I am Melaniya, a Russian immigrant whose adventure from Russia to the USA in 2006 has deeply inspired my inventive vision. Bridging my background and American existence through my artwork, I provide an extraordinary multicultural perspective. I participate in pre-university applications at MIAD, CVTC, and the University of Wisconsin-Stout Early College Credit program, demonstrating my commitment to the arts. People describe me as a fun and loving person, who is not afraid to show her true colors or dance in a room without music. One of my maximum unique artwork portions is a portrait that explores the theme of identifying among my Russian and American cultures. "Decision" is about contemplating between my two cultural identities--This piece became presented in the MaryLu Scholarship at the Phipps Center for the Arts High School Exhibition. The reputation affirmed the significance of my paintings and recommended I keep using artwork to navigate and explicit my cultural identity. Another giant piece is about the small moments in memory. Clementines is inspired by my soccer coach who would hand out small clementines to my team before and after games. we would peel open the fresh fruit and share it amongst ourselves. To convey my emotions of togetherness, my art teacher presented me with a large, 32 x 64-inch blank canvas for me to explore my emotions. the value of community is further cherished as the painting hangs in my mother's kitchen, where my mom and I would sing and dance-- making dinner for our family. The value and cherish of small moments-- such as from my soccer team and my mom's cooking, is further explored through the warmth and vibrancy of the fresh citrus. I believe that the special experiences my art has given me were the opportunities to bring new people into my life. My art has given me many opportunities beyond exhibitions, but it was a way of communicating. From my family's immigration in 2006, there are still a lot of communication boundaries that I wish to overcome with my art. One of my artworks, Growing Up, is a self-portrait that has a deeper message than braiding hair, it's about passing on my heritage and tradition through hair. Hair is a crucial part of my culture, and passing the tradition from my mother braiding my hair to now being independent, is conveyed through each mark of chalk pastels. After college, I aspire to become an art teacher and advocate for students, particularly those from immigrant or disadvantaged backgrounds. I want to create a supportive and inclusive classroom environment where students can explore their creativity and develop their artistic skills. By sharing my journey and experiences, I hope to inspire them to embrace their unique cultural identities and use their voices to effect positive change in their communities. My goal is to empower the next generation of artists to use their creativity to bring about positive change in their lives and society.

Art has a true potential to inspire, people unify and make a change. I would like to inspire the viewers with my art and be an agent of change completing my art with messages about identity, acceptance, and successful assimilation in a new country which reflects my personal experience of immigration. I came to the United States from Russia in 2006 and my migration had a great impact on my artwork, so, I will continue creating work that will raise awareness of the issue of immigration. My goal is to make artwork that can change the world by helping people understand each other and tolerate each other’s differences. In this case, I will try to interweave some of the aspects of my Russian ethnicity with the environment in which I now find myself – the United States, to showcase the layered process of cultural assimilation. By painting, sculpting, and creating mixed media art, I have a goal of being able to communicate tales that are touching to any immigrant or anyone willing to undergo the immigrant’s experience. All in all, this narrative can promote a series of correct understandings to the public, thereby reducing prejudice and fighting for a more tolerant society. Looking at the future, I am eager to apply all my creativity and previous practice to help future generations become successful artists. This means that my positive change agenda will entail championing the students, especially the immigrants and the disadvantaged. To foster positive attitudes toward art, I will try to draw the students into a more positive nature in the class to make them have a positive attitude about art and use it to enhance society through self-expression. My desire is for them to appreciate their cultures and speak out for the changes they want to see in their societies. Promoting youth's interests in art enhances their critical thinking skills, and confidence, as well as positively channeling their emotions and creativity. In conclusion, I plan to make a positive impact on the world through my art by promoting cultural understanding, advocating for students, and fostering creativity in the classroom. By becoming an art teacher, I hope to inspire empathy, foster community, and contribute to a more inclusive and compassionate society. Through these efforts, I aim to empower the next generation of artists to use their creativity to bring about positive change in their lives and communities.

