For many when they hear the word veganism, they associate it with dieting, or just simply unpleasant. However, I associate this dietary choice with oneness with the environment, balance, and true harmony for organs on the inside and out. As an African American woman, it is pertinent that I am aware of my health in light of studies done on the general health of African Americans in America. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention African Americans ages 18-49 are two times as likely to die from heart disease than whites. This fact makes a small eating habit life-changing. Furthermore, African American women are disproportionately affected by chronic health conditions such as obesity, heart disease, and type 2 diabetes. Studies have shown that a well-balanced vegan diet can help reduce the risk of these diseases by promoting weight loss, improving blood sugar levels, and lowering cholesterol. The negative notion behind vegan food as less flavorful or satisfying is completely false. There are rich traditions of plant-based foods within African American cuisine, such as collard greens, okra, and black-eyed peas. Embracing veganism can be an opportunity to revive and celebrate culinary traditions within the black community. I was raised eating meat so I know how hard it is mentally to begin switching over diets. However, I am in my transition period before fully adjusting to a vegan lifestyle. This means I often chose to incorporate vegan dishes into my diet regularly. This adjustment was not easy at first but, I know that it will improve my current quality of life. I was first inspired by Tabitha Brown on Tik Tok with her soul-warming videos. On my journey so far my favorite vegan dish I have had is from the Atlanta vegan restaurant Slutty Vegan. I love the way Chef Pinky Cole incorporates unimaginably flavorful foods such as bacon, cheese, and shrimp, then makes them vegan. Moreover, I have expanded my taste-testing conquest and have recently been eating vegan recipes of Indian food specifically Chana Masala. My dream career is to be an entertainment attorney working in the music industry on behalf of record labels. The musician's lifestyle and diet are notorious for being draining for the body. The album '1989' holds an immense amount of nostalgia for me. Specifically, track 6 entitled Shake It Off. I can remember my earliest memory of this song playing at my fourth-grade graduation ceremony. My classmates and I wiggled our little bodies until all the excitement left them and we were exhausted. My favorite part of the song was when Taylor sang " I'm lightning on my feet". I had a meticulous little choreography at the time of vigorously tapping my feet to make my light-up sketchers twinkle, in order to live the lyrics. Ever since I was a kid music has been my favorite part of life. As I have grown older now and the light-up sketcher doesn't fit my era of life anymore I've moved on to sparkly Crocs. Just as this song describes, one must shake off the trials and tribulations of life and not forget just to have fun. Entering into my young adulthood, now you may be thinking what's the big deal? One of the most important aspects of truly achieving positivity is one’s ability to be fully Immersed in their community. For most, it is either way too difficult or too easy to get swept up in their community. Interconnectivity, inclusivity and impact define community for me. With these attributes, one is able to either positively or negatively impact a community. The special thing about community is the way it can be established effortlessly anywhere. Thus, an interconnected, inclusive, and impactful individual is not only an innately great citizen but a spectacular citizen within their community and has a greater impact on the world. Beginning with interconnectivity essentially provides the foundation of a strong community. Achieving this skill requires authentic empathy and compassion. For most this is natural, but others need to be guided. Determining how one is connected to the people surrounding them is the first and most important step. When seeking common ground, you inevitably learn how you and your neighbor aren’t so different. Through this is how true community is established. Moving down to Savannah, Georgia from Atlanta, Georgia was a significant change for me. The whole freshman first-semester college experience itself can definitely be overwhelming. Though this change was drastic from my previous childhood life as it is for most, I deeply commend the way my Student Orientation Leaders (SOL) composed of upper-classmen peers introduced us to campus. I knew I was going to prevail in establishing a place in the community through their leadership and guidance. From food trucks, group games and parties, I can say I was well-acclimated to campus after that. All due to the hard work of students who not only recognized how important it is but how connecting the student body can make all of the difference. Specifically, I can recall we played a game of “Whose Who?”, which consisted of finding someone with your same name. Though it might sound silly it allowed our class to intermingle and learn about each other to ultimately establish a connection. Furthermore, allowing us to establish a sense of community amongst people we would have considered strangers. Needless to say, without the thoughtfulness of the SOLs organization our time would have been way duller. Thus, through their commitment to finding how our new freshman student community connects various bonds have been established. I aspire to continue to implement this by joining this institution. In light of the supreme court's regressive ruling on affirmative action, it is now more crucial than ever to not only enhance but truly nurture the HBCU experience for myself and others. I plan on joining the SOLs organization, to cultivate an inclusive, positive, empowering space for black-identifying students in a country where the odds are stackedx against them. Though it might be a small impact it will be worthwhile, and I am more than ready to lead the way.

