I am a first generation college student attending Michigan State University and I am majoring in Forestry. I dread the idea of having a 9-5 desk job and instead want to explore all the world has to offer me. I am very passionate about making a difference in the environment and teaching others how to take care of their local environment.

After college, my primary goal is to pursue a career in forestry and environmental conservation, by utilizing the knowledge and skills I've gained throughout my education in order to make a meaningful impact on the world around me. Despite the financial challenges I've had to face as a first-generation college student paying my own way through school, I am determined to turn my passion for plants and the environment into a fulfilling life long career.
To reach this goal, I've been proactive in taking steps to prepare myself for life after college. Firstly, I've immersed myself in my forestry studies, dedicating countless hours to mastering the principles of forest ecology, vegetation, natural resource management, and more. Through hands-on fieldwork during my classes, I've gained practical experience in forest ecosystems, plant identification, and conservation practices.
Additionally, I've actively sought out internships and opportunities to further expand my knowledge and skills in the field. Despite my busy schedule balancing work and academics, I've managed to secure internships with local forestry organizations and conservation groups, where I've had the chance to apply classroom learning to real-world scenarios. These experiences have been invaluable in deepening my understanding of forestry practices and the challenges facing our natural environment.
Furthermore, I recognize the importance of networking and building connections within the small industry, and I love our small community. Despite my limited time for extracurricular activities, I've made a concerted effort to attend forestry conferences, seminars, and alumni events whenever they are being hosted. These opportunities have allowed me to meet professionals in the field, gain insights into potential career paths, and forge valuable connections that may prove beneficial in the future.
Looking ahead, I plan to continue pursuing opportunities for professional development and growth. Whether through advanced coursework, certifications, or specialized training programs, I am committed to expanding my expertise and staying current with emerging trends and technologies in forestry and environmental science.
In terms of my post-college plans, I envision myself working in a role where I can directly contribute to the conservation and sustainable management of forests and natural resources. Whether as a forest technician, environmental consultant, or conservation biologist, I am eager to apply my knowledge and skills to address pressing environmental issues such as deforestation, habitat loss, and climate change.
Moreover, I am passionate about environmental education and outreach, particularly in underserved communities where access to nature and environmental awareness may be limited. I intend to use my platform and expertise to advocate for environmental literacy and inspire others to appreciate and protect our planet's precious resources.
In conclusion, my journey as a first-generation college student majoring in forestry has been challenging, but it has also been incredibly rewarding. Despite the financial obstacles I've faced, I am determined to pursue my passion for environmental conservation and make a positive impact on the world around me. Through dedication, hard work, and a commitment to lifelong learning, I am confident that I will achieve my goals and contribute to a more sustainable future for generations to come.
Janice Louise Olach Scholarship
One of the biggest struggles I've faced as an girl majoring in forestry is the financial burden of being a first-generation college student. Paying for college by myself has been incredibly challenging and has impacted every aspect of my life. The constant worry about tuition, textbooks, and living expenses has added immense stress to my already busy schedule. Due to this immense stress I've had to be medicated on anxiety medication in order to cope with the never ending workload.
Juggling a full course load with a part-time job to make ends meet has left me with little time for extracurricular activities or socializing. It's been a constant balancing act, trying to excel academically while also working to support myself financially. This struggle has tested my resilience and determination in ways I never imagined.
To overcome this challenge, I've had to be incredibly disciplined and resourceful. I've learned to budget my time and money wisely, prioritizing my studies while still earning enough to cover my expenses. I've also sought out every available scholarship and financial aid opportunity, tirelessly filling out applications and writing essays to secure funding for my education. Just like Jan I am pursuing my education at Michigan State University, and have exceeded every resource that is available to be there.
This struggle has changed me as a person in profound ways. It's made me more independent, resilient, and resourceful than I ever thought possible. I've learned the value of hard work and perseverance, and I've developed a deep appreciation for the opportunities that education affords.
Despite the hardships I've faced, I am determined to use my experiences to make a positive impact on others. I am passionate about forestry and environmental conservation, and I am already state certified in environmental science through ducks unlimited. I want to share that passion with the world. I hope to use my education and experiences to educate others about the importance of plants and the environment, particularly in underserved communities where access to education and resources may be limited.
In the future, I plan to pursue a career in forestry where I can work to protect and preserve our natural resources. I want to use what I've overcome to inspire and mentor other first-generation college students, showing them that it's possible to overcome adversity and achieve their dreams. By sharing my story and advocating for change, I hope to make a lasting impact on the world around me.
