This friend, a vibrant presence in my life, brought joy, laughter, and inspiration. Her sudden departure at the age of 21 plunged me into a whirlwind of shock, disbelief, and overwhelming grief. It felt as though a part of me had been torn away, leaving behind an irreplaceable void. The pain of her absence pervaded every facet of my existence, shattering my sense of security and forever altering the trajectory of my journey. In the aftermath of her death, I grappled with an avalanche of emotions. Guilt gnawed at me as I searched for signs I might have overlooked, replaying our final interactions in a desperate bid to make sense of the inexplicable. Yet amidst the turmoil, I found solace in the embrace of my community. Friends and family became pillars of support, offering words of comfort, shoulders to lean on, and unwavering companionship. Sara Chaiton Scholarship for Resilient Women
Losing someone close to us can be an incredibly profound experience that shapes who we are and how we navigate the world. In my case, the person I lost was not only a friend but also a catalyst for a significant shift in my life path. Their departure, coupled with the values instilled in me through my Jewish upbringing, ultimately guided me toward a career in clinical psychology, driven by a deep commitment to preventing others from facing similar fates. Growing up in a Jewish household, I was taught the principle of tikkun olam, which translates to "repairing the world." This concept emphasizes the importance of social justice, compassion, and making a positive impact on the lives of others. From a young age, I internalized this value and felt a sense of responsibility to contribute to the betterment of society. Initially, my goal was to become a medical doctor to fulfill my grandfather’s dream, which he was denied due to discrimination. Despite his qualifications, he was rejected from medical school solely because he was Jewish. His story served as a stark example of the injustices that exist in the world and fueled my determination to break barriers in the field of healthcare. I was determined to honor his legacy by pursuing a career where I could advocate for equality and provide care to those in need, regardless of background or circumstance. However, my journey took an unexpected turn when I experienced the devastating loss of a close friend to suicide. At just 21 years old, she took her life due to painful experiences associated with her diagnosis of borderline personality disorder. She left behind a shattered community of loved ones—including me. I felt helpless and disappointed that I did not know how to help her when she most needed it. Her passing forced me to confront the harsh reality of mental illness and the stigma that often surrounds it. In the wake of this tragedy, I found myself at a crossroads, grappling with grief and searching for meaning in the face of such profound loss. It was during this tumultuous period that I discovered my calling in clinical psychology. Witnessing firsthand the devastating impact of untreated mental illness, I was compelled to dedicate my life to helping others navigate their own struggles and find healing and hope in the face of adversity. My friend's death taught me of the fragility of life and the urgent need for accessible and compassionate mental health care. It also ignited my passion to be a changemaker in this area. Guided by the values of tikkun olam and my Jewish upbringing, I embarked on a new path, determined to make a difference in the lives of those battling mental illness. I know that my grandfather, had he been in my position, would do the same. In pursuing a doctorate in clinical psychology, I am committed to honoring my friend's memory by providing empathetic and culturally competent care to individuals and communities in need. Through advocacy, research, and clinical practice, I strive to dismantle the barriers that prevent individuals from accessing quality mental health care and to create a world where no one suffers in silence. My friend's death transformed my trajectory, guiding me toward a career path defined by empathy, advocacy, and a relentless commitment to healing. Her memory propels me forward on a journey fueled by compassion and a steadfast belief in the power of human connection to overcome even the darkest of moments. I am proud that my Jewish family values have guided me in pursuing a meaningful life and career.

Growing up in a family with Ukrainian Jewish roots has profoundly shaped my journey towards becoming a psychologist. My heritage is not merely a part of my identity; it is the cornerstone of my motivation, influencing my career aspirations, values, and desire to create positive change in the world. My family's history is etched with stories of resilience and perseverance in the face of adversity. We are descendants of immigrants who fled Ukraine during the pogroms, seeking refuge and opportunity in the United States. Their decision to leave behind everything they knew, including their homeland and loved ones, reflects the profound impact of persecution and discrimination on their lives. One poignant tale from my family's past involves my grandfather's dream of becoming a doctor. Despite his passion and determination, he was denied entry to medical school simply because he was Jewish. This unjust barrier shattered his aspirations and highlighted the pervasive discrimination faced by the Jewish community in Ukraine. The hardships my family endured did not end with immigration; they persisted in our new home. Antisemitism and socioeconomic challenges cast a shadow over our daily lives, shaping our experiences and opportunities. As a result, my family faced economic hardships, struggling to make ends meet and provide for our basic needs. Witnessing my parents navigate these difficulties with grace and resilience instilled in me a deep sense of determination and resilience. These experiences have fueled my passion for psychology and my commitment to creating a better future for myself and those around me. I am driven by a desire to understand the complexities of human behavior, particularly in the context of adversity and trauma. My heritage serves as a constant reminder of the importance of empathy, compassion, and social justice in my work. Moreover, my family's journey has imbued me with a strong sense of responsibility to uplift and support others, particularly those who have faced similar challenges. I am acutely aware of the profound impact that access to mental health resources can have on individuals and communities, especially those from marginalized backgrounds. My goal is to leverage my education and training in psychology to break down barriers to mental health care and empower individuals to overcome adversity and thrive. As I embark on my doctoral journey in psychology, I am guided by the lessons of my heritage and the values instilled in me by my family. I am driven not only by personal ambition but also by a deep-seated commitment to social justice and equity. Sean Carroll's Mindscape Big Picture Scholarship
As a doctoral student immersed in the multifaceted world of clinical psychology, my journey is intertwined with the relentless pursuit of understanding the human mind and behavior. Yet, amidst the intricate tapestry of psychological complexities, I firmly believe that comprehending the nature of our universe holds paramount importance. The exploration of the cosmos not only expands the horizons of human knowledge but also offers profound insights that can enrich our understanding of the human experience. At the core of this pursuit lies the recognition that our existence is not confined solely to the realms of psychology or the human psyche. Instead, we are interconnected with the vast and enigmatic universe that envelops us. The intricate dance of celestial bodies, the laws of physics governing the cosmos, and the unfathomable mysteries that lie beyond our comprehension beckon us to delve deeper into the nature of our existence. The symbiotic relationship between cosmic exploration and psychology is profound. Understanding the universe's intricacies inherently involves embracing curiosity, critical thinking, and a relentless pursuit of knowledge—attributes that parallel the essence of scientific inquiry in psychology. Moreover, the cosmic landscape serves as an allegory, fostering humility and awe that resonate deeply within the human psyche, offering perspective and nurturing a sense of interconnectedness with the cosmos. One crucial concept I aspire to employ in this exploration is the interdisciplinary approach. As a doctoral student in clinical psychology, I recognize the value of interdisciplinary collaboration in unraveling the mysteries