Growing up in a family where stethoscopes and medical textbooks were as common as dinner conversations, I’ve always been surrounded by the world of healthcare. My favorite aunt is a RN. I look up to her. She’s always told me to pursue my dreams. From a young age, I knew I wanted something bigger and better in life. Her dedication and compassion sparked something in me that has only grown stronger over the years. What really drew me to nursing specifically was seeing all the doctors and nurses working during the pandemic. While everyone was staying home, they were on the front lines. That’s when I realized that nursing isn’t just about medical procedures, it’s about being there for people during their most vulnerable moments and providing comfort alongside care. As a biracial student athlete, I know I’m entering fields where representation matters. According to what I’ve learned, only about 19% of registered nurses are people of color, and African Americans make up less than 13% of the nursing workforce. I want to change that statistic and be part of the solution. I believe that having nurses who look like the diverse communities they serve can make healthcare more culturally sensitive and accessible to everyone. Playing softball has taught me so much about teamwork, pressure management, and perseverance, all skills that I know will translate perfectly to nursing. When you’re in the bottom of the ninth inning with two outs and runners in scoring position, you learn how to stay calm under pressure and make quick, smart decisions. That’s exactly what nurses do every single day in hospitals. The discipline I’ve developed through years of early morning practices and balancing academics with athletics has prepared me for the rigorous demands of nursing school and beyond. My plan is to pursue my nursing degree while continuing to play softball in college. I know it won’t be easy juggling both, but I’ve never backed down from a challenge. Actually, I think having both will make me better at each. Softball keeps me physically and mentally sharp, while my nursing studies will give me a deeper sense of purpose on and off the field. The odds might be stacked against me as an biracial student athlete pursuing nursing, but I’ve never been one to let statistics define my future. Every time I step onto the softball field, I’m competing against players who might underestimate me, and I use that as motivation to prove them wrong. I plan to bring that same energy and determination to my nursing career. Healthcare has always been about service to others, and that’s exactly what I want my life to be about. Through nursing, I can combine my natural empathy, my competitive drive, and my desire to break barriers into a career that will literally save lives and change communities for the better.
Sloane Stephens Doc & Glo Scholarship
My story begins before I was even born, rooted in my mother’s faith and determination. When she was diagnosed with toxoplasmosis during pregnancy, the medical community advised termination, warning of the potential complications and challenges ahead. But my mother saw something different she believed I was destined for greatness and chose to trust in that vision despite overwhelming odds. That early act of faith set the foundation for who I have become today. At 17, I stand as living proof that sometimes the most profound journeys begin with someone believing in possibilities others cannot see. My mother’s courage in the face of medical uncertainty wasn’t just about bringing me into the world, it was about affirming that some things transcend statistics and prognoses. My story is fundamentally about defying expectations and transforming potential obstacles into sources of strength. What began as a high risk pregnancy marked by medical uncertainty has evolved into a life characterized by athletic excellence, academic achievement, and purposeful goals.
The thread that connects my mother’s faith to your current success is the belief that circumstances don’t define destiny determination and faith do. I am living proof that when someone believes in your potential, even against overwhelming odds, extraordinary things become possible. As I move toward college and my nursing career, I carry forward not just my own achievements, but the powerful legacy of a mother who chose hope over fear and a young person who transformed that gift into excellence across every area of life. Pursuing higher education has always been my dream, but the financial reality of my family’s situation makes this goal seem increasingly out of reach without assistance. I am writing to explain why this scholarship would be instrumental in helping me achieve my academic aspirations and build a better future for myself and my family. I am not asking for charity, but rather for an investment in my potential. I am confident that with the opportunity this scholarship provides, I will make the most of my education and use it to create positive change in my life and the lives of others. I will not let this discourage me from pursuing my dreams. I am destined for greatness. I believe in myself. I want to make a difference in the world. With your help I can make it happen. Thank you for considering my application and for supporting students like me who are determined to succeed despite financial obstacles.

Pursuing higher education has always been my dream, but the financial reality of my family’s situation makes this goal seem increasingly out of reach without assistance. I am writing to explain why this scholarship would be instrumental in helping me achieve my academic aspirations and build a better future for myself and my family.
