Throughout high school, I have encountered teachers who challenged me, but none have influenced me as profoundly as Kristy Connor. Ms. Connor not only shaped my academic growth but also transformed how I approach challenges and view my own potential. Before working with her, I struggled with public speaking. The thought of standing in front of a panel or audience filled me with anxiety, and I often avoided opportunities to speak. When I was selected to compete in the 6th Annual Health and Biomedical Challenge, I knew I had to face this fear head-on. Ms. Connor became the guiding force who helped me overcome my anxiety. She challenged me to practice my speech every day, refining my tone, pacing, and presence until I could present with clarity and confidence. While some may see her as a strict or demanding teacher, I quickly realized that her firmness came from belief; she saw the potential in me before I could see it in myself. She pushed me to persist, reminding me that growth comes from effort and discipline, even when it feels uncomfortable. With her guidance, I transformed fear into preparation and hesitation into confidence. On the day of the competition, I presented in front of the judges with conviction, helping my team win first place out of seven groups for our project on Misinformation and Public Health Communication. I even earned my Biotechnician Assistant Certificate through the Medical Magnet Program thanks to her, in my Junior year of high school. This is a great feat since it gave me better insight into the biotechnological side of science. Since I want to go into the medical field, getting this certificate allows me the opportunity to work in a lab and get experience sooner rather than later. The experience of having her as a teacher taught me that obstacles are opportunities when paired with dedication and mentorship. Ms. Connor’s influence extends beyond public speaking. She taught me the value of discipline, perseverance, and believing in my abilities. Her mentorship changed how I approach challenges in life: I now embrace them as opportunities for growth rather than sources of fear. Inspired by her example, I aim to be a mentor for others, helping students and future professionals face their fears, develop confidence, and achieve goals they may once have thought impossible. Her guidance showed me that a teacher’s belief can ignite a lifelong sense of purpose, and I hope to pay that forward in my own journey in medicine and service.

I am a hardworking and determined student with a passion for science, service, and community, and I am committed to using my skills and education to make a meaningful impact on the world. Growing up in a full house with strong family values, I learned early the importance of responsibility, empathy, and supporting those around me. These lessons have shaped my dedication to serving others, both through my academic pursuits and my community involvement. Throughout high school, I have sought opportunities to contribute to my school and local community. As a member of the National Honor Society, I volunteer regularly, assist with community service projects, help set up school events, and mentor younger students. In the National Science Honor Society, I encourage interest in STEM among peers, organize activities, and contribute to discussions that advance scientific curiosity. My work with the National Beta Club includes providing meals to those in need, maintaining the cleanliness of Sheeler Oaks, donating goods to support community members, and participating in outreach discussions. Additionally, as a member of the Student Government Association and Senior Class Council, I help plan Homecoming events, spirit weeks, and senior activities while fostering student engagement and supporting teachers. Beyond school, I volunteer with the City of Ocoee during major holiday events, engaging with children and families to strengthen community spirit. Even at home, I show service by babysitting my younger cousins, providing care and guidance. Academically, I have challenged myself through rigorous coursework and dual enrollment. I am proud to have earned the AICE Diploma, completing seven Cambridge AICE classes and becoming one of the few students at my school to achieve this distinction. I also earned a Biotechnician Assistant Certificate through the Medical Magnet Program, dedicating countless hours to mastering laboratory skills. My team won the 6th Annual Health and Biomedical Challenge for our project on Misinformation and Public Health Communication, where I overcame my fear of public speaking to present confidently in front of a panel of judges. Additionally, I have maintained a spot on the Valencia College President’s List through dual enrollment, earning high grades while pursuing college-level coursework since my freshman year and preparing to earn my Associate’s degree by high school graduation. My career goal is to become an esteemed medical professional, earning a PhD and using my education to improve healthcare access and outcomes, particularly for underserved communities in Orange County and in Jamaica. I plan to combine clinical practice, research, and community outreach to address health disparities, educate families, and mentor future healthcare professionals. Earning this scholarship is essential to making that vision a reality, it will provide the financial support I need to focus fully on my education and preparation for a career devoted to service. With this foundation, I will leave a lasting, positive impact on the communities I serve, honoring my family’s sacrifices while using medicine as a tool to improve lives.

Throughout my academic journey, I have been fortunate to encounter strong female mentors, but none have impacted me as profoundly as my teacher, Kristy Connor. At a time when my fear of public speaking felt paralyzing, she saw potential in me that I struggled to see in myself. Her mentorship not only helped me overcome anxiety, but also reshaped how I view challenges, discipline, and confidence. Public speaking was once my greatest insecurity. The thought of standing before a panel of judges or even my classmates would cause my heart to race and my voice to tremble. When I was selected to compete in the 6th Annual Health and Biomedical Challenge, I was both honored and terrified. Our team’s focus was Misinformation and Public Health Communication, a topic requiring clarity, poise, and strong delivery. I doubted whether I could perform at the level necessary to represent my team well. Ms. Connor did not allow me to shrink back. While some may perceive her as a hard or strict teacher, I came to understand that her firmness was rooted in belief. She pushed me to practice my speech every single day. There were no shortcuts. She corrected my tone, refined my pacing, challenged my posture, and made me repeat sections until my confidence matched my content. At times, I felt frustrated and emotionally drained. Yet she remained consistent, reminding me that growth is uncomfortable and that excellence requires discipline. Slowly, something shifted. What once felt impossible began to feel manageable. My voice steadied. My posture straightened. I no longer memorized words out of fear; I understood them with conviction. When the day arrived to present in front of the judges and panel, I carried not only preparation, but also belief. Competing against seven other groups, I spoke with clarity and confidence. When my team won for Misinformation and Public Health Communication, the victory meant more than a title, it was proof that I had overcome a barrier I once thought defined me. Ms. Connor taught me that true mentorship is not about comfort; it is about calling someone higher than they believe they can go. She saw light in me before I recognized it myself. Her guidance helped me transform anxiety into strength and fear into achievement. As I pursue a future in the medical field, I plan to embody that same mentorship for others. Medicine requires not only knowledge, but reassurance, leadership, and advocacy. I want to encourage young students, especially those who doubt their abilities in STEM or fear stepping outside their comfort zones, to recognize their potential. Whether mentoring aspiring healthcare professionals, educating patients, or supporting children in underserved communities, I will strive to challenge others with compassion, just as Ms. Connor challenged me. Her belief in me changed the trajectory of my confidence. My goal is to be that same steady voice for someone else, the mentor who sees beyond fear and helps others discover their strength.
