Hello! Welcome to my profile. My name is Makya. I will be the first in my family to attend college. That alone makes myself and my parents so proud! I currently have a 3.9 GPA. Since I have done so well this school year my academic advisor has entered me in AP classes and dual credit classes for the upcoming year. I want to go to college for cosmetology as well as business marketing. I also have a gift in accounting. I inspire to want my own beauty shop one day. Ten years ago when my mother and father divorced I was at my lowest emotional state. I felt lost, separated, confused, lonely, and just down right depressed. The first time in my life I ever had suicidal thoughts. My mom has bipolar and depression and has always been on medication to ease her pain for as long as I can remember. I didn’t want to live life like that though. She had been in and out of hospitals and doctor’s offices for years trying to find the right medication. A complete zombie if you will. I chose to start therapy and it actually does help. When I was taught to express my feelings and to be honest with myself about my thoughts I began to overpower my illness. My goal has always been to go to college. I refuse to let depression win! Over the years it has destroyed relationships over and over. Sadly to the best. I’ve realized other people without depression just can’t relate. They don’t understand why maybe you don’t want to talk or be around anyone for a week. I’ve learned to realize it’s okay that they simply don’t understand. You can’t understand what you don’t know. You have to give grace in life as you would want for yourself from others.

Greetings! My name is Makya and I will be the first in my family to attend college. That alone makes me and my family so proud of myself! I currently have a 3.9 GPA. Since I have done so well this past year my academic advisor entered me into Advanced Placement classes and dual credit classes for the upcoming school year. I’m excited for this challenge! This will also help me to get my 3.9 GPA higher. I wish to have a 4.0! I’m from Texas. I have an older brother and younger sister. I am passionate, an over achiever, and have a great work ethic. The things I am passionate about are doing hair, makeup, and succeeding beyond when I am able to attend college. I arrived on the list because I have had a love for cosmetology since I was three years old playing with my Barbie’s hair. What inspired me to this career path was as a young child when my parents divorced I was looking for something to keep my mind off of all the problems going on around me. My step mother is the one who actually taught me how to braid for the very first time. She is in cosmetology and I was privileged to watch all her success throughout the years. I know without a doubt that is my calling. I actually braid hair currently in high school to earn money from my peers. I just lack a license. My short term goal is to go to school to achieve my license. Cosmetology will still be important to me in ten years because that is my calling. I love doing hair, playing with makeup on myself and others, and putting individual lashes on others to make them feel secure and beautiful. I’m also into skin care. At one time in my life my skin caused me to become insecure with acne. Prior I had always had great clear skin. I finally found the products that worked for me and my particular skin. I finally got it cleared up within six months and since then I’ve been hooked. I have yet to learn how to do acrylic nails but I’m excited to get the opportunity when I attend college. My dream and long term goal is to have my own shop doing it all and having others work for me. I know my skill set and determination will inspire others. I’ve always had the best grades in math. This will definitely help me to have a profitable business. I’m actually taking dual credit accounting and business this upcoming school year. I really want my own business instead of working for others when I become an adult. I do not want to be limited in what I can and cannot do. If I am chosen I am sure to not disappoint. This financial support will help me to get through cosmetology school and my dual credit classes I am currently paying for. Thank you for your time.

Diana Taurasi is my personal favorite. She has won 5 gold medals and has been committed to the WNBA for twenty four years! That’s a long time to keep your body healthy on a professional level. That in itself is remarkable. This year will be the sixth time she was chosen for the USA team. Taurasi holds the record for the most Olympic titles in US basketball history, winning consecutive golds with Team USA at Athens 2004, Beijing 2008, London 2012, Rio 2016, and Tokyo 2020 in 2021. After starting her basketball career in high school, Taurasi quickly gained fame. She is the second-most decorated FIBA athlete on the planet with five Olympic gold medals, three FIBA World Cup gold medals and a FIBA World Cup bronze medal in her through her 24-year USA Basketball career. She is a past winner of the WNBA's Community Assist Award, which is given to WNBA players who go the extra mile to make “assists” for those in need. Tireless in her volunteerism, she has worked with One Community, Save the Family and many others, especially helping women and children. Taurasi, is an WNBA All-Star who won the league's Most Valuable Player award in 2009. She has also spent time playing for a variety of teams overseas during the WNBA's offseason. Taurasi said the highlight of her career has been playing for only one WNBA franchise.

Hello! My name is Makya and I will be the first in my family to attend college. That alone makes me and my family so proud of myself! My disability is I suffer with depression and at times have anxiety panic attacks. As you continue to read you will see I have not allowed that to discourage me from a bright future. What inspired me to this career path was as a young child when my parents divorced I was looking for something to keep my mind off of all the problems going around me. I finally got it cleared up within 6 months and since then I’ve been hooked. I have yet to learn how to do acrylic nails but I’m excited to get the opportunity when I attend college. Hello! My name is Makya and I will be the first in my family to attend college. That alone makes me and my family so proud of myself! I currently have a 3.8 GPA. Since I have done so well my academic advisor entered me into Advanced Placement classes and dual credit classes for the upcoming school year. I’m excited for the challenge! This will also help me to get my 3.8 GPA higher. I finally got it cleared up within 6 months and since then I’ve been hooked. I have yet to learn how to do acrylic nails but I’m excited to get the opportunity when I attend college. Thank you for your time.