of the universe. The integration of diverse perspectives from fields such as astrophysics, cosmology, neuroscience, and psychology offers a holistic understanding that transcends disciplinary boundaries. Moreover, psychological concepts, such as cognitive flexibility, curiosity, and open-mindedness, are invaluable in navigating the complexities of cosmic exploration. The ability to entertain diverse ideas, challenge preconceptions, and remain open to novel paradigms mirrors the essence of psychological flexibility, facilitating a more nuanced understanding of the cosmos. Furthermore, the lens of psychology can contribute significantly to our comprehension of the universe. The exploration of cosmic phenomena often involves deciphering complex data, understanding patterns, and discerning underlying principles—a cognitive process akin to problem-solving and pattern recognition in psychology. Applying psychological methodologies, such as qualitative analysis, cognitive modeling, and experimental design, can offer innovative approaches in unraveling cosmic mysteries. Additionally, the integration of psychology in space exploration ventures is pivotal. The psychological implications of extended space missions, isolation, and the psychological well-being of astronauts are critical considerations in interstellar travel. Drawing from my background in clinical psychology, I aim to contribute to research addressing these challenges, focusing on developing interventions and strategies that safeguard the mental health and well-being of space travelers. Moreover, the endeavor to understand the universe serves as an inspirational force, fostering curiosity and instilling a sense of wonder that transcends academic pursuits. As a doctoral student, I strive to instill these values within the next generation of psychologists, encouraging them to embrace curiosity, explore interdisciplinary connections, and perceive the universe as an endless canvas for intellectual exploration. Cat Zingano Overcoming Loss Scholarship
Life has this incredible way of throwing unexpected curveballs that change the course of our lives forever. My own journey into the world of clinical psychology and my pursuit of a PsyD degree are closely intertwined with the heart-wrenching loss of my dear friend Ally. It was during my junior year in college when her sudden departure through suicide shook me to the core and kickstarted a fierce determination within me – a determination to make a positive impact in the realm of mental health. Ally wasn't just a friend; she was someone who laughed, cried, and dreamed alongside me. Her absence left a void that I couldn't fathom. The pain of losing her was profound, and it was accompanied by a sense of guilt and questions about what more could have been done. But amidst the grief, a fire was ignited within me – a fire to understand the intricacies of mental health struggles and to prevent others from experiencing the same pain Ally did. Driven by Ally's memory, I dove headfirst into psychology courses, eager to unravel the complexities of human behavior and emotions. I wanted to learn as much as I could, not just for myself but for the countless others who might be silently battling their own demons. This commitment led me to volunteer at local mental health organizations and crisis hotlines, further solidifying my resolve to create change. Opting for a PsyD degree wasn't just a decision; it was a heartfelt commitment. It represented my determination to turn my grief into purpose and to honor Ally's memory by making a tangible impact. The program wasn't just about education; it was about equipping myself with the knowledge and skills needed to make a real difference in the lives of individuals struggling with mental health challenges. Throughout my academic journey, I've been fervently engaged in advocating for increased access to mental health services and battling the stigma surrounding mental health. Ally's story, tragic as it was, has become a catalyst for my determination to make a difference on these fronts. Through research, I aim to uncover the barriers that prevent individuals from seeking help and contribute to the development of strategies to address these challenges. It's my hope that this research will not only expand the reach of mental health services but also lessen the stigma that often keeps people from seeking the support they need. Ally's passing has given me a unique perspective – one that reminds me to approach every client with empathy and understanding. When I sit across from someone seeking help, I'm not just a clinician; I'm someone who comprehends the weight of their struggles on a personal level. This connection pushes me to go beyond the textbooks and theories, to truly connect with the person in front of me. In the end, the pain of losing Ally has transformed into a fierce determination to make a difference. Her memory guides me as I tread the path toward my PsyD degree, igniting a sense of purpose that propels me forward. Through advocacy, research, and my personal journey, I hope to honor her memory and ensure that others don't have to endure the same pain she did. Eras Tour Farewell Fan Scholarship
Music has the remarkable ability to transcend boundaries and touch our hearts in profound ways. It often serves as a mirror that reflects our inner thoughts and emotions, allowing us to explore facets of ourselves that might have remained hidden. For many, Taylor Swift's music has been a journey of self-discovery, offering insights into personal growth, identity, and empowerment. Attending the Eras tour was a turning point in my relationship with Swift's music, leading me to confront my preconceived notions and internalized misogyny. This experience not only shifted my perspective on her artistry but also helped me embrace and celebrate my own femininity. Before delving into my transformative experience, it's important to acknowledge the role that internalized misogyny can play in shaping our perceptions. As a music enthusiast, I had dismissed Taylor Swift's music without truly understanding why. It wasn't until I began reflecting on my biases that I realized how deeply ingrained these prejudices were. Internalized misogyny often manifests as a tendency to judge women, their interests, and their expressions more critically. This realization prompted me to reevaluate my attitude towards Swift's music, paving the way for a paradigm shift. Taylor Swift's discography is a tapestry woven with the threads of vulnerability, strength, heartbreak, and empowerment. As I started to truly listen to her lyrics, I discovered the rich layers of her storytelling. Swift's ability to channel her emotions into relatable narratives shattered the stereotypes that I had ignorantly assigned to her music. Songs like "Blank Space" and "The Man" not only displayed her versatility but also challenged societal perceptions of women as emotionally volatile or domineering. Attending the Eras tour was a pivotal moment that dismantled the walls I had built around my previous judgments. The elaborate stage production, the camaraderie among fans, and Swift's charismatic performances were a testament to her impact on people's lives. Witnessing the diversity of her fanbase, it became evident that her music resonated with people from all walks of life, transcending age, gender, and background. The concert's inclusive atmosphere and the empowering messages Swift shared on stage compelled me to reconsider my biases. As I began to recognize and address my internalized misogyny, I found myself embracing my own femininity in new and empowering ways. Swift's music celebrates vulnerability, emotional depth, and authenticity, which are qualities that should be embraced by everyone, regardless of gender. By shedding my preconceptions, I opened myself up to the possibility of understanding and celebrating femininity in all its forms. The Eras tour served as a catalyst for this transformation, inspiring me to embrace my own journey of self-discovery and empowerment. In retrospect, my journey from rejecting Taylor Swift's music due to internalized misogyny to embracing and feeling empowered by my own femininity has been transformative. The power of music, especially when wielded by an artist like Taylor Swift, lies in its ability to challenge our perceptions, spark self-reflection, and catalyze personal growth. Attending the Eras tour allowed me to break free from the confines of preconceived notions, leading me to a place of self-acceptance and empowerment. Just as Swift's music resonates with millions, my experience is a testament to the profound impact that art can have on our lives when we approach it with an open heart and a willingness to learn.