My family faces significant financial challenges that make paying for college extremely difficult. My mother is the sole income earner in our household, working tirelessly to support our family while my father is unable to work due to his disability. Despite her dedication and hard work, a single income is simply not enough to cover both our daily living expenses and the substantial costs associated with higher education. The rising costs of tuition, textbooks, housing, and other educational expenses far exceed what our family can reasonably afford. My father’s disability has not only limited our family’s earning potential but has also created additional medical expenses that strain our already tight budget. While we are grateful for the disability benefits he receives, these payments are modest and primarily go toward essential needs like healthcare, housing, and basic necessities. This leaves little to no resources available for educational investments, despite our family’s strong belief in the value of education.
I am determined to pursue higher education because I understand that it is the key to breaking the cycle of financial hardship and creating opportunities for a more secure future. Education will provide me with the knowledge, skills, and credentials necessary to secure meaningful employment and eventually support not only myself but also contribute to my family’s well being. I am committed to academic excellence and am prepared to work hard to make the most of every educational opportunity. This scholarship would remove the financial barriers that currently stand between me and my educational goals. It would allow me to focus on my studies rather than worrying about how to pay for school or taking on excessive student loan debt that could burden me for years to come. With this support, I could dedicate myself fully to learning, participating in academic programs, and preparing for a career that will enable me to give back to my community.

My family’s financial circumstances have shaped my understanding of both struggle and perseverance. With my father on disability and my mother working tirelessly as our family’s primary breadwinner, I’ve witnessed firsthand the challenges that medical issues and financial constraints can create. Rather than discouraging me, these experiences have crystallized my passion for nursing and my determination to pursue higher education despite the obstacles.
Growing up in a household where every dollar matters has taught me invaluable lessons about resourcefulness, responsibility, and the importance of hard work. I’ve learned to maximize every opportunity, whether in academics or athletics. My desire to play college softball isn’t just about personal achievement but it represents the discipline, teamwork, and goal oriented mindset I’ve developed through years of balancing responsibilities while pursuing my passions. My father’s disability has given me intimate knowledge of the healthcare system from a patient and family perspective. I’ve seen how compassionate, skilled nurses can transform a medical experience from frightening to manageable. This exposure has convinced me that nursing is more than a career choice, it’s my calling to serve others during their most vulnerable moments. My family’s experiences have prepared me to connect with patients who feel overwhelmed by medical challenges or financial stress. My academic dedication and athletic commitments demonstrate my ability to excel when given the opportunity. I’ve maintained strong grades while understanding the weight of my family’s sacrifices. Playing college softball would provide structure and community while I pursue my nursing degree, combining two passions that have sustained me through difficult times. Students like me don’t take educational opportunities for granted. We understand that scholarships represent more than financial assistance, they represent belief in our potential and investment in our futures. When barriers are removed, we often become the healthcare professionals, community leaders, and role models who inspire the next generation to persevere through their own challenges. This scholarship would bridge the gap between my current circumstances and my future as a registered nurse. It would transform my family’s financial limitations from an insurmountable barrier into a source of motivation, allowing me to focus on my studies and athletic goals while preparing to serve others with the same dedication my mother has shown our family. I will rise above. I will pursue a higher education.
