My experiences as a young dancer in a predominantly white dance company greatly influenced my perspective on equality and justice. During that time, I faced bias and exclusion. I was often isolated from my white peers, placed in the back during performances, and made to feel different because of my race and my family's financial circumstances. These experiences were painful, but they taught me resilience and perseverance. Rather than allowing discrimination to discourage me, I used it as motivation to create positive change in my own community. When I entered high school, I became actively involved in organizations that empowered me to serve others and advocate for inclusion. Through my participation in the Black Student Union, Sisters for Sisters, and The Develettes, I have worked to mentor younger Black students and provide them with positive role models. I wanted them to see that their voices matter and that their dreams are achievable, regardless of the obstacles they may face.