Losing my best friend, Ally, during my undergraduate college years was a devastating and life-altering experience that shaped the trajectory of my life. As a Jewish woman, my identity and faith played a crucial role in navigating this profound loss. Ally's death by suicide due to her borderline personality disorder broke my heart and compelled me to reevaluate my path. I found my passion for mental health advocacy and ultimately chose to pursue a career as a psychologist to honor Ally's memory and help others like her. Ally was my best friend, my confidante, my partner in laughter and tears, and a mentor. We met because she was my "big sister" in my sorority, and I looked up to her as if she was my real big sister. While coping with her own mental health struggles, she still made time to support me. After losing her, I felt guilt, grief, and profound sadness. In the aftermath of Ally's passing, I faced a crisis of purpose. Our dreams of attending medical school together were no longer a reality. The fear of entering a demanding profession, with the potential to lose touch with the emotional connections that had mattered so deeply to both of us, weighed heavily on my heart. It was a time of deep reflection and introspection. Ultimately, I decided not to pursue medical school. I took time after school to reflect and identify a path that felt meaningful and authentic. Taking a break after graduating from college allowed me the space I needed to process my grief, find inner strength, and change my life course. During this period, I immersed myself in literature, seeking answers about mental health, resilience, and healing. My Jewish faith, a source of strength and guidance throughout my life, played a significant role in my healing process. Embracing Jewish values of compassion, empathy, and social justice, I discovered the importance of tikkun olam (repairing the world). This concept fueled my determination to contribute positively to the lives of others and serve those in need. I realized that my experiences with Ally had given me a unique perspective and understanding of mental health struggles. I discovered the opportunity to honor Ally's memory by pursuing a career in mental health, ensuring that others could receive better support and have better outcomes. The journey toward becoming a psychologist has been an exploration of both academic and personal growth. Pursuing a doctorate in Clinical Psychology has given me the tools and knowledge to address mental health concerns comprehensively. Additionally, engaging in counseling and therapy sessions myself has enabled me to process my grief and develop self-awareness—an essential aspect of effective therapeutic work. Each step I take towards becoming a psychologist is a tribute to the friend I lost too soon. In conclusion, losing my best friend, Ally, to suicide during my undergraduate years was a heartbreaking and profoundly transformative experience that reshaped my identity and life course. Michael Rudometkin Memorial Scholarship
As a current PsyD doctoral student studying clinical psychology, my journey toward embodying selflessness has been deeply intertwined with my commitment to providing cost-free therapy to the marginalized population residing on Skid Row in Los Angeles. This underserved community comprises individuals with histories of substance use and severe mental illness, and it is within their stories of resilience and strength that I find purpose and inspiration. Embodying selflessness in my work means recognizing every person I encounter's intrinsic worth and humanity. Each day at the shelter, I approach my clients with empathy and without judgment, acknowledging the profound challenges they face. By offering a listening ear and a compassionate heart, I create a safe space for them to share their struggles and victories. I embody selflessness by dedicating my time and expertise to those often overlooked and underserved by society. Despite the rigorous demands of my academic pursuits, I prioritize spending numerous hours at the shelter each week, fully immersing myself in the lives of my clients. My presence becomes a constant source of support as they navigate the complexities of recovery and mental health management. Beyond providing therapy, I also advocate for my clients' needs and collaborate with other professionals to ensure they receive comprehensive care. On one occasion, I worked tirelessly to connect a client of mine to a specialized treatment facility for substance abuse. My client had struggled with addiction for most of his life and had been previously denied access to appropriate resources. Understanding the urgency of his situation, I contacted several facilities, coordinated transportation, and advocated for his admission. Witnessing his transformation from despair to hope as he took his first steps toward recovery affirmed the value of selflessness in empowering positive change. Moreover, embodying selflessness involves recognizing the interconnectedness of mental health and socioeconomic disparities. It means challenging the systemic barriers that perpetuate homelessness and substance abuse. To address this, I initiated workshops at the shelter, focusing on coping skills, relapse prevention, and trauma-informed care. These workshops empower my clients with tools to navigate life's challenges, promoting a sense of autonomy and self-efficacy. In addition to my work at the shelter, I engage in community outreach initiatives to raise awareness about mental health, addiction, and homelessness. By facilitating educational seminars at local schools and community centers, I strive to destigmatize mental health issues and encourage early intervention. These efforts expand the reach of selflessness beyond the shelter's walls and foster a more empathetic and supportive society. Embodying selflessness also involves acknowledging that healing extends beyond the individual; it encompasses families and communities. One memorable example is when I organized a support group for family members of individuals with mental illness and addiction. This group served as a forum for open dialogue, allowing them to share their experiences and learn from each other's journeys. Witnessing the families come together to support one another highlighted the transformative power of collective empathy and solidarity. In conclusion, my experience as a PsyD doctoral student providing cost-free therapy at a homeless shelter on Skid Row has taught me the profound significance of embodying selflessness. It is not a singular act but a continuous commitment to understanding, supporting, and advocating for those in need. I strive to create a more compassionate and inclusive world for my clients and their communities through my dedication to listening, supporting, educating, and empowering. This requires that I use my time, energy, and resources selflessly. In doing so, I derive a great sense of fulfillment and joy, while aspiring to make a difference in others' lives.

"The Last Lecture" prompted me to change course and pursue a life that is in harmony with my deepest aspirations. Resilience and determination are recurring themes in the book that resonated with me. Despite his terminal illness, Pausch exemplifies an unwavering spirit and an unyielding commitment to his dreams. His story t instilled in me the courage to confront my own obstacles with unwavering determination and view challenges as exciting opportunities for growth and personal transformation. Pausch's journey served as a powerful reminder that setbacks do not define us; rather, it is our response to them that matters most. "The Last Lecture" also underscored the profound impact of relationships in our lives. Pausch’s stories of the people who have influenced his journey and the valuable lessons he learned from them caused me to reflect on the immense value of genuine connections and fulfilling relationships. It motivated me to invest time and effort in creating meaningful experiences with loved ones, friends, and mentors. Moreover, the book emphasized the importance of gratitude and finding joy in everyday moments. "The Last Lecture" inspired me to never take things and people for granted. By focusing on gratitude, I discovered a deeper sense of contentment, fulfillment, and purpose in my daily life. In conclusion, "The Last Lecture" has had a profound impact on my life, and I believe it has something valuable to offer to everyone. This book imparts insights that can guide individuals towards a more meaningful existence. It challenges us to assess our values, confront challenges with resilience, and cultivate connections that bring joy and fulfillment. I wholeheartedly recommend this book to every person seeking personal growth and a greater sense of purpose in their lives.