YOU GOT IT GIRL SCHOLARSHIP
I embody “YOU GOT IT GIRL” through my unwavering determination to excel in both athletics and academics while pursuing a career dedicated to helping others. Since age 7, I’ve shown up to every practice, every game, and every challenge with the mindset that I can achieve anything I set my mind to. Whether I’m stepping into the batter’s box in a crucial moment or studying for a difficult anatomy exam, I approach each situation with confidence and the belief that hard work pays off. What makes me a “YOU GOT IT GIRL” is my ability to balance competing at a high level in softball while maintaining my academic goals of becoming a nurse. I’ve learned to manage my time effectively, push through physical and mental fatigue, and support my teammates even when facing my own struggles. I don’t just talk about my dreams! I take concrete steps every day to make them happen. The YGIG Scholarship will help me achieve my goals by providing the financial support I need to focus on both my athletic performance and nursing studies without the overwhelming burden of college costs. This scholarship represents more than money, it’s an investment in a young woman who is committed to making a difference both on the field and in healthcare. Softball has been my passion for 10 years, since I first picked up a glove at age 7. What started as a fun activity has become a defining part of who I am, teaching me discipline, teamwork, and resilience. Throughout my career, I’ve achieved several milestones that I’m proud of Recognized as the Most Valuable Player for my exceptional performance and leadership, Game ball 2x for outstanding individual performances in crucial games. Beyond individual accolades, I’ve been a consistent contributor to my team’s success. I take pride in being the teammate others can count on whether that’s getting a clutch hit, making a defensive play, or encouraging others during tough moments. Softball has taught me that individual awards mean nothing without team success, and team success requires every player to give their best effort. My 10 years in softball have prepared me for the demands of college athletics, where I plan to continue competing while pursuing my nursing degree. During my first year on 18u I struggled many challenges. I needed to fix my swing. That met extra practices. That’s where my dad stepped in and helped me with the stands. I was dropping my shoulder that caused me to strike out. Some games I had to sit down because I was struggling. That’s only made want to be a better player. Not only for me but for my teammates. Instead of letting this setback define me, I chose to use it as fuel for growth. Being a student athlete means everything to me because it represents the challenge of excellence in multiple areas of life simultaneously. I’m excited about the opportunity to represent YGIG because your organization embodies the same values I strive to live by empowering young women to pursue their dreams fearlessly, supporting athletes who are building toward something meaningful beyond sports, and proving that girls can excel in any arena they choose. As a YGIG representative, I would proudly share my journey of balancing competitive athletics with nursing school, showing other young women that they don’t have to choose between their athletic dreams and their career aspirations they can excel at both.

Bre Hoy Memorial Softball Scholarship
At 7 years old, I stepped into my first softball field. Little did I know that this moment would mark the beginning of a journey that would shape not only my athletic abilities but also my character, work ethic, and future career aspirations. Over 10 years of playing softball, the sport has become far more than a game, it has been my teacher, my sanctuary, and the foundation upon which I’ve built my dreams of becoming a nurse and continuing my softball career in college. Softball taught me resilience in ways that textbooks never could. For example, when my team was losing and came back, or when you struck out in a crucial moment but learned to bounce back. Every strikeout became a lesson in perseverance, every error an opportunity to demonstrate accountability to my teammates. The sport instilled in me the understanding that failure is not final it’s simply feedback. Balancing academics with year round softball has taught me time management skills that will serve me well in college and my nursing career. My commitment to softball has actually improved my academic performance, as the structure and goal setting skills transferred directly to my studies. I see college softball as an opportunity to challenge myself at the highest level while pursuing my academic goals. The discipline, time management, and leadership skills I’ve honed through softball will be essential as I navigate the demanding coursework required for nursing school. The parallels between softball and nursing are striking. Both require quick thinking, precise execution, and the ability to perform under pressure. Both demand teamwork, communication, and a commitment to continuous improvement. My experiences in softball have also taught me empathy and compassion. Comforting a teammate after a tough loss or celebrating others’ successes even when personally struggling has prepared me for the emotional demands of nursing, where I’ll need to provide comfort and care to patients and families during their most vulnerable moments. As I prepare for the next chapter of my life, I carry with me the lessons that softball has taught me: that hard work pays off, that setbacks are setups for comebacks, and that individual success means nothing without lifting up those around you. These values will guide me whether I’m turning a double play or caring for a patient in need. My journey from that 7 year old with the oversized uniform has been marked by growth, challenges, and triumphs. Softball has not only shaped who I am today but has also illuminated the path toward who I want to become. A college athlete, a compassionate nurse, and a leader who uses the lessons learned between the baselines to make a positive impact in whatever field I choose to call home. As I look toward the future, I am grateful for every inning played, all of my coaches, my parents for believing in me, and every opportunity to grow. I am ready to take these lessons to the next level. The cost of college tuition, room, and board is beyond what my family can afford, making scholarship assistance essential for me to pursue higher education. Without financial aid, I would be unable to attend college and continue playing softball while studying to become a nurse.
Sandy’s Scholarship
Starting as a young child, I’ve developed not only my athletic skills on the diamond but also the discipline, teamwork, and resilience that define who I am today. As I look toward my college years, I’m excited to pursue two complementary passions. Playing college softball while earning my nursing degree.