In hindsight, this may seem like a small action but it truly has been the greatest gift in beginning my career and adult life. What's Love Got to Do With It? For most people when they think of this movie, they remember the beautiful life of the late Tina Turner. However, for me, this film was the first time I had ever seen psychological and physical abuse in a romantic relationship. The imagery of abusive relationships continued in my adolescence, as my favorite show was not Barney, nor Sesame Street, but Law and Order. Looking back I notice how I was consistently shown and made aware of unhealthy romantic relationships. Due to this education, I was determined to be able to help others especially african american women know that they deserved healthy and safe relationships. Unfortunately, television and film would not be my only encounter with the dark topic. Standing five feet tall and nine years older than me, my eldest sister was so invincible to me. Her mortality and true fragileness struck me the night she came home with unexplainable bruises and a gash on her body. Typically a symbol of grace and aspiration for me, that night her body seemed to finally personify the trauma she held so tightly in secret. I experienced my first heartbreak that night too, even as a child I knew something was disturbing when she said she would return to talk to him tomorrow. Little did I know I had just witnessed her breaking point, in this moment of vulnerability she found strength. Luckily she was going to attempt a dangerous and slightly scary act. She went and ended their relationship. Though she may not be in the relationship and her scars have healed, the memory of that low point lingers. In the wake of my experience, I decided that I would pursue a career in law, currently studying criminal justice as an undergraduate at an HBCU. I wanted to make sure the women who were hurt in any way had the help they deserved. Growing up as a young black woman in America I had always heard the phrase "no one got us, like we got us" and I always wanted in on this unspoken sisterly support. Not only did I subscribe to the notion I wanted to live by it in providing a sense of relief. Even if I couldn't stop the abuse completely. In our progressive society, there is still a stigma surrounding abuse victims. Especially within the black community victims are much less talked to about the abuse since their mere existence juxtaposes society's stereotype of black women. I plan to start my own practice to legally help abused victims in Atlanta Georgia, seek justice. I have come to learn that with true support, the correct environment, and education about the options, victims can be left feeling more empowered. With this effort, I can do my dudilliengce in removing any shameful stigma from relationship abuse victims of African American women.

Growing up in Atlanta, Georgia as an African American woman, has given me a unique set of experiences. Thus, earning itself a name for modern entertainment as well as becoming a notoriously thriving music mecca for various forms of the entertainment industry. My passion for music has always been like a second heartbeat. I used to accredit this innate interest to my ability to easily learn a song and sing it word for word as if I wrote it. Many people with access to the internet inevitably encounter one group of individuals. Financial advisors or more commonly known as “Finance Bros”. For the most part, I had no earthly idea what the substance of their conversions had relevance to me. I just knew they often talked on podcasts and demographically had no similarities to me, or so I thought. My most recent read was the book Black Girl Finance by Selina Flavius. Since I have torn down limiting beliefs of money that lingered with me subconsciously. I picked up this book in order to get a better grasp on what money management is from the perspective of people who looked like me. The mere fact that I picked this book up was liberating in itself. While reading I discovered how proper budgeting is the transformative magical potion that leads to financial success and prosperity. Being a college student and fairly young I wanted to take control of my money management in order to be able to attain my future goals such as going to law school, with great financial stance and peace of mind. After my first year of college, I was in financial turmoil and in danger of not being able to continue my dreams of education due to a lack of financing. By reading this booking and applying the methods, and truly soaking up the knowledge I am able to be smarter with my money, as I continue to accumulate it. In my earliest adolescence memory, I can recall being told that reading is fundamental, and as I have continued to grow and gain experience I can attest to the trueness of this statement. There is no secret that obtaining knowledgeable information by reading is not only vital, but it allows one to truly come face to face with text. Committing to the action of reading, which slightly forces one’s mind to shake hands with the material one is trying to absorb. This idea is what I believe truly helped me allow myself to digest previously foreign ideas of finance. Mentally I have learned that the only obstacle stopping me from achieving financial freedom was my financial discipline, mindset, and intentional action. Since reading this book I have been able to begin to properly build my savings in preparation for the fall 2023 semester, yet with the help of this scholarship I would be able to continue to pursue my passions and dream of graduating college and obtaining my degree debt free.