    Taylor Swift ‘1989’ Fan Scholarship
Among the captivating tracks on Taylor Swift's album 1989, "I Know Places" stands out as my personal favorite. This song resonates with me on multiple levels, from its enchanting melodies to its thought-provoking lyrics. As I delve into the reasons why "I Know Places" holds a special place in my heart, its themes of escapism, resilience, and the power of love come to the forefront. One aspect that immediately captures my attention is the hauntingly beautiful melody of "I Know Places." The ethereal synthesizers and atmospheric soundscape create an otherworldly ambiance that transports me into a realm of both vulnerability and strength. The song's gentle yet persistent beat, coupled with Taylor Swift's emotive vocals, elicits a range of emotions within me. It's a perfect sonic backdrop that mirrors the contrasting themes explored in the song's lyrics. Lyrically, "I Know Places" delves into the idea of seeking refuge from the pressures of the outside world. It speaks to the human desire to find solace and protection amidst chaos and judgment. This theme particularly resonates with me as I often find myself yearning for moments of respite in an ever-demanding and judgmental society. The lyrics paint vivid imagery of hiding away with a loved one, finding solace in the knowledge that together, they can elude the prying eyes and judgment of the world. This notion of creating a safe haven where love can flourish in the face of adversity strikes a chord within me, as it speaks to the power of love and connection to shield us from the hardships of life. Moreover, "I Know Places" serves as a reminder of the resilience and determination that lie within each of us. The lyrics evoke a sense of rebellion against the forces that seek to control and confine us. It reminds us that, despite the challenges we face, we can find strength within ourselves to defy expectations and forge our own paths. This message resonates deeply with me as I navigate the ups and downs of life. The song serves as a source of inspiration, urging me to embrace my own inner strength and to believe in my ability to overcome obstacles and break free from societal constraints. Another reason why "I Know Places" holds a special place in my heart is the way it captures the bittersweet beauty of vulnerability. The lyrics acknowledge the risks and uncertainties that come with opening ourselves up to love and connection. They speak to the fear of being discovered, of having our vulnerabilities exposed, and yet, they also celebrate the courage it takes to be vulnerable and to love fiercely in spite of those risks. This resonates with me on a deeply personal level, as I have experienced the transformative power of vulnerability in my own relationships. The song serves as a reminder to embrace vulnerability and to have faith in the resilience of love. In conclusion, "I Know Places" is my favorite song on Taylor Swift's album 1989 due to its mesmerizing melodies, its exploration of themes such as escapism, resilience, and the power of love, and its ability to evoke a range of emotions within me. This song's enchanting soundscapes and thought-provoking lyrics provide me with a sense of solace, inspiration, and a reminder of the beauty that lies within vulnerability. Whether I'm seeking refuge from the pressures of the world or drawing strength from my own resilience, "I Know Places" continues to resonate with me, making it an enduring favorite that I find myself returning to time and time again.
    Ethan To Scholarship
I chose a career in mental health because of both my personal experiences, and due to a deep sense commitment to making a positive impact in the field and broader society. As the first person in my family to pursue a graduate degree and a career in mental health, I carry a legacy of overcoming obstacles and challenging systemic biases. My grandfather was denied admission to medical school due to anti-Semitic admissions policies, and it is my goal to carry out his dream of becoming a doctor. These personal and cultural factors have instilled in me a sense of responsibility to support individuals in their mental health journeys, and to use my knowledge and platform to advocate for people who often go unheard or dismissed. Within my family, mental health conditions have had significant impacts. I have witnessed the struggles and challenges that impact those experiencing mental illness, and the impact it has on their loved ones. My brother’s journey of recovery from addiction has provided me with firsthand insight into the complexities of addiction, mental health, and the vital role that support plays in the recovery process. In order to become the best source of support I can, I have pursued academic and professional experiences where I can learn to provide therapeutic support, empower others, and amplify their voices. As a HelpLine volunteer for the National Alliance on Mental Illness, I had the opportunity to provide support, resources, and information to individuals and families affected by mental health conditions. This experience deepened my understanding of the importance of empathy, active listening, and connecting individuals with appropriate resources during their time of need. There were instances where I could provide people with life-changing resources, and there were instances where the most I could do was offer nonjudgmental emotional support. Both were invaluable experiences. I further developed these therapeutic skills in my experience as student psychologist. I have had the privilege of supporting unhoused individuals with substance abuse disorders and serious mental illness. This population faces a myriad of unique challenges, including access to mental health and other services, and societal and systemic biases and stigma. I have witnessed both the power of therapeutic support in promoting healing, resilience, and self-advocacy, which has reinforced my passion for providing compassionate care to underserved populations, and using my expertise and platform to advocate for equitable mental health services for all. As I continue on this career path, I have multi-faceted goals. I aim to reduce stigma surrounding serious mental health conditions by sharing information to increase awareness and empathy as a future professor and supervisor, support people in their mental health journeys as a culturally-responsive therapist, and facilitate access to resources by being knowledgeable about what resources exist and creating resources that do not yet exist. For example, I host regular, free mental health workshops at a shelter on Skid Row in Los Angeles. Furthermore, I am committed to my own growth as a clinician. I aim to effortfully keep up with advances in research and best practices so that I provide the best, most personalized care possible to my clients. Finally, through my research, I hope to contribute to the broader field of psychology and improve treatment outcomes for people with mental health conditions. In summary, my choice to pursue a career in mental health is rooted in personal experiences, cultural heritage, and a deep commitment to making a positive impact. In pursuit of living my grandfather’s dream of becoming a doctor, I hope to support my clients, loved ones, and broader community through therapeutic support, advocacy, and research.
