      Lippey Family Scholarship
January 30, 2026 Lippey Family Scholarship: My name is Maggie Slaughter, and I am in the second semester of my freshman year at George Fox University in Newberg, Oregon. I have wanted to be a nurse since I was quite young and never once thought that my academic challenges would keep me from becoming a nurse, until about the end of the 8th grade, when I realized how much I did not know, could not remember or articulate. I was set up with an IEP (independent education plan) in the third grade because I was behind in reading, spelling, comprehension and math. The IEP program was helpful but, at that time, they did not recognize that there was more to my learning challenges. In the 8th grade, I was tested for ADD (attention deficit disorder, non-hyperactivity) and dyslexia. The diagnosis for the ADD test was positive and the dyslexia testing results were extreme dyslexia. Now having the diagnosis, it was time to figure out what I needed to do differently to learn. I had family that helped me find a way to learn that worked for me. I moved to a Classical Conversations Christian Home School program that has a rigid curriculum and graduated in May 2025 with a 3.2 GPA. I signed up for the resource center at George Fox University where I can access tutoring along with other support to help me complete my four-year degree. I have a heart to serve and as a Registered Nurse, I will be able to serve patients in their healthcare needs. I am determined to graduate in the Spring of 2029 as a Registered Nurse. I was in the foster care system from the time I was in the 7th grade and then the State of Oregon asked my grandmother to be my legal guardian. When I turned 18, I became an independent student and will be a ward of the State until I am 23 years old. My income is a part time job at the college, working about 10hrs per week during the school year. I volunteer for additional shifts when they are available and am applying for summer jobs now to help with my 2026 school expenses. I am so grateful for your generosity in providing scholarships to students. Thank you for considering me for this scholarship. I look forward to hearing back from you.
