-year-old girl that had only known pop hits, R&B, and the occasional Slim Shady track, suddenly found a sound that gazed into the deepest parts of her inner rage, creativity, and passion nobody else understood. Put simply, I was obsessed. Nearly 2 decades later, everyone who knows me knows how much I live for metal, although my downstairs neighbors may not always appreciate it. Bands like Korn, Tool, Drowning Pool, and Slipknot have given me confidence in my self-expression and connected me to a community of like-minded individuals who appreciate the world as I do. That sense of belonging is something I hope to help others find through my pursuit of healthcare, with a focus on holistic medical practices and a biomedical approach to mental health and substance abuse. Metal has taught me that great healing often comes first from a place of ultimate despair. Papa Roach was my first concert at the age of 12 followed by my first metal festival, Rockstar Uproar featuring Disturbed, Avenged Sevenfold, and Stone Sour at 13. Metal got me hooked on the infectious dropped tunings, intricate melodies, and emotional honesty of the music. Today some of my favorite artists include Ladrones, Varials, Spiritbox, Paleface Swiss, and Plini. Returning to school has been one of the best decisions of my life, but it doesn’t come without a share of challenges for a working adult. The balancing act that is my pursuit of education has felt harder than choosing between Korn’s Follow the Leader and Slipknot’s self-titled album on vinyl with my last 25 dollars. This past semester, life became more complicated when I got laid off from my product management job of 3 and a half years due to corporate financial strains tied to tariff-related administrative changes. The job that offered me flexibility to pursue my education while maintaining financial stability was gone overnight, but my bills and goals remained. Today I often find myself calculating how many hours must be worked to minimize student loans and save for my doctorate program, all while preserving enough time to honor my studies. This scholarship will secure the remaining funding I need to finish my bachelor’s degree, allowing me to reserve federal aid for the financial needs of medical school. Without the pressure of taking on extra hours or odd jobs to avoid loans, I can dedicate more time to school, research opportunities, and my volunteer work, particularly within the Latino recovery communities of the greater Atlanta area. Music has carried me through every season of my life, every long night and passed exam, reminding me that my transformation is constant and my dreams are only beginning to take flight. As Avenged Sevenfold reminds us, “Seize the day or die regretting the time you lost.”