So You Want to Be a Mental Health Professional Scholarship
As a college student interested in mental health, I am determined to use my experience and training as a doctoral student in psychology to effect change within myself, my clients, and my community. While completing my PsyD, I have chosen to engage in clinical training at community clinics, with a particular focus on serving unhoused individuals with dual diagnoses, including serious mental illness and addiction. My current placement at the Union Rescue Mission on Skid Row in Los Angeles has enriched my understanding of the immense challenges faced by this population. Through my work, I aspire to make a positive impact not only on my clients but also on the broader community at the Union Rescue Mission. my academic community at Pepperdine University, and within my social circles. One crucial aspect of creating a positive impact is recognizing the interconnections between mental health, homelessness, and addiction. By understanding the complex factors contributing to these issues, I can provide more comprehensive and effective support to my clients. This understanding extends beyond the therapy office and into the broader community. I believe that by sharing my experiences and knowledge, I can help raise awareness and reduce the stigma surrounding mental illness and homelessness within my academic community. Moreover, I am passionate about advocating for the individuals whose voices are often dismissed or unheard. I recognize the importance of challenging societal systems and attitudes that perpetuate the marginalization of unhoused individuals with mental health challenges. To this end, I aim to engage in advocacy efforts both within and beyond the confines of my clinical work. By collaborating with local organizations, policymakers, and fellow students, I can amplify the voices of those affected and advocate for policies and resources that address the underlying issues contributing to homelessness and mental health disparities. In addition to direct advocacy, I believe in the power of education and knowledge dissemination. As a student, I have access to various platforms and opportunities to educate others about mental health, addiction, and homelessness. I intend to utilize these resources to conduct workshops, presentations, and research that challenge misconceptions and promote empathy and understanding. By sharing stories and shedding light on the realities faced by unhoused individuals, I hope to foster compassion and inspire action within my academic community and beyond. Furthermore, creating a positive impact necessitates ongoing self-reflection and personal growth. As a mental health professional, I recognize the importance of my own well-being and self-care. By prioritizing my mental health and engaging in regular supervision, therapy, and self-reflection, I can ensure that I am providing the best possible care for my clients. Additionally, I plan to continue my professional development by attending conferences, workshops, and training sessions that focus on innovative approaches to mental health, trauma-informed care, and harm reduction strategies. By continually expanding my knowledge and skills, I can adapt to the evolving needs of the unhoused population and become a better resource for my clients. In conclusion, as a student studying clinical psychology, I have the opportunity to use my training to positively impact my clients and my community beyond the therapy room. Through my clinical training at community clinics, specifically working with unhoused individuals on Skid Row, I aim to effect change within my clients, the Union Rescue Mission, and my academic community at Pepperdine University. By advocating for policy changes, sharing knowledge, and fostering empathy, understanding, and collaboration, I hope to contribute to the reduction of stigma, improvement of resources, and overall well-being of unhoused individuals with mental health challenges.
    Climate Conservation Scholarship
When reflecting on the massive scale of climate change, it can be easy to feel defeated—what can I do to really make a difference? However, if I can commit to making changes on a personal scale, that may encourage one other person to adopt these changes. This snowball effect can continue until there is significant change, both via the impact of personal lifestyle changes and via advocacy for larger-scale changes in policy and funding. My daily choices, while seemingly small, are empowering. The question transforms from, “What can I really do?” to “What is all that I can do?” From the food I ingest to the clothing I choose to buy and wear, each decision I make is made mindful of the health and well-being of our planet. I seek to live sustainably and make choices that minimize my environmental impact, while still meeting my basic needs. For example, I have learned to “up-cycle” used clothing to avoid being wasteful, while still enjoying the excitement of self-expression with fashion. When I can’t make certain types of clothing, I have a directory of sustainable brands and materials that I reference so that my consumption is minimally harmful. Additionally, I’m aware that one of my greatest sources of power and influence is my dollar. Where I spend my money matters. Although my purchasing power can’t change the way manufacturing and business is done globally or immediately, I hope that the smaller, more sustainable businesses that I support will do well over time, especially as others awake to the importance of their consumption decisions and as policy becomes more environmentally-friendly. In a capitalistic society, my spending is a way to use my voice. Each dollar is like a vote, and I continuously try to vote for companies and organizations that source sustainable materials and minimize their environmental impacts. I’m not only mindful of my consumerism related to clothes and goods, but also of what foods and beverages I consume. Eating a diet heavily composed of meat, dairy, and processed foods contributes to climate change, depletes natural resources, and harms biodiversity. I choose to shop at farmer’s markets and grow my own food when I can. I also aim to reduce food waste by regrowing vegetables, composting, avoiding foods packaged unsustainably, and making use of food scraps. When I invite others over for a dinner party, I ensure that I show them these small habits. Many of my friends have adopted them over time. Transportation is an additional major contributor to environmental degradation. I try to walk, bike, and take public transportation wherever possible. Additionally, when voting, I look to support candidates and policies that focus on the improvement in quality and accessibility of public transportation so that this resource can be more heavily utilized by others in the future. It's easy to be discouraged about climate change and think about all that one person cannot do. However, feeling defeated is not useful in fighting for the wellbeing of our planet. Empowerment through individual action and advocacy is useful, so that is how I choose to spend my energy. To complement my personal sustainable habits, I work to stay informed about policy, research, and current issues related to climate change. I seek to weave this information into conversation and interactions with others as much as possible so that they, too, may adopt a more sustainable lifestyle. The health of our climate is reliant on our action—on both individual and systemic levels.
    Bold Financial Freedom Scholarship
The best piece of advice I received was related to a study that was later disproven. However, while the results of the study are no longer accurate, the sentiment stuck with me and has greatly effected my perspective on finances and my relationship with money. In 2010, a research economist determined that people's happiness, defined as emotional well-being, plateaued after earning $75,000 per year. Now, it's understood that there are several limitations to this study. First, inflation, region, and various other economic factors effect the actual value of $75,000. Additionally, emotional well-being is only one facet of happiness. Happiness is multidimensional and highly subjective; each person defines it differently. When my father first told me about this research, and both of us understood it to be correct, he said to me, "All you really need is enough money to take care of your basic needs, plus a little to invest so you can retire later in life. After that baseline amount, the real wealth is in learning how not to commodify happiness." I had grown up in a wealthy suburb in California and my family was markedly poorer than the families of my friends. By ten years old, my primary motivation in school was to do well so I could get a high paying job and own a boat and vacation house like my friends' families. I thought this would make me happy. When my dad shared this sentiment with me, it caused me to reevaluate what I thought happiness meant, and how money related to happiness. I now know that my happiness does not depend on exorbitant amounts of money. As long as I have enough to keep myself safe and healthy and to invest a little for retirement, I can be happy--even without a boat or vacation home.
