Koehler Family Trades and Engineering Scholarship
Hi, my name is Mahavir Shah, I’m a 22-year-old aspiring electrician from SoCal. The journey that brought me here has been shaped by resilience, adaptability, and a passion for problem-solving. I was born in Alabama, but life has taken me across the country through various challenges and opportunities. At age 10, my parents divorced, and by the time I was 12, we had moved to New Jersey with my dad and two sisters. Over the years, our family moved frequently from New Jersey to Georgia and, at last, California, often because of financial hardships and life’s unpredictability.
An important moment for me was when my dad started an Indian restaurant in 2011-2012. I worked alongside him by helping wire the space, installing lighting, and setting up the kitchen exhaust system. I remember even climbing onto the roof to troubleshoot with the wiring. The experience was challenging and eye-opening, sparking a newfound interest in electrical work. Seeing the restaurant come together was incredibly rewarding. That experience taught me the importance of precision, patience, and problem-solving.
In 2015, a drunk driver hit my dad’s car, leaving him with spine and nerve damage. This accident meant that he could no longer work. In 2016, after many years of separation, my mom reconciled with my dad, and we moved as a family to Georgia for a short time before moving to California in August of 2017. While their reunion brought hope, our journey remained far from easy.
From a young age, I learned to cook, care for my sisters, and eventually take on a full-time job to help support our family in September 2020. During my senior year of high school, I balanced school and a job because of my dad’s injury and his inability to provide. Things became even more complicated when we returned from a family visit to India in early 2020. My mom left again, leaving my dad, my sister, and me to figure things out on our own. We lived with a family friend in Temecula for a few years, but that didn’t last long. By 2022, we found ourselves living in a shelter apartment. And not long after, my sister left for college, and my dad and I were left to rebuild our lives together.
That initial exposure to electrical work in my dad’s restaurant gave me the inpiration to dive deeper into the trade. I started taking on small projects, like fixing appliances and helping friends and family with basic electrical repairs using technology. Each task increased my interest and built my confidence. I love the problem-solving and working with my hands aspect of this work.
My ultimate goal is to specialize in commercial electrical work and, eventually, start my own business. I’m particularly interested in solar setups because they are vital to the industry's future. My background in photography has taught me the value of creativity, adaptability, and attention to detail, all of which I can bring into electrical work. Mistakes are unavoidable, but I view them as opportunities to grow in the field.
Balancing work and life has been difficult, but it has taught me valuable lessons about time management and patience. My dad’s accident and our family’s financial struggles have motivated me to build a stable future for myself and my loved ones.
Receiving this scholarship would help so much. It would represent not just the financial support I'd receive but also the recognition of the hard work I’ve put into overcoming obstacles and pursuing this career. This scholarship, I can take the next step toward achieving my goals and creating a brighter future.
