I am a sophomore at Tennessee Technological University. I am currently studying Pre-Veterinary Studies. To come to the decision of this was a struggle. I was originally a Pre-vet student, but then I switched to criminal justice. But recently I have decided to switch back to Pre-Veterinary studies due to the fact that I feel more comfortable in the field. Plus with my hearing loss and my other disabilities, it would be better if I didn't go into criminal justice. I was going to minor in Criminal justice but I thought it would overwhelm me.
I have a pretty big hearing loss I wear hearing aids in both ears. The struggle of having hearing loss did not start in college. It started when I was very young since I did not get my hearing aids until my seventh-grade year. This created the problem of not finding many friends throughout school. College was no different it was hard to find friends or people that would judge me for my flaws. I have struggled with the big classrooms and not being able to hear or understand the professor(s). I have also struggled with the fact that some of my professors think that my hearing aids are some sort of way to cheat. If I have a problem and need some help with it my professors are not always the most open. Also times in certain classrooms or settings my hearing aids give me problems. Like if there are too many people in the classroom then it could cause feedback or it's just too loud. Or several times my hearing aids have died and I have not been able to hear. Several times when I express this to my professors they either didn't believe me or just did not care.
I am hoping to become an equine veterinarian or livestock veterinarian. I also want to open up my clinic and be a primary veterinarian for my town. When I was little I wanted to become a small animal vet and work primarily with cats and dogs. But my first semester I started a work-study on the Tennessee tech farm. We primarily work with cattle, sheep, and hogs so working around them so much made me want to pursue a career. Another reason to chose large animals was my junior and senior years of higschool I was committed to FFA and 4-H I raised and showed a hog and 4 sheep throughout the course of 2 years.