    Bold Mental Health Awareness Scholarship
We internalize the messages we take in from the world around us--the messages that are blatant, such as those on advertisements, and those that are more subtle, such as the stories told to us in our favorite movies and TV shows. What we witness others encounter helps us to form our own ideas about what is "normal" and what is not. As a teenager struggling with my own mental health, I remember watching movies and reading books where characters were portrayed as crazy, undesirable, or shameful because they dealt with mental health issues. I felt embarrassed on their behalf and refused to identify with them because they were woven into the main characters' lives as people to pity or avoid, or their conditions were glamorized and inaccurately represented. If I had seen characters with whom I shared my mental health struggles who were truthfully portrayed, lifted up and supported by the characters in their world, and who learned to cope effectively, I might have been inspired rather than dismayed. Increasing realistic representation of people with mental health conditions in the media is one method for helping people who struggle. They can develop more flexible senses of "normalcy" and increase empathy for themselves by empathizing with the people they identify with in books, movies, and TV. Additionally, if creators incorporate real methods of help and support for their characters, consumers may learn about what is available to them, too. By seeing people with whom we share something in common in the media we consume, we feel less alone. We can learn vicariously through their experiences. Advocating for better and more frequent representation of people with mental health conditions in the media can make a powerful impact on people struggling with their own mental health.
A Dog Changed My Life Scholarship
It's so special that we can look into our dog's eyes and feel human-like senses of recognition and connection. They're important family members who make us laugh, comfort us, and help us feel less lonely. My family has had two dogs, each of which have made truly lasting impressions on me. They've changed my life and my family's dynamics for the better. My family's first dog was named Bella. My dad only let us get her because she was the cheapest dog in the newspaper and I had been begging for years. She quickly became an integral part of our family. She sat on the deck next to us while we watched the sunset each night, laid in the shade on the grass with us after yard work, and patrolled the kitchen for crumbs during meal time. She was beloved by each of us. My father, who was typically stoic, tough, and serious, had even developed a soft spot for her. He played with her, barked back at her, and acted so tender and sweet toward her. When she passed away at age nine, it was the first time I saw my dad cry. We were both devastated by her loss; however, something about seeing my father let his guard down and let us see that he was upset helped him to feel more human to me. At that moment, our relationships became closer and I saw my dad not just as my father, but also my friend. We leaned on each other for support then and we still do. We continue to miss Bella dearly. My family's second dog is named Jaxon, and we acquired him by accident. My younger brother, Alex, brought him home one night because his friend's mother had told him he couldn't keep the dog. At that time, my brother was suffering from serious drug abuse. My parents were at their wit's end and they didn't know what to do. Alex was at risk of not graduating high school, he was depressed and unmotivated, had few friends, and my parents didn't know how to help. He asked my parents if he could keep Jaxon and he promised he would take responsibility. My parents, thinking it could be a good lesson for him, agreed. Alex's pathway to sobriety wasn't linear, and I can't give Jaxon all of the credit for getting him there, but Jaxon certainly helped. He was a companion for my brother during low times, he got my brother outside more for walks and playing, and he provided my brother with joy when it seemed like happiness was scarce. When I felt hopeless, I looked at Jaxon and was refilled with empathy and compassion for my brother. To me, Jaxon symbolized that Alex could get better. He represented hope. Now, Alex is three years sober and he still considers Jaxon his best friend. I feel so thankful that Jaxon is part of our family. The canine members of our family have made invaluable contributions. I miss Bella every day, and I treasure every moment I get with Jaxon. For any dogs I'm lucky enough to have in the future, I look forward to the unexpected impacts they'll have on me and the people I love.
Ethel Hayes Destigmatization of Mental Health Scholarship
When choosing which field to study for college, I hoped to avoid psychology at all cost. I was afraid of what the topic may expose about me or trigger within me because I was deeply guarded about my experiences with depression and eating disorders. In high school, my mental health conditions had cost me my friends and my reputation. I would not let the same thing happen in college. So, I chose to study physiology and prepare for medical school--a pathway that followed much more discrete and categorical methods, and something that didn't feel so close to home. However, during my sophomore year, my "big sister" in my sorority, Ally, began to change. The stories she told me about her boyfriend her family were different. She started abusing prescription drugs that was prescribed based on lies she told to her healthcare providers. She told me about people I knew to be kind and honest who were manipulating and abusing her. She started calling me to come to the hospital after attempts to take her own life after fights with her partner or best friend. I was devastated and I could not figure out what was happening to her. During my junior year, she passed away from suicide. Her mother came to the memorial at my university and told me that Ally had borderline personality disorder. I had never known. Again, a mental health condition had cost me a friend, but it wasn't my own condition this time. After Ally's death, I reflected on all the things I wished I had done differently. I wished I had recognized the signs and I wished I had known what to do about them. So, after graduating from college, I enrolled in a junior college class in psychopathology. I began to learn about the conditions that effected Ally and me. Ally's passing allowed me to approach psychology with compassion and openness because I now understood what it was like to love and feel empathy for a person with a mental health condition. I could start to apply that same sense of love and empathy for myself. I realized mental illness is not something to shut down or avoid because of shame; it's something to be validated and addressed so others don't meet the same end as Ally. Soon after I completed the course in psychopathology, I discovered that my younger brother, Alex, was abusing substances. I vowed I would do everything in my power to help my brother get help, as I wished I could have done for Ally. I came to my parents with pages of resources about rehabilitation facilities and symptoms of substance abuse and withdrawal. To date, the hardest thing I've ever had to do is tell my parents that my brother was abusing drugs and needed help. At first they didn't believe me. No parent would want to believe this about their child. However, they started to recognize the signs and symptoms themselves. After a year-and-a-half of fighting, my parents finally got my brother to agree to seek help. Alex enrolled in an inpatient rehabilitation program and my parents and I got help from our own therapists. Though the journey was devastating, draining, and long, my brother got sober and all of our relationships healed. I can't overstate the role of each of our therapists in helping us get to where we are now by reminding us of the love that was at the center of our anger, disappointment, and heartbreak. I continued going to therapy and finally properly addressed my own mental health, as well. Alex and I are now both in recovery--him from substance abuse, and me from depression and disordered eating. After witnessing the power and importance of the therapists that supported my family's journey, I decided to pursue a career in psychology. I first obtained my M.A. in psychology, and I am now returning to obtain my doctorate in psychology (Psy.D.). Mental health is something that is so close to my heart. Now, every day when I read the literature or news about the latest discoveries in psychological science, I'm reminded of our stories--Ally's, Alex's, and mine. I'm thankful for my experiences with mental illness rather than resentful or shameful. My connection to the field of psychology allows me to feel deep, genuine empathy and compassion that I hope can be a tool for supporting the growth of my future patients. My intention to help others reach good mental health is and always will be unswerving because it's personal. I've seen what mental health can look like when it goes both addressed and unaddressed. I've felt what it's like to suffer in a way that no one else can see. It seems outlandish that I used to avoid the topic of psychology because, now, I cannot wait to talk about it every day for the rest of my life.
