FinalistBio
Hello! My name is Makena Silva and I am 18 years old. My dream career is to become a Licensed Professional Counselor specializing in working with young children. I am an only child to a low-income single parent who is currently battling Inflammatory Breast Cancer.
I am currently a freshman in college attending Texas State University and I will graduate in May of 2028. My biggest accomplishment was completing my Girl Scout Gold Award where I taught elementary aged students the basics of sewing and then we collectively created and donated over 300 head wraps to cancer patients all over the Rio Grande Valley. I dedicated this award to my grandmother who passed away from cancer and my mother who is currently undergoing cancer treatment at MD Anderson in Houston for an aggressive form of breast cancer - Inflammatory Breast Cancer.
MD Anderson is currently our home away from home as we travel over 300 miles to and from Houston for treatment every three weeks. We have spent extended lengths of time in Houston - once for 2 weeks for my mom's radical mastectomy and another for 6 weeks while she underwent twice a day radiation. This has been an emotional challenge while taking college classes and a financial challenge while trying to plan for college funding.
I am excited to attend college and can't wait to see what the future holds for me! “Courage is taking those first steps to your dream, even if you can't see the path ahead."

I am Makena Silva, an only child raised in a single-parent household, and my heart is set on a career in psychology, specifically as a Child Psychologist. My journey through education has been marked not only by dedication and ambition but also by significant challenges that have tested my resilience and determination. The pivotal moment in my life came during the summer before my junior year of high school when my mother was diagnosed with a rare and aggressive form of cancer - Inflammatory Breast Cancer. This diagnosis shook our world to its core, and the subsequent intense treatment regimen demanded immense strength and determination from both my mother and myself. Despite grappling with her own battles, my mother continued to emphasize the importance of education, instilling in me the belief that knowledge is not just power but also a beacon of hope even in the darkest of times. As my mother faced the hardships of her illness, I found myself taking on new responsibilities as her caregiver. Our bond, already strong, deepened as I provided emotional support, attended countless medical appointments, and assisted with daily tasks. This newfound role required resilience and adaptability, qualities I had to cultivate rapidly to navigate the challenges we faced together. One of the most daunting challenges during this time was the financial strain on our family. The costs associated with medical treatment, medications, and related expenses began to accumulate, casting a shadow over my aspirations for higher education. We faced a difficult decision: should I pursue my dream of attending college, potentially jeopardizing the resources necessary for my mother's recovery, or prioritize her health at the expense of my own educational ambitions? This is where the scholarship opportunity becomes paramount. Receiving this scholarship would not only alleviate the financial burden on our family but also provide me with the means to continue my higher education without sacrificing the support and care my mother needs during her recovery. It represents a beacon of hope amidst uncertainty, a lifeline that can propel me forward towards my goals while ensuring that my mother's well-being remains a top priority. Throughout these trying times, my commitment to academic excellence never wavered. I successfully graduated Summa Cum Laude from my high school, a testament to my dedication to excellence despite the challenges I faced. The Girl Scout Gold Award I received further solidified my resolve to excel, reaffirming my belief in the transformative power of education. As I step into this next chapter of my academic journey, I do so with a profound sense of responsibility. I recognize the significance of my role as my mother's caregiver and the importance of being by her side, providing the support and love she deserves during this challenging time. With this scholarship, I can strike a balance between my educational aspirations and my responsibilities at home, ensuring that I can be a source of strength for my mother while continuing to pursue my dreams. In summary, my motivation to succeed stems from a strong desire to make my mother proud, which is at the center of my motivation. The uncertainties of the past few years, particularly as my mother bravely battles breast cancer, has only intensified my determination to succeed. This scholarship represents not just a financial aid opportunity, but a chance to honor my mother's sacrifices and continue my pursuit of academic excellence. It is a testament to the power of resilience, hope, and the unwavering belief that education can transform lives, even in the face of adversity.