Video games are undoubtedly one of the most beneficial inventions in my life that have affected my leisure time for my thinking abilities, friendship circle, and imagination. I can say that it is thanks to this activity that I received meaning in some aspects of my life, which was initially a harmless pastime. Most activities involve planning, logical analysis, and a timely response to situations encountered in the field. For instance, the effects of playing real-time strategy games such as "StarCraft" or first-person puzzle-solving games like "Portal" on my critical analysis and multitasking skills are immense. These games make me think critically, come up with solutions, and solve problems in given scenarios, which are all very important in academic work and life. The younger generation should take advantage of the opportunities and flexibility that gaming has provided for me to improve in school and problem-solving in daily life. First-person games, such as "Minecraft" and "The Sims," are sandbox-style games for me, where I can construct, allocate, and develop. With the help of these games, I was able to discover the basic principles of architecture and design and challenged myself to create new architectural pieces and ideas. Apart from being a fun exercise, this mode of creative learning has also impacted my dreams and the course I would like to pursue. In particular, gaming has instilled in me the desire for design and technology courses dealing with both right- and left-brain aspects. Moreover, video games have been instrumental in fostering social connections. Contrary to the stereotype of gamers as isolated individuals, many games encourage and facilitate social interaction. Multiplayer online games like "Stardew Valley" are collaborating games where I could build and restore connections with my friends. Although the act of planting strawberries and building a farm with friends sounds simple at most, the sense of community and camaraderie in these gaming environments has helped me build lasting relationships and a support network that extends beyond the virtual world. Video games have also been a source of emotional support and stress relief. Life, particularly during challenging times such as the COVID-19 pandemic, can be overwhelming. Video games offer an escape, a way to unwind and immerse myself in different worlds where I can take a break from reality. "Animal Crossing: New Horizons" provided a soothing, positive experience during the pandemic’s lockdowns, offering a sense of normalcy and control in an uncertain time. This emotional respite has been crucial for maintaining my mental health and well-being. Last but not least, several games have levels and enemies that are very hard to beat and would entail numerous tries to pass. This ‘trial and error’ technique of gaming has made me learn that in any problem-solving activity, one is likely to fail before succeeding. What has contributed to personal growth through consequent gaming is the tenacity acquired that aids in solving problems with confidence and willingness. This perseverance and resilience have been invaluable, teaching me to approach challenges with a growth mindset and understanding that failure is often a stepping stone to success. In conclusion, video games have positively impacted my life in numerous ways, from enhancing cognitive and social skills to providing a creative outlet and emotional support. They have shaped my interests, influenced my career aspirations, and taught me valuable life lessons. Far from being just a pastime, video games have been a meaningful and enriching part of my life, contributing to my development and well-being in profound ways.

Picking up a paintbrush for the first time was an exhilarating experience for a three year old. Although the paper in front of me on easel did not make sense to my parents, the strokes of purple and green opened a door to a new world to express myself. The everyday world around me is a constant source of inspiration for my art. The cultural tapestry of my surroundings, shaped by diverse interactions and experiences, fuels my creativity. Everyday encounters, from casual conversations to the architectural beauty of cityscapes, inform my artistic vision. The blend of my Ukrainian heritage with American culture enables me to explore themes of identity, belonging, and integration in my work. Nature also plays a significant role in my inspiration. The changing seasons, the play of light and shadow, and the intricate details of flora and fauna all find their way into my pieces. I aim to capture the essence of these moments, translating them into visual narratives that resonate with viewers. Additionally, I took precollege courses at UW-Stout and the Milwaukee Institute of Art & Design (MIAD) to challenge myself and expand my artistic skills. These courses provided me with new techniques and perspectives, enhancing my ability to express the complexities of my experiences and heritage. By drawing from the world around me, I strive to create art that not only reflects my personal journey but also invites others to explore their own connections to culture and environment. Through my work, I hope to bridge cultural divides and foster a deeper understanding of the immigrant experience, encouraging dialogue and promoting cultural appreciation.

"Clementines," my largest piece at 32 x 64 inches, is more than just a depiction of citrus fruit. It represents sharing moments and memories with cherished people. During soccer seasons, my coach would bring clementines, and we would split them open and share them. This simple act of sharing inspired the piece. I use my art to create memories and express emotions everyone can feel. As a rising college freshman majoring in Studio Arts, I have always been passionate about exploring different forms of art. My experiences at precollege programs at MIAD and CVTC, as well as drawing classes through the Early College Credit program at UW-Stout, have helped me develop my skills and find my artistic voice. Being an active participant in theater and speech and debate has also influenced my art. I have received perfect scores in solo acting each year, which has taught me the importance of expression and storytelling. As a Russian immigrant, I aim to incorporate my cultural background into my work, creating pieces that resonate with a wide audience. Winning the MaryLu Scholarship this year has been a great honor, and I hope to continue my journey by receiving the Natalie Jude Women in the Arts Scholarship. Additionally, I participated in the Early College Credit program at my high school, taking drawing classes at the University of Wisconsin-Stout. These experiences allowed me to develop my skills and expand my artistic horizons. My dedication to art extends beyond the classroom. I have been active in theater and speech and debate, earning perfect scores in solo acting each year. These activities have helped me develop my performance skills and have given me a deeper appreciation for the fine arts as a whole. I was also honored to receive the MaryLu Scholarship this year, which has further motivated me to pursue my passion for art.