My desire to become a nurse stems from a deep rooted passion for helping others that has guided me throughout my life. Growing up in a family where healthcare professionals surround me, I’ve witnessed firsthand the profound impact that compassionate care can have on patients and their families. Whether it was listening to my family members share stories of their most meaningful patient interactions or observing their dedication to healing others, I’ve been inspired by their commitment to service. This family influence, combined with my own natural inclination to support and care for others, has solidified my determination to enter the nursing profession.
Playing softball since childhood has taught me invaluable lessons that will serve me well in both athletics and healthcare. The sport has instilled in me the importance of quick decision making under pressure, effective communication with teammates, and the ability to maintain focus during high stress situations. These skills directly translate to the nursing environment, where split second decisions, clear communication with medical teams, and composure during emergencies are essential for providing quality patient care. My ultimate goal is to use the leadership qualities, work ethic, and team oriented mindset I’ve developed through softball to become a nurse who not only provides excellent clinical care but also serves as a source of strength and encouragement for patients during their most vulnerable moments. Just as I’ve learned to support my teammates through challenging games, I want to be the kind of nurse who helps patients and their families navigate difficult health journeys with compassion and expertise.
The combination of my family’s healthcare legacy, my lifelong commitment to softball, and my genuine desire to make a difference in people’s lives has shaped my vision for the future. I’m excited to embark on this journey where my athletic and academic pursuits will work together to prepare me for a meaningful career in nursing. Below is a picture of one of our events hosted by my mother & I. My grandfather is currently battling cancer & dementia. I help out as much as I can. I strongly believe my purpose in life is to become a nurse. I want to pursue my dreams. Having financial freedom is key to success. Thank you for your time.

I had always been the quiet one who went along with plans rather than making them. That night at the party, I discovered a strength I never knew I had.
When my friend grabbed their car keys and announced it was time to go, my heart raced. I could see they had been drinking heavily, but everyone else seemed oblivious. The thought of getting in that car terrified me, but speaking up seemed even scarier.
Then something shifted inside me. Standing in that room, watching my friend head toward the door, I realized my fear of seeming like a “buzzkill” was nothing compared to my fear of what could happen if I stayed silent. With trembling hands, I called my mother. “Mom, I need you to come pick us up.” When I announced my mom was coming, my friend got frustrated and others rolled their eyes. That night, I discovered something others hadn’t seen in me,
an unwavering moral compass and the courage to act on it. I learned that true strength isn’t about being the loudest voice, but about making the uncomfortable but necessary choice. This experience changed how I lead and serve others. I now speak up when I see unsafe situations or unfair treatment. I help others recognize their own moral courage by sharing my story and showing them that doing the right thing is always worth the temporary discomfort.
That night taught me that leadership isn’t about popularity, it’s about prioritizing what matters most, even when it’s difficult. Sometimes the crown we earn is simply knowing that when it mattered, we found the strength to do what was right. That moment was the most valuable experience in my life. Thank god I have an open relationship with my mom. My mother had to work that morning. She got out her bed to pick us up with no questions asked. For that I will always show gratitude.

Hello, my name is Makenzy, and I am a determined young woman with big dreams and an unwavering commitment to making a positive impact in the world. Growing up in a low income household while watching my father manage his disability has shaped me into someone who understands both the power of resilience and the importance of compassionate care. These experiences, combined with my passion for athletics and my family’s influence in healthcare, have led me to pursue two interconnected dreams, becoming a nurse and playing collegiate softball. My dream for my future career is to become a nurse who specializes in caring for patients and families facing serious illnesses, particularly cancer and chronic conditions. I want to be the nurse who not only provides excellent clinical care but also serves as a source of comfort, advocacy, and hope during patients most challenging moments. Having witnessed firsthand the difference that compassionate healthcare professionals made in my father’s journey, I am driven to provide that same level of care to others who find themselves in similar situations. I chose nursing because it represents the perfect intersection of my desire to help others, my interest in medical science, and my natural ability to connect with people during difficult times. This career path excites me because it offers endless opportunities for growth, learning, and meaningful impact. Every day as a nurse will present new challenges and the chance to make a real difference in someone’s life. The profession’s blend of technical expertise and human compassion appeals to my desire to use both my mind and my heart in my work. My long term goal is to not only provide direct patient care but also to advance to leadership roles where I can influence policies and practices that improve access to quality healthcare for underserved populations. Furthermore, I believe that by excelling as both a student athlete and future healthcare provider, I can serve as a role model for other young women who may think they have to choose between athletics and academics, or who believe that coming from a low income background limits their opportunities. I want to demonstrate that with determination, support, and hard work, it’s possible to pursue multiple passions while making a meaningful contribution to society. My dreams may seem ambitious, but my experiences have taught me that the biggest challenges often lead to the most rewarding outcomes. Through nursing and softball, I hope to inspire others, break down barriers, and create positive change that extends far beyond my individual achievements.
