"What do you want to be when you grow up?" This could have been the hardest question I had to answer during high school. Everytime I heard those words I felt uneasy. I knew, and know to this date, my interests: science and math, but I did not know the exact major that would satisfy what I liked. As I grew and learned, I realized I had a deep interest in chemistry and life itself. For this reason, I believe I hit the jackpot when I got accepted into Georgia Institute of Technology to study Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering. As I said before, I am interested in the sciences, but I am also a curious person who is eager to learn and improve the world around me. My major is very broad and the knowledge that I will gain during these years, will enable me to achieve some of my goals as a future professional. As a chemical and biomolecular engineer, I plan on working for a pharmaceutical company to create new and effective pharmaceuticals to improve society's health. A company that I highly admire is Abbott, which I got an internship from, as a freshman, for the summer of 2021.. Not so long ago, I saw my grandfather die, but he would have not stayed alive for eighty seven years, if he would have not consumed the nutritive products from Abbot, made especially for older people. I have a love for senior citizens, and if I work for a company like this one, I would pursue creating pharmaceuticals to improve the life of elderly people. Additionally, the world is constantly changing, and one of the biggest problems we have as a society, to this date, is climate change. Another goal of mine, is to find innovative ways to fight this phenomenon, and hope for a better future for the coming generations. Today, I might not have the complete knowledge to come up with the necessary inventions, but as I go deeper into my major I will have the required skills and experience to think and execute what is not imaginable for me right now. After some years, I would be interested in becoming a scientist for the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, and report the latest information on this world problem. As of now, I have taken part in several activities that have taken me closer to this goal. From the last months of 2019 to the beginning of 2020, I worked with the Environmental Department from Maryland, to come up with recommendations to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 80% by 2027. I worked with members from the county's executive board, as well as with members from non-profit organizations from around the area. I had to exhibit the ideas at an open house, accessible to Maryland residents. I believe experiences like this have taken me closer to my future dreams by providing me with skills and professional exposure. Apart from science, I would like to develop a non-profit organization dedicated to education. I personally believe that education is a key to success, and a well formed instruction can change the life of many. I would like to give greater opportunities to students from countries like Sierra Leone, the country where my father grew up, or other third world countries. I believe every nation has the capacity to grow, and provide professional and employment opportunities to its citizens. My goal with this organization is to avoid brilliant people from flying away from their home countries, which causes more economic growth in the nations that already have the most control in the world. I know that I would not be able to do this alone, and for that reason I have started the conversation with people, who I trust, to achieve this goal. It is evident that this dream is a long term goal, as I first have to obtain my chemical and biomolecular engineering degree. As a nineteen year old woman going on to her twenties, I could not be more excited for the opportunities set in front of me. I am looking forward to the upcoming years, which will strengthen me professionally, academically and personally. In addition, I will better understand how the world functions, and hopefully provide my portion and make a difference in the people’s lives and the environment. My future is a product of my present effort.