Joy Of Life Inspire’s AAA Scholarship
Helping members of our community can take many forms, from simple acts of kindness to organized volunteer efforts. One impactful way to contribute is by volunteering time and skills to support those in need. Over the past five years, I have embraced the idea that while we may not control every situation, we have the power to shape our attitudes and responses. This perspective has been especially significant during the challenging times my family faced due to cancer. In 2019, my beloved grandmother succumbed to Synovial Sarcoma after a two-year battle. Witnessing her unwavering strength inspired me to take up sewing, creating headwraps that brought her comfort and pride during her cancer battle. Fast forward three years, and my sewing hobby evolved into a meaningful initiative. In pursuit of my Girl Scout Gold Award, I designed a project honoring my grandmother's memory. I taught elementary school children the art of sewing, guiding them to craft headwraps destined for donation to cancer facilities in our community. The goal was ambitious: collectively create 100 headwraps during our summer program, with an additional 100 crafted by me. In the end, we surpassed expectations, donating over 200 headwraps to facilities across the Rio Grande Valley. This endeavor not only contributed tangible support to those affected by cancer but also ignited a passion for sewing in the children involved. Witnessing their enthusiasm and commitment, some even purchasing their sewing machines, reinforced my belief that my grandmother would be proud. Just as I thought my journey with cancer was concluding, my family received more disheartening news – my mother was diagnosed with Inflammatory Breast Cancer. This news was devastating as she is a single-parent and I am an only child. The initial shock gave way to a commitment to be my mother's "chemo-cheerleader." Six months into her journey, she continues to face cancer with resilience and a radiant smile. Despite the challenges of balancing school with supporting my mother's treatments at MD Anderson, I wouldn't trade these moments for anything. This adversity has reignited my commitment to giving back through my project, "Wrapped in Love." Teaming up with another summer program, I continue to teach sewing to young children, perpetuating the creation and donation of headwraps for cancer patients. While the diagnoses of my grandmother and mother were unwelcome, they fueled my determination to live by the quote that has guided me: control my attitude, believe in the power of prayer, trust in the goodness of people, and have faith in God. There are numerous ways to help your community including participating in community clean-up events helps preserve the environment and enhances the aesthetic appeal of our neighborhoods. Additionally, donating goods or funds to local shelters, food banks, or charities provides vital resources to those in need. Moreover, mentoring programs offer opportunities to empower youth and guide them towards a brighter future. In conclusion, my journey with cancer has not only shaped my perspective but has motivated me to extend a helping hand to others. Through teaching and sewing, I have found a way to give back to my community, turning personal adversity into an opportunity to make a positive impact. By engaging in acts of service, we not only uplift others but also strengthen the bonds that unite us as a community. Together, we can create a more inclusive, compassionate, and resilient society for all.

The unique combination of these circumstances has given me a perspective on life that sets me apart, and my recent experiences have further strengthened my resolve to overcome obstacles. In the past year, my family has faced the profound impact of my mother's unexpected diagnosis of a rare and aggressive form of breast cancer - Inflammatory Breast Cancer. Countless trips for medical appointments and relocating to Houston for her demanding treatment plan significantly strained our finances. Despite nurturing the dream of attending college throughout my life, the ongoing treatment makes it difficult to attain without jeopardizing the resources essential for my mother's recovery. Receiving this scholarship would not only enable me to continue my higher education but also ensure that my mother receives the care she needs. To make a positive impact, I dedicated my Girl Scout Gold Award, titled "Wrapped in Love," to my mother. This program involved teaching sewing skills to elementary school students and creating over 300 headwraps to donate to local cancer facilities. The choice of headwraps was inspired by the emotions I witnessed in my mother during her battle with cancer, aiming to ensure that no woman facing a similar journey would feel ashamed of her looks. My life experiences have fueled a desire to continue making a difference. Educating others on cancer and contributing to the cancer community through projects like "Wrapped in Love" are ways I plan to use my life experience to create a positive impact. I hope to extend this initiative for years to come, with the goal of making a greater impact on individuals facing similar challenges. The loss of my grandmother to Synovial Sarcoma in 2019 profoundly shaped my outlook on life and inspired me to embark on a journey of resilience and compassion. Her unwavering strength and positivity throughout her battle with cancer taught me the power of perseverance and the importance of maintaining a positive attitude in the face of adversity. Before her passing, I sought to bring comfort to my grandmother by creating head wraps for her through a newfound hobby of sewing. Witnessing her pride and joy in wearing these head wraps filled me with a sense of purpose and fulfillment, knowing that I could provide her with some solace during her difficult time. Three years later, I decided to honor my grandmother's memory by pursuing my Girl Scout Gold Award project, which centered around teaching elementary school children the basics of sewing to create head wraps for cancer patients. This project was a culmination of my desire to make a meaningful impact in my community while honoring the memory of my beloved grandmother. The journey to completing my Gold Award project was arduous, yet incredibly rewarding. I dedicated countless hours to teaching children during the day and sewing headwraps at night, driven by the goal of making a difference in the lives of cancer patients. Together with the children, we surpassed our initial goal, sewing over 200 head wraps and donating them to cancer facilities across the Rio Grande Valley. Throughout this journey, I encountered incredible individuals, formed lasting friendships, and had the opportunity to share my story with various organizations and media outlets. Each head wrap created and donated was a testament to my grandmother's enduring legacy of love, strength, and resilience. Reflecting on this experience, I am reminded of the quote, "You may not be able to control every situation and its outcome, but you can control your attitude and how you deal with it." My grandmother's unwavering optimism in the face of adversity continues to inspire me to approach life with a positive mindset and a compassionate heart, no matter the challenges I may encounter. Her memory lives on through the impact I strive to make in the lives of others, and I am forever grateful for the lessons she imparted to me through her courageous battle with cancer. The project I undertook was not only a tribute to her but also a testament to the enduring power of love and the human spirit in overcoming adversity.