    Bold Goals Scholarship
Through my professional and educational endeavors, I have been exposed to people, projects, and experiences that inspire continuous growth and expansion of my goals. I began my master's program in psychology with the goal of providing psychotherapy to others so I could help them to find meaning and joy in their lives no matter what their circumstances. However, as I gained exposure to professionals working with psychology in ways I had never imagined, I began to think outside of the box. During my master's program, I worked in patient advocacy in the biotechnology space. I found myself developing new professional goals for myself based on my academic experiences. I began to recognize the unmet psychological needs of the rare disease patient populations I worked with, which led me to develop a new goal: as a therapist, I'd like to specialize in health psychology so I can help individuals affected by rare disease to cope and learn to thrive, and support their loved ones who are also affected. One patient said to me, "Your disease is never just your own." As I began to work toward this goal and raise awareness of the psychosocial needs within rare disease communities, I realized that I love to advocate to and teach others about both psychology and rare diseases. Thus, my goals further developed: I'd like to also become a professor, perform research, and write academically. This fall, I will begin my doctorate in psychology so I can do just this. It's my goal to be a pioneer in the field so my work can benefit patients, their families, and my colleagues both in psychology and biotechnology. However, I'll maintain an open mind and know that, as I become exposed to additional sources of inspiration, my goals will continue to grow.
    Bold Longevity Scholarship
In order to live a long, healthy life, a person must cultivate a sense of meaning. The source of this meaning can be anything--from professional accomplishments, to relationships with family, to exploring the world. However, deriving fulfillment from one's life experiences and having something valuable to continue to look forward to or reflect back on is essential. When someone lacks a sense of meaning, they are not motivated to engage in the types of behaviors that lead to a long, healthy life such as taking care of themselves with exercise and proper nutrition. They are more likely to experience sadness and stress, which can result in detrimental physiological effects on the body. If a person is to live a long, healthy life, they must find something to live for. When a person enjoys their life, looks forward to future experiences, and is able to reflect on their past experiences with a sense of pride and healthy introspection, they will be motivated to preserve their good health and continue living. Studies have shown that people who are happier live longer. Thus, finding ways to feel fulfillment and belonging are essential to cultivating a long, healthy life.
    Bold Self-Care Scholarship
Too often, self-care is commodified, glamorized, and treated as a chore. There are two forms of self-care that are essential for my lifestyle: the type of self-care that forces me to ask important questions and think intentionally so I can best serve myself, and the type of self-care that allows me to completely shut off my thinking mind so I can feel joy, peace, and presence. I consider therapy, journaling, and critically thinking about my life circumstances in a productive way to be self-care. As someone who lives with depression and anxiety, it's become very important to me to engage in these processes so that I can audit my thought patterns. This helps me to ensure that my mental health is preserved and strengthened. It helps to absolve stresses related to cognitive dissonance or not living in accordance with my values. And, it helps me to understand what my true needs are in any given moment. I also consider activities like listening to audiobooks, reading, doing yoga, and engaging in my artistic hobbies like ceramics and tufting to be self-care. These activities allow me to experience creativity, flow, and inspiration. I am able to turn the volume of my own thoughts down and listen to the world around me, the voice of another, or nothing at all. My focus goes outside of myself and I'm reminded that I don't need to take myself so seriously. These two types of self-care are very different in execution and intention, but they're both pivotal in helping me to stay passionate, energetic, and focused in my personal, professional, and academic endeavors.
    Bold Relaxation Scholarship
Rest is not something you earn; rest is something you deserve not because you work hard, but because you are a human being with needs. We put a great deal of pressure on ourselves to spend every waking moment of the day productively--even our "down time" can become a to-do list: take off makeup, multi-step skincare routine, read 10 pages, stretch for 15 minutes, and so on. In order to truly benefit from the rest we give ourselves, it can't feel like a chore and we can't be focused on the completion of it. Instead, the best rest we can get is when we're fully present with whatever activity we're doing, even if it's just laying on the couch staring at the ceiling. I make a concerted effort to be fully grounded and present with each moment of rest. In this way, I turn each act of rest into a sort of meditation. When I take a bubble bath, I focus on the warmth of the water on my skin and the smell of soap. When I go to therapy to care for my mental health, I pay attention to the way I feel as I discuss different parts of my life, and even how it feels to pay attention to this. When I do yoga to care for my body, I devote my awareness to the sensations in my body and how they change as I move and breathe. I try to remain fully absorbed in the process of rest and care for myself so that my experience is not tainted by anxiety about the future, rumination on the past, or eagerness for the activity to be over. In developing this practice, I've found rest to be a great deal more restful.
    I Am Third Scholarship
My personal and professional goal in life is to combat the barriers that people face in reaching good mental health. I may not be able to change the adversity that others face or the conditions of their lives, but I can make an impact on the way they relate to their experiences. I plan to do this as a future therapist. When I was an undergraduate student, I wanted to become a doctor so I could help people be happier and healthier. However, the more experience I obtained, the more I came to understand that it's not people's situation that is the greatest predictor of their happiness and wellness; rather, it's the way they relate to their situation. This relationship is dependent on their thought processes, disposition, support system, and knowledge of resources. Furthermore, mental health is a factor that goes unattended far too often. In college, the catalyst for my change in passion from medicine to mental health was the death of my good friend, Ally. She saw doctor after doctor and was prescribed a myriad of medications for a collection of symptoms, but she was never referred to or treated by a mental health professional. She was posthumously diagnosed with borderline personality disorder. After Ally's passing, I vowed to never be in a position again where I didn't know how to help someone like Ally. Thus, I pursued my Master's degree in psychology. In my current role as a manager of patient advocacy, I work closely with individuals who have rare diseases. I connect them with helpful resources to learn about their condition and become a part of a community. I also speak with them about their experiences as a patient so that I can discover what their unmet needs are, and deliver this information to advocacy organizations and doctors so these unmet needs can be addressed. One glaring unmet need is in mental health. Living with a rare disease takes a massive toll on one's mental health. It is isolating, confusing, and chronically stressful. Most coordinated care teams lack psychologists or social workers, and very few mental health professionals are trained in how to treat rare disease patients. Receiving care for one's mental health is not only pivotal, it's also very difficult due to barriers such as insurance limitations, privacy concerns, lack of clarity around how to find a therapist that meets one's needs, and lifestyle factors like scheduling around one's work calendar. In my professional career as a future doctor of clinical psychology, I plan to address this by providing services at a sliding scale rate, offering group therapy after hours, offering teletherapy, and acting as an activist and advocate. I hope to work alongside patient organizations to influence policy that receiving good mental healthcare is more accessible for everyone. I am on a mission to better the lives of those around me. The best way I can think to do so is acting in a way that enables them to feel supported, heard, and understood. If my mission is successful, the lives of all those I work with will be touched in a way that allows them to go out into the world and do good in turn. Policies will shift so that more people can receive mental health services. Finally, fewer people will meet the same end as Ally.