The Bible. The reason I would choose only one book to read in the world is because that’s all the guidance you would ever need in one book. The Bible shows you Jesus came for the sinners. He came for everyone who had nobody. He died on the cross for our sins so we could spend eternity with him. All you have to do is believe. That’s pretty cool right? Jesus doesn’t care about how we look, the types of clothes we wear, or what we may have done in our past. Jesus simply wants to have a relationship with his people. According to the Bible how we spend time with Jesus is by being in his presence, reading the Bible to get to know him, praying, and spreading the gospel. The Bible shows God is an awesome God and he never lets us down. Not even like our own earthly mother and father would. He never gives up on us. All you have to do to become a believer is ask for forgiveness and ask God to come into your heart. God says in the bible, “On earth you will have many tribulations but take heart I have overcome the world.” He will never forsake us. That’s pretty incredible right? How many people have turned their back on you in your lifetime? How pleasing is it to know one person who will not at any cost and that is the Lord Jesus Christ. He came from above to be nailed to a cross so that we may live in heaven with Him.

I have dyslexia but I will not let this learning disability define me! I found out in the third grade I had dyslexia and at first I was embarrassed. I knew other kids would make fun of me and bully me because of it. I am now going into my sophomore year of high school with a 3.8 GPA and my academic advisor is setting me up for one Pre-AP class this upcoming year. She really thinks I can do it! I will be taking Pre-AP Geometry. I’ve always been great with math regardless of my disability. My GPA has boosted my confidence tremendously because now I know I can be successful. It may just take me more time to catch onto some things and that’s okay. My mother is so proud of me on my accomplishment and inspiring to go to college. She wants nothing more than to see me walk across that stage! I am determined to go to college. I am wanting to get into a college in the Dallas area for a business degree. I’ll show everyone how wrong they were! I can’t wait! I want my own business because of how successful I am with math. My ability with accounting will help my business to be successful. I feel like I am a good candidate for this scholarship because of my determination and dedication. Also, it would extremely help because of my mom’s financial need. She works retail and makes it pay check to pay check. This will lift a burden off of the both of us to help with my college degree. I want to be financially stable from college so I can do exactly like you are right now helping others like yourself. That is going to feel so rewarding. I talk and inspire others that get bullied from dyslexia at school but I’ve never been able to help financially for someone’s future. People like us with the determination and work ethic can change the world. It only takes one person to spark a change. I know this is my calling to help others with dyslexia and to show it can be done. We can be successful adults with college degrees! We can have our own businesses and do whatever everyone else is capable of doing and more. Thank you for your time and thank you for having a spark in yourself to change the narrative! You should be proud.

I didn’t want to live like that though. I’ve learned to realize it’s okay that they don’t understand. You can’t understand what you don’t know. You have to give grace in life as you would want for yourself from others.

Hello! My name is Makya Neal. I’m so sorry to hear about your mother Sheri. My mother has struggled with bipolar and depression for as long as I can remember. In the past two years I have realized I also have depression. I did not want to be on medication like my mother so I go to a therapist once a week. What I have learned is to be honest with myself and others about my true thoughts. I myself have thought suicidal thoughts. It is a heartbreaking disease but I have found when I have these thoughts to go for a walk, talk about my feelings to family or friends that really genuinely care, read a book, and also cosmetology helps ease my depression. I feel as if that is my calling. My God given talent. That’s what I want to go to college for as well as a business degree because I want my own shop. I have big dreams and there is nothing more rewarding than my mother watching me walk across that stage! I currently have a 3.8 GPA. My mother has never wanted anything more than for me to go to college. My mental health has influenced my relationships in a negative way. I block friends and family away at times when I need them. My mother making me go to a therapist after learning about my suicidal thoughts has extremely helped with relationships recently. I would go weeks without hardly talking to anyone nor did I want to. My friends never understand my behavior when I go through my depression spells. It’s like the world caves in on me. No one understands or even wants to. My career aspirations to go to college to get a degree has helped my mental health because I feel like there is hope at the end of the tunnel. My mother has always struggled financially and going to college is going to help me. I do not want to struggle like that in my adult life. I believe that’s why she is depressed half of the time. Financial hardship will definitely bring out anxiety along with depression. I have had to take my mother to the hospital on multiple occasions thinking she was having a heart attack and the whole time it was a panic attack. In one year I know I took her at least 10 times. Medication helps her I believe but it never fades away entirely. At times I feel like I need medication along with going to the therapist but I don’t want to be like my mother. Once you’re on medication it’s almost impossible to get off. Maybe I will have to one day. I am currently going to homeless shelters and talking about mental illness and how it has affected my life. I believe if we make others believe there is light at the end of the tunnel they will hold on for dear life. It will get better. We will get better. God is for us and not against us. Everything in this life he has promised will surely come to pass!