Women in Healthcare Scholarship
My decision to pursue a degree in healthcare, specifically nursing, stems from a combination of personal experiences, deep rooted compassion, and a recognition of the unique perspective I can bring as a woman to this vital field. Having witnessed my grandfather’s battle with cancer and disability while growing up in a low income household, I have seen both the incredible power of compassionate healthcare and the gaps that exist in our current system. These experiences have convinced me that healthcare is not just my calling it is where I can make the most meaningful difference in the world. I chose healthcare because it represents the perfect fusion of science, compassion, and service. Unlike many career paths that focus solely on profit or personal advancement, healthcare offers the opportunity to apply knowledge and skills directly to improving human lives. Every day in this field presents the chance to ease someone’s pain, provide comfort during frightening moments, or help families navigate some of the most challenging experiences they will ever face. This prospect of making a tangible, positive impact on others’ lives every single day is what drew me to healthcare and continues to fuel my passion for nursing. The influence of healthcare professionals during my father’s treatment showed me how critical excellent care can be, particularly during life altering medical crises. I witnessed nurses who went beyond their clinical duties to provide emotional support, advocate for our family’s needs, and help us understand complex medical information. These experiences taught me that healthcare is about treating the whole person, not just symptoms or conditions. I want to be the kind of healthcare professional who recognizes that healing involves addressing not only physical ailments but also the emotional, social, and economic factors that impact a patient’s well being. As a woman entering the healthcare field, I hope to make a positive impact by bringing the unique strengths and perspectives that women often contribute to patient care. Research consistently shows that women healthcare providers tend to spend more time with patients, engage in more patient centered communication, and take a more collaborative approach to treatment decisions. I plan to leverage these natural tendencies to create healing environments where patients feel heard, respected, and genuinely cared for. I am particularly passionate about using my position as a woman in healthcare to advocate for other women, especially those from backgrounds similar to mine. Women from low income families often face unique healthcare challenges, including barriers to accessing care, difficulty advocating for themselves in medical settings, and concerns about the cost of treatment. Having experienced these challenges firsthand through my family’s journey, I understand how important it is to have healthcare providers who truly understand these struggles and can serve as effective advocates.
Additionally, I hope to contribute to the mentorship and support of other women pursuing healthcare careers. The nursing profession has historically been dominated by women, yet leadership positions and specialized roles have not always reflected this demographic reality. I aspire to not only excel in my own career but also to support and encourage other women to pursue advanced roles, leadership positions, and specialized areas of practice within healthcare. Ultimately, I chose healthcare because I believe it offers the greatest opportunity to make a lasting, positive impact on individual lives and communities.

Success has always been more than just a dream for me, it has been a necessity born from witnessing my family’s struggles and recognizing that education is the key to breaking cycles of hardship. My inspiration to pursue nursing in college stems from a deep desire to achieve success not only for myself, but to honor the sacrifices my family has made and to create opportunities to give back to others facing similar challenges.
Growing up in a low income household with a disabled grandfather who battled cancer, I learned early that success requires both determination and a clear path forward. Watching my family navigate financial difficulties while managing serious health challenges showed me that success isn’t just about personal achievement it’s about gaining the knowledge, skills, and resources needed to make a meaningful impact in the world. This realization has pushed me to keep going even when obstacles seemed overwhelming. What continues to drive me forward is the understanding that nursing represents the perfect intersection of my desire for success and my passion for helping others. Through nursing, I can achieve financial stability and professional fulfillment while dedicating my career to caring for people during their most vulnerable moments. The healthcare professionals who helped my grandfather during his illness demonstrated that success in nursing means more than earning a degree, it means becoming someone who can provide hope, comfort, and life saving care to those who need it most. This scholarship would be instrumental in helping me reach these goals by removing financial barriers that could otherwise limit my ability to focus fully on my studies. Coming from a low income background, the cost of college represents a significant challenge for my family. This scholarship would allow me to dedicate more time to my coursework, clinical experiences, and studying rather than working multiple jobs to pay for my education. It would also reduce the financial stress on my family, allowing me to pursue my education without adding to their existing burdens.