    Bold Science Matters Scholarship
My favorite scientific discovery was the uncovering of a behavior called "mirroring." Mirroring is the process by which one person begins to mimic the gestures, speech, or attitude of another person--most times, without their own awareness. This is my favorite scientific discovery because it can be utilized in a variety of ways to help people. For example, in my current position in patient advocacy, I speak with a lot of patients about very difficult and vulnerable experiences. So, when such topics arise, I make an effort to have very intentional body language, gestures, and attitudes. I breathe slowly, and sometimes let out a sigh. I fix my face into a clearly empathetic expression. I also do my best to remain grounded and calm, so that the person I'm speaking with will pick up on these behaviors and begin to feel a sense of ease as well. I notice that the breathing I do is what patients most often pick up on. When I let out a sigh, they frequently let one out subsequently, and then continue in a way that indicates they are feeling a bit calmer. I also remain cognizant of mirroring in the opposite way--the way it may effect me. When I am working with people, I am aware of their verbal and nonverbal language. If they are acting standoffish or cold, I do my best not to let myself mirror that behavior. I effortfully keep my posture open and my tone of voice warm. This has often helped to encourage the person to open up themselves and begin to treat me with a more positive regard. Mirroring is such a fascinating phenomenon, and it can be useful in a variety of ways, especially for those of us in science who frequently work with other people.
    Bold Joy Scholarship
The two primary sources of joy in my life are that which I derive from deep interpersonal relationships, and which I experience vicariously through others. When I experience joy, I feel awe that we can experience such a thing. I am reminded of how remarkable it is to be human with a broad spectrum of emotions that allow us to feel our humanity. Humans are social animals, and many of us derive happiness from feeling heard, understood, and accepted. While this may be broadly true, other individual experiences are unique—no two people have the same stories, attitudes, and attributes. As a patient advocate, I have the privilege of learning about people’s stories, many of which are vulnerable. When the rare disease patients I work with tell me that they felt heard and understood by me, it's the greatest source of joy I could imagine. It's an immense gift to be trusted by another and it makes me elated that I can help another person by listening and holding space. I feel similarly when I witness my friends and family experience things that make them feel joy—like becoming parents, singing and dancing to music, or being recognized for their hard work. It makes me deeply grateful to take up space in their lives, and for them to be in mine. I seek this joy out by making time for my friends, family and the patients I work with, practicing presence in their company, asking questions, and listening to the answers. These relationships are a constant source of gratitude and joy. This is the ultimately the reason I hope to pursue a career in clinical psychology. In this role, I’ll be able to sit alongside my clients while they experience the broad range of human experiences—some of which will be joyful.
    Bold Helping Others Scholarship
The greatest gift that I've been able to provide others is helping them to feel truly heard and understood. By listening actively and empathetically, being present and nonjudgmental, and helping others to find language to communicate their experiences, I feel that I can truly make a difference for others. It's a true honor to be trusted with another person's stories and thoughts. Many people want to share these things with others, but are afraid of being met with judgment or rejection. When others feel safe around me, and when they tell me that talking to me helps them, I feel truly fulfilled. Not only is it meaningful for me, I also truly enjoy it. I find the people around me fascinating. All of us are so different from one another, and I am continuously inspired in new ways. I learn so much from the people I speak with about love, resilience, and generosity. I hear stories about travel, family, and lines of work I never knew existed. I learn about different areas of culture, science, literature, and art. Listening is a never-ending source of learning, and people are a source of hope. Thus, listening to others is not only beneficial for them in helping them feel seen and heard, it's also beneficial for me.
    Bold Wise Words Scholarship
In my current position, I work alongside rare disease patients. I learn about their journeys with their condition and I listen to their stories, which is the greatest honor. When I asked one man why he dedicates so much of his time to his work when he knew he had a rare and fatal disease, he responded, "You don't die in your bed with your socks on. Pull yourself up by your bootstraps and die doing something." This was incredibly inspiring to me. It's very difficult to talk to patients about the nature of their diseases. Within the disease areas I work, there are no existing curative treatments. There are treatments that can alleviate the burden of symptoms, and there are treatments that may slow the progression of the disease. However, patients know that, ultimately, they will die due to their condition. The gentleman I spoke with who shared this sentiment with me was able to talk about this disappointing truth; but, he always brought it back to the work he did. He owns a consulting business and helps hospitals to become more efficient operations so they ultimately can do a better job of saving people's lives. Even though this man's life couldn't be saved, he refused to give up on his mission saving others' lives. I think about this each time I feel discouraged or disappointed. No matter how long my life is, what I look like, or where I take residence, I can do something to help other people. Even when it's hard, or when there are barriers in the way, I won't give up on my personal mission to help others achieve good mental health as a future therapist. I won't die in my bed with my socks on. I'll die doing something.
Bold Hope for the Future Scholarship
I have hope because I seek out good news. Often times, we lose hope because the headlines we see highlight current events that are dangerous or disappointing. However, if we seek out things that are going on in the world that don't necessarily make headlines in big media outlets, we can see that the world is full of reasons to believe the future will be better. One way I look for good news is by staying up to date on research addressing climate change and alternative energy and new advances in medicine and treatment. There are many people across the globe who devote their time, intellect, energy, and funds to finding ways to solve these problems. We may not have yet have the ultimate answer to big questions such as, "Can we reverse the damage we've done to the Earth?" and "Is there a way to prevent cancer altogether?" However, the very fact that there are so many people who remain persistent and resolute in their mission to answer these questions gives me hope that it will one day be possible to do so. Additionally, I pay attention and make an effort to be present in everyday life. When I'm present for small moments, I see goodness in the world around me, and this gives me hope. For example, I was driving to work the other day and was stopped at a stoplight in my neighborhood. To my right, a little girl about three years old in a bright pink puffy jacket was standing at the front door of her house with her arms spread wide and a big smile on her face. She called out a name and a small, fluffy puppy bounded up the stairs and leapt into her arms. I smiled in response to their shared happiness and excitement. When I see moments like this, I feel hope that there are good people, love is a worthwhile pursuit, and we, as a species, are creative and resilient enough to fight for our own wellbeing.
