Hi, I’m Makayla Luevano, a chemistry student and researcher at UC Irvine with a focus on f-block inorganic and radiochemistry. My work centers on synthesizing and characterizing rare-earth metal complexes to better understand their structure and reactivity, with an eye toward applications in quantum materials and fundamental science.
I conduct independent research in the Evans Group, where I’ve developed over 55 new complexes using air-sensitive techniques, spectroscopy, and X-ray crystallography. I’m also training to become a licensed nuclear reactor operator at UCI’s TRIGA reactor and recently completed a summer program at Lawrence Livermore National Lab.
Outside the lab, I’m passionate about making STEM more inclusive. As a Learning Assistant, I lead discussions and reviews in chemistry courses, helping students build confidence and community. I also serve as treasurer of UCI’s American Nuclear Society chapter, where I’ve helped expand outreach and rebuild student involvement.
I care deeply about both science and equity — and I hope to keep creating space in academia where collaboration, curiosity, and underrepresented voices can thrive.
