Bio

Hello everyone, and welcome to my Bold.org profile! If you did not already know from reading my profile, my name is Makendra Crosby. As of right now, I am still a high school student, but I do take classes at the community college level. I am also a dual enrollment student earning both high school and college credits for my coursework. I am hoping to receive my Associates of Arts and Sciences from my community college when I graduate in 2022. Diving a bit more into my personal life, I am the oldest child with a little brother who is in the 10th grade. I help him with his homework from time-to-time. Both of my parents are teachers/professors, so I guess it comes naturally to help educate others. I do feel as if I would be better at an office or a stay-at-home job than teaching, but who really knows what is in store for me. Moving along, I enjoy volunteering and not just as a means to try and make my resume look good. I try to be involved in my community as much as I can by volunteering at local charity organizations and my school. I also like to spend most of my time with them whether that be at the movie theater or at the bowling alley. Going back to my academics and interests, I want to pursue a career in STEM, specifically computer science. I have been coding since I’ve been in the sixth grade, and I feel as if I could make a good living from it. Preferably, I want at least a masters in Computer Science, and I want a stay-at-home job after college, so I can still travel and see the world. Hopefully, Bold.Org scholarships can help me pursue my education and dreams.

      Black Students in STEM Scholarship
STEM, also known as the fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics, is growing every day, and this is no surprise because most careers or jobs in STEM utilize computers and technology. Computers and technology are a big part of the world and society today because there is nothing that cannot be done or fixed without the help of an app or the Internet. Basically, the possibilities of helping and making life easier for everyone is endless when it comes to the four fields that make up STEM. For example, because of covid-19, some might not feel comfortable leaving their houses or having close contact with others in a store, but because of technology and all sorts of apps, a person is able to place an order of various items with their mobile device and have it delivered right to their house. To add on to this, it can be concluded that my passion for STEM comes from the fact that it is always evolving and helps others in various ways from remembering important events to staying current with news updates. There are also other factors that influence my love for STEM such as my family members. More specifically, my father and grandfather. My father is a technology teacher, and my grandfather runs an HVAC business, which somewhat is associated with electrical engineering. Seeing my father and my grandfather thrive in their natural elements of technology and engineering really made me want to have a career similar to theirs. Ultimately, I chose computer science because it incorporates all four fields of STEM, so I would sign up for all sorts of computer science-related activities such as robotics clubs and hackathons, and, ultimately I ended up falling even harder for STEM. Not to mention, I have seen what computer science (and other fields of STEM) have done for the lives of others. Like the previously mentioned example, there is basically an app for everything. There is an app that is capable of checking the insulin levels of those with diabetes, there is an app that keeps track of all coursework for those that are still in school, and there is an app that reminds someone of what to do for those that are forgetful. Being able to make even a small difference in someone’s life is what makes me want to pursue a STEM degree in the first place. To summarize, I am passionate about STEM because I have seen the difference it makes for everyone to have any four of the fields in their lives.