Charles Bowlus Memorial Scholarship
Growing up in a low-income household while watching my grandfather battle cancer and my father being disabled this has profoundly shaped not only who I am as a person, but also my unwavering determination to pursue a career in nursing. These experiences have given me a unique perspective on the healthcare system, the challenges faced by vulnerable populations, and the critical importance of compassionate, accessible care.
When my grandfather was diagnosed with cancer, our family was thrust into a world of medical appointments, treatments, and uncertainty. As a low-income family, we faced barriers that many take for granted transportation to appointments, time off work, and the financial burden of medical care. I witnessed firsthand how these obstacles can complicate an already difficult journey. More importantly, I observed how certain healthcare professionals went above and beyond to help our family navigate these challenges, while others seemed less understanding of our circumstances. Living with my father’s disability has also opened my eyes to the ongoing challenges faced by individuals with long term health conditions. I’ve seen how disability can impact not just the individual, but the entire family structure. The daily reality of managing care, advocating for needs, and navigating systems that aren’t always designed with accessibility in mind has given me insights that will make me a more effective and empathetic nurse. Coming from a low income background has taught me the value of resourcefulness, perseverance, and the importance of not giving up despite obstacles. These experiences have also made me acutely aware of health disparities and how socioeconomic factors can impact access to quality care. I understand what it feels like to worry about the cost of medical care, to feel intimidated in healthcare settings, and to need someone who truly understands your situation. These personal experiences have solidified my commitment to becoming a nurse who serves underserved populations. I want to be the healthcare professional who recognizes when a family is struggling with more than just medical issues who understands that poverty, disability, and illness often intersect in complex ways. My goal is to provide the kind of compassionate, comprehensive care that my father received from his best nurses, while also advocating for systemic changes that make healthcare more accessible and equitable. Through these experiences, I have learned that some of life’s greatest challenges can become sources of strength and purpose. My family’s struggles have not defined limitations for me; instead, they have illuminated the path toward a career where I can make a meaningful difference in the lives of others facing similar challenges.

From the earliest age, I learned that true strength lies not in what we accomplish for ourselves, but in how we lift others along our journey. Through my unwavering dedication to my family, active involvement in community initiatives, and
leadership among my teammates, I have discovered that service is not just an obligation, it’s a privilege that has shaped who I am and who I aspire to become. My commitment to helping began at home, where I learned that family support requires both sacrifice and dedication. As the oldest child in my family, I have taken on significant responsibilities that extend far beyond typical household chores. Additionally, my work with youth softball programs has allowed me to give back to the sport that has given me so much. As a volunteer coach and mentor for elementary age children, I have taught fundamental skills while emphasizing sportsmanship, teamwork, and perseverance. Watching young athletes develop confidence and discover their potential has been incredibly rewarding and has reinforced my belief in the power of positive mentorship. Through my experiences serving my family, community, and teammates, I have learned that these areas of service are deeply interconnected. The patience and responsibility I developed while helping my family prepared me to mentor younger athletes. Through my experiences serving my family, community, and teammates, I have learned that these areas of service are deeply interconnected. The patience and responsibility I developed while helping my family prepared me to mentor younger athletes. The teamwork and leadership skills I honed on the softball field equipped me to organize effective community service projects. The compassion and advocacy I practiced in community service strengthened my ability to support teammates during difficult times. The foundation of service I have built through my dedication to family, community, and teammates will continue to guide my decisions and shape my character throughout my life. I am grateful for the opportunities I have had to serve others and look forward to expanding my impact as I grow personally and professionally. These experiences have taught me that service is both a responsibility and a privilege. It requires sacrifice, consistency, and genuine care, but it provides immeasurable rewards in terms of personal growth, meaningful relationships, and the satisfaction of contributing to something larger than oneself. As I continue my educational journey and prepare for my future career, I carry with me the lessons learned through service and the commitment to continue putting others’ needs alongside my own.