My experience with mental health has profoundly influenced my beliefs, relationships, and career aspirations. Having struggled with mental health challenges from a young age and having attended therapy multiple times, I have become a passionate advocate for mental health awareness and support. My journey has shaped my determination to become a Child Psychologist, driven by the desire to make a positive impact on the lives of young individuals who face similar challenges. Therapy, a term often shrouded in taboo and misconceptions, has played a pivotal role in my life. When I initially sought therapy, I encountered the stigma associated with it. Many people view therapy as a last resort, a sign of being "broken" or unable to cope with life's challenges. However, my personal experiences with counseling have revealed the profound impact it can have on an individual's well-being.
During my high school years, I faced a dual battle with an eating disorder and the distressing news of my mother's cancer diagnosis. It was during this trying period that family members encouraged me to consider therapy for support. Initially, I hesitated, fearing that seeking therapy implied weakness or an inability to manage my own life's challenges. However, through my therapy sessions, my perspective transformed. I learned that therapy is not a sign of weakness but an opportunity for growth and healing. Through therapy, I discovered that I was not alone in my struggles. Therapists provided invaluable resources and coping mechanisms to navigate the difficulties I was facing, fostering a sense of empowerment and resilience within me. These experiences have shaped my career aspirations. I aspire to become a Child Psychologist to help young individuals who are navigating the complexities of their mental health. I want to provide them with the same support, understanding, and tools that my therapists offered me. My goal is to make them feel heard, valued, and less alone in the face of their own challenges. I am committed to destigmatizing mental health and making counseling more accessible and accepted in society. I believe that seeking help should be seen as an act of courage and self-compassion, rather than a sign of weakness. By becoming a Child Psychologist, I aim to create a safe and nurturing space for young individuals, where they can express themselves, receive support, and acquire the skills to cope with life's adversities.
Receiving this scholarship would not only enable me to continue my higher education but also ensure that my mother receives the care she needs. The financial burdens resulting from my mother's diagnosis has added an extra layer of difficulty. Countless trips for medical appointments and relocating to Houston for her demanding treatment plan significantly strained our finances. Despite nurturing the dream of attending college throughout my life, the ongoing treatment makes it difficult to attain without jeopardizing the resources essential for my mother's recovery. It's an opportunity to fulfill our shared aspiration of attending college and ease the financial strain on our family. I am committed to making the most of this opportunity, both for my education and to provide unwavering support to my mother on her path to recovery.
In conclusion, my personal journey with mental health challenges and therapy has profoundly influenced my beliefs, relationships, and career aspirations. I have experienced firsthand the transformative power of therapy and the positive impact it can have on an individual's life. I am determined to become a Child Psychologist to provide young individuals with the support and guidance they need to navigate their own mental health struggles, break the stigma, and help them realize they are not alone in their battles.

In conclusion, my journey from a single-parent, low-income household has equipped me with the strength to overcome adversity, and I am committed to using my experiences to make a lasting and positive impact on my community and the world.

Hello I am Makena Silva, a senior from Harlingen, Texas, and I take pride in the positive imprint I've already left on my local community. My life has been marked by challenges that have shaped my character and fueled my passion for making a positive impact on the world. These challenges have taught me that obstacles can be opportunities for growth and change. As I pursue a career in psychology, with the goal of becoming a child psychologist, I am determined to use my experiences to make a meaningful difference in the lives of those facing emotional and mental health challenges, especially children. At the start of high school, my beloved grandmother's battle with cancer ended. Instead of succumbing to grief, I honored her memory by dedicating my Girl Scout Gold Award project, "Wrapped in Love," to her. In this program, I taught sewing skills to students and created headwraps for cancer patients to boost their self-esteem while undergoing treatment. This experience allowed me to bond with students and make a meaningful impact on the cancer community. However, the beginning of my junior year brought another unexpected challenge when my mother was diagnosed with Inflammatory Breast Cancer, a rare and aggressive form of the disease. As my mother's primary support system being an only child to a single-parent, I balanced the emotional and physical toll of her battle with cancer with the responsibilities of school and a 4.0 GPA. I also continued the "Wrapped in Love" project, dedicated to both my mother and grandmother, and relocated to Houston for her treatment. My journey has reinforced my passion for psychology and the desire to specialize as a child psychologist. I've witnessed firsthand the importance of mental and emotional support during challenging times. I aim to provide this crucial support to children and their families who face similar difficulties. I've learned the importance of compassionate healthcare and am committed to being part of the solution. My experiences have instilled in me a deep sense of empathy and resilience. I plan to continue the "Wrapped in Love" project and advocate for the cancer community, all while pursuing a career in psychology that allows me to provide the care and support children deserve during their emotional and mental health journeys. In conclusion, my life story has defined me as a compassionate and determined individual. Through my intended field of psychology and my aspiration to become a child psychologist, I aim to leverage my experiences to make a positive impact on the world, especially in the lives of children facing emotional and mental health challenges. I am ready to keep making a difference in the lives of those in need, one child at a time.

