Bio

My name is Makinzy Jones, and I am a recent graduate of Godby High School in Tallahassee, Florida. This fall, I will attend Tallahassee State College to earn an Associate in Arts degree in Health Science before transferring to Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University to complete my bachelor's degree in Health Science with a concentration in Pre-Occupational Therapy. My long-term goal is to earn a doctorate in Occupational Therapy, become a licensed occupational therapist, and eventually teach in higher education while mentoring future healthcare professionals. I am passionate about helping others improve their quality of life through compassion, service, and education. I enjoy giving back to my community, encouraging others, and creating opportunities that help people succeed. I am a strong scholarship candidate because I am hardworking, determined, and committed to academic excellence. Throughout high school, I balanced challenging coursework, volleyball, leadership activities, community service, and a part-time job while maintaining strong grades. These experiences strengthened my discipline, resilience, and time management skills. Receiving this scholarship would help reduce the financial burden of college and allow me to focus on achieving my educational and career goals. I am committed to using my education to serve others, advocate for those in need, and make a lasting impact in my community and beyond.

Charlene K. Howard Chogo Scholarship
The opportunity to meet Ms. Charlene K. Howard makes this scholarship especially meaningful to me. My mother had the privilege of working alongside Ms. Howard at Florida A&M University, where they served students together before both later continued their careers at Florida State University. Although Ms. Howard worked in Academic Advising and my mother worked in Student Affairs; they remained friends. Ms. Howard was more than an educational leader; she genuinely cared about people, valued meaningful relationships, and remained committed to supporting students and her colleagues. Even as a young person, I recognized that she believed education had the power to change lives, and that example has stayed with me. As a Black woman, I understand the importance of having role models who encourage us to pursue our dreams with confidence. Throughout high school, I have worked to empower others through academic excellence, leadership, community service, and perseverance. As a Senior Class Top 20 Scholar, National Honor Society member, student leader, varsity volleyball player, and part-time employee, I have learned that empowering women begins with leading by example. Whether volunteering in my community, supporting classmates, encouraging teammates through challenges, or mentoring Russell, I strive to uplift those around me and remind them that success is attainable through determination, resilience, and hard work. Through my mentorship, I encouraged Russell to believe in himself while helping him develop life skills that increased his confidence and made him more independent. Watching his personal growth reinforced my belief that empowerment begins when we invest our time, encouragement, and compassion in others. Those same values inspire me to encourage young women to recognize their own strengths, embrace opportunities, and pursue their goals with confidence. My ambition is to continue that impact through higher education and my future career. I will begin my studies at Tallahassee State College before transferring to Florida A&M University to pursue a degree in Health Science and ultimately become an occupational therapist. My long-term goal is also to teach at the college level, where I can mentor students, provide shadowing opportunities, volunteer in local schools, and encourage young women, especially Black women, to pursue careers in healthcare and higher education with confidence. I believe that every woman deserves someone who believes in her potential, and I hope to be that source of encouragement by helping others recognize their strengths, overcome obstacles, and achieve their goals. Receiving the Charlene K. Howard Scholarship would be an honor because it would allow me to continue the legacy of a woman whose dedication to education, mentorship, and service touched so many lives. Like Ms. Howard, I hope to use education not only to transform my own life but also to create opportunities for others. By investing in education, serving my community, mentoring future students, and lifting others, I want to leave a lasting impact that reflects the values of leadership, service, and women's empowerment that this scholarship was established to honor.