This quote is exactly what I have strived to do these last four years of my life. The year 2019 marks the beginning of the cancer journey within my family. My grandmother, who was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer called Synovial Sarcoma, sadly passed away after her two year long fight. Throughout her journey she was a superhero; she never cried, never stopped smiling, and never lost hope. She truly was an angel on Earth and was one of my most favorite people. Although she was strong like a superhero, she was still human and struggled with her appearance since her diagnosis, especially the loss of her long, beautiful brown hair. Before her passing I decided to pick up a new hobby of sewing and I would create headwraps for her; trying to do anything I could possibly do to help her. She would wear them with so much pride knowing that her granddaughter personally made them for her, which filled me with joy knowing I could make her feel just a little better even though she was feeling worse than I could ever imagine. Little did I know that three years later this new sewing hobby would change my life. During the summer of my sophomore year I decided to pursue my Girl Scout Gold Award. The Girl Scout Gold Award is the highest honor award a Girl Scout can achieve. Immediately I knew that I wanted to honor my grandmother with my project. My Gold Award project centered on me teaching elementary school children the basics of sewing with the end result being the creation of headwraps. We would then donate the headwraps to cancer facilities in our community. In total we donated over 250 head wraps to cancer facilities all over the Rio Grande Valley. I thought my relationship with cancer was over but, a few months after completing my Gold Award, we received some additional shocking news. My mother was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer called Inflammatory Breast Cancer. This news was heartbreaking to me. My whole life it has just been my mother and myself: a single mom and an only child. Us against the world. Her journey has sparked my desire to continue my Gold Award project, which is titled Wrapped in Love. I have already teamed up with another program to teach sewing to young children and continue the creation and donation process of headwraps for cancer patients. Although the diagnoses of my grandmother and mother were unwanted circumstances, I believe I strived to follow the quote I previously stated. I hope anyone going through their own personal battle with cancer or has a loved one that is going through their battle will be just like my mom and my grandmother and remember to never lose hope and always believe in the power of prayer, the goodness of people and, most importantly, to trust in God. They, too, are Wrapped in Love.

On August 19, 2022, the beginning of my junior year brought unexpected challenges. My mother was diagnosed with Inflammatory Breast Cancer, a rare and aggressive form of the disease. We were a tight-knit single-parent family, and she was not just my mother but also my closest confidante, partner-in-crime, and dearest friend. Her diagnosis catapulted me into a new role - that of her "Chemo Cheerleader," a nickname she lovingly bestowed upon me. My junior year took an unusual turn. While my peers were facing typical teenage challenges like learning to drive, maintaining grades, and enjoying time with friends, I was navigating the emotional and practical responsibilities that came with supporting my mother's cancer battle. Junior year is known for its academic challenges, but mine was unique. I had to remain strong and maintain a facade of composure, concealing the emotional turmoil I experienced. My mother's well-being became my top priority, and I became her unwavering support system. I attended every chemo session, surgery, and radiation treatment. I learned to dress wounds, tend to burns, and change medical tubes - tasks I never expected a teenager to perform. But I did them without hesitation because my mother needed me. In the final month of junior year, I relocated to Houston to be with my mother during her intensive twice-daily radiation treatments. This meant leaving my friend group and coping with isolation. Yet, witnessing my mother's strength and resilience profoundly impacted me. Through this journey, I learned that even in the face of adversity, there can be a positive outlook, especially when the benefits are for others. This experience solidified my desire to pursue a STEM career. I saw the incredible impact of medical advancements on my mother's treatment, which fueled my passion for contributing to these fields. As my junior year came to a close, I achieved a 4.0 GPA and received the Honor Roll award despite significant personal challenges. This journey instilled in me a profound sense of purpose and a commitment to making a positive impact in STEM, particularly in medical research and innovation. Adversity can be a catalyst for personal growth and contributing to the well-being of others. I am driven by a deep-seated desire to pursue a STEM major and make a meaningful difference through scientific innovation.

Exemplifying leadership in my everyday life has taken on a deeply personal and profound meaning. It all began just before my junior year when I was entrusted with one of the most significant leadership roles a child could ever assume - caring for a parent. A mere week before the new school year commenced, my world was shaken as my mother received a devastating diagnosis of Inflammatory Breast Cancer, a rare and aggressive form of the disease. It had always been just my mom and me, a tight-knit single-parent family. She was not only my mother but also my very best friend, my soulmate, and my unwavering companion. In the face of this life-altering challenge, I knew I had to be there for her every step of the way. I willingly embraced the role of her "Chemo Cheerleader," a loving nickname she bestowed upon me. I anticipated the typical challenges that come with junior year: learning to drive, maintaining good grades, enjoying time with friends, and participating in school activities. However, nothing could have prepared me for the emotional and physical toll of witnessing my mother's battle with cancer. While most teenagers grapple with the rigors of their junior year for different reasons, mine was marked by a unique set of challenges. I understood that I needed to stay strong and wear a brave face, not just for my mother but for my friends and family as well. I found myself concealing the stress as if I were wearing a mask that I couldn't remove either at home or at school. I was determined not to let anyone see that I was slowly succumbing to the storm that had become my life. Amidst the turmoil and upheaval, I recognized that one thing stood above all else during this time: my mother needed to know she was not alone in her fight. So, I became her unwavering support system. I was present for every chemo session, every surgery, and every radiation treatment. I learned how to dress wounds, tend to burns, and change medical tubes, tasks I never imagined a teenager would undertake. But I did it all, without hesitation and complaint, because my mother needed me. In these profound and challenging circumstances, my everyday life became a testament to leadership in its purest form. I learned the true meaning of responsibility, resilience, and unwavering commitment. It was in these moments of adversity that I discovered my capacity to lead with empathy and courage. I was not leading a team or an organization; I was leading in the most critical role of my life, as a source of strength and unwavering love for my mother. This experience has deeply shaped my perspective on leadership, teaching me that leadership is not defined solely by titles or positions, but by the actions and support we provide when others need us most. I have come to understand that leadership is about stepping up, even when it's incredibly difficult, and making a positive impact in the lives of those we care about.

“You may not be able to control every situation and its outcome, but you can control your attitude and how you deal with it.” - Anonymous. This quote is exactly what I have strived to do these past few years. At the start of my junior year, my mother was diagnosed with Inflammatory Breast Cancer, a rare and aggressive form of cancer. This news was heartbreaking to me. My whole life it has just been my mother and myself: a single mom and an only child. At first, I kept thinking of all the negative outcomes that could come from this. I reflected and realized that there was no point in worrying about the things I physically could not control and I decided to make the best of the unfortunate situation. During this time, I was striving to achieve my Girl Scout Gold Award and ultimately decided to dedicate my project to my mother. My project, called Wrapped in Love, centered on me teaching elementary school children about the basics of sewing with the result being the creation of headwraps. We would then donate the headwraps we created to cancer facilities in our community. I was able to finish the project by donating over 300 headwraps to various cancer facilities and individuals touched with cancer. Throughout the journey, I was able to meet amazing people, make new friends, and make appearances on various organization sites and local news stations to share the story of my project and the effects cancer has had on my life and those that I have encountered. During this same time, I would have to move 600 miles away to another city to accommodate my mother's treatment plan, having me leave my friends and family behind. It was very hard juggling my class work plus missing months of school; relying on emails and Zoom videos to learn the class content. Although at times the move felt secluding and lonely, I wouldn't trade the time with my mom for anything else in the world. This whole journey has taught me that even through obstacles and challenges there can always be a positive outlook to even the more precarious of situations. Something positive can always come out of the situation, even if it doesn't benefit you, but instead benefits others. As my junior year came to a close, I still ended with a 4.0 GPA and received the Honor Roll award for my scholarly success in school. I was officially awarded my Girl Scout Gold Award and I have maintained Wrapped in Love and continue to create and donate headwraps to local cancer clinics. My mom and I were able to move back home for her next leg of treatment and I began my senior year back with friends and familiarity. In the future, I hope to become a professional counselor and help others who might have been in a similar situation as me. I want to share that there is hope in whatever problem they are facing and I want them to know they are loved and supported.
