Serving my community is not just an act of responsibility; it is a deeply rooted part of who I am and how I define purpose. For me, service is an expression of gratitude, empathy, and solidarity. It is how I honor the sacrifices of those who came before me, uplift those around me, and contribute to the creation of a more just and inclusive world. Through leadership, mentorship, and advocacy, I have found that giving back is not only fulfilling, but essential to building strong, connected, and empowered communities.
Growing up, I witnessed firsthand how collective care and mutual support can make a difference. I saw how community leaders, mentors, and family members showed up for each other, whether through neighborhood drives, after-school programs, or simply offering guidance to the next generation. These experiences taught me early on that no matter how small the action, serving others can leave a lasting impact. That lesson has stayed with me and continues to fuel my commitment to service today.
At Rutgers University, I have been fortunate to continue living out this commitment through my involvement in organizations that center community engagement. As Assistant Secretary and Press & Publicity Chair of the Rutgers–New Brunswick Chapter of the NAACP, I help lead initiatives that address social justice issues, voter education, and student empowerment. From organizing informative campaigns to amplifying marginalized voices on campus, my work with the NAACP has allowed me to be a part of something bigger than myself—creating real dialogue and change through collective action.
In addition to my work with the NAACP, I proudly serve as a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated, an organization rooted in a legacy of sisterhood and service. Through AKA, I participate in community outreach efforts that support underserved populations, promote academic excellence, and encourage civic responsibility. These experiences have deepened my understanding of what intentional service looks like and have connected me with a network of women who are equally committed to uplifting others.
Beyond campus, my internship with Impact Strategies, a political advocacy firm led by Angela Rye, has expanded my capacity to serve on a national level. Contributing to efforts like the collective pardon campaign for Marilyn Mosby allowed me to engage with issues of criminal justice reform and work alongside advocacy organizations and congressional offices. This experience showed me how service can take many forms—from direct action to behind-the-scenes research and communication—and that all of it matters when fighting for equity.
One of the most rewarding aspects of service for me has been mentorship. Through the Paul Robeson Living-Learning Community Big/Little Program, I support fellow students, especially young Black students navigating the challenges of college life. These one-on-one relationships are where I’ve seen the power of service up close—how simply being present, listening, and encouraging someone can change their outlook and strengthen their confidence. For me, mentorship is more than a role—it is a commitment to ensuring that others feel seen, supported, and empowered.
Ultimately, serving my community is important to me because it reflects the kind of world I want to live in—one where everyone can thrive, justice and compassion guide our actions, and no one is left behind. It is through service that I find purpose, connection, and a sense of hope. As I continue my education and pursue a career in journalism and advocacy, I intend to use my voice and platform to serve on an even broader scale. Whether through storytelling, organizing, or mentoring, I will always seek ways to give back, because community is not just where I come from,it is who I am.

As a journalist, I believe storytelling is a powerful tool to inform, connect, and inspire change. Journalism goes beyond reporting facts—it gives voice to those often overlooked and holds those in power accountable. In today’s world, where misinformation spreads quickly, responsible storytelling is more important than ever.
My passion for journalism grew from witnessing how communities like mine are frequently misrepresented or ignored in mainstream media. I realized that many stories go untold, and with that, many truths remain hidden. Through my work, I strive to amplify these voices and share stories that challenge stereotypes and highlight real human experiences.
One project I’m proud of involved reporting on mental health challenges among students on my campus, especially those from marginalized backgrounds. By interviewing students and experts, I helped raise awareness about gaps in support systems. The coverage sparked discussions that led to new initiatives aimed at improving mental health resources for students. This showed me that storytelling doesn’t just inform—it can inspire real change.
I am committed to practicing journalism with integrity, fairness, and empathy. I believe that through thoughtful and ethical storytelling, we can foster understanding and drive social progress. By pursuing a career in investigative journalism focused on social justice, I hope to continue uncovering stories that matter and contribute to a more just and informed world.
This scholarship will help me develop the skills I need to make a meaningful impact through journalism. I am confident that the stories I tell can change the world—one story at a time.
DK Memorial Sports Broadcasting Scholarship
I’ve always believed that sports are more than a game—they are a stage where human stories unfold in real time. Behind every stat line, every buzzer-beater, and every record shattered, there is a story of perseverance, passion, and identity. This is what drew me to Sports Broadcasting and Journalism: the opportunity to tell these stories, especially those that too often go unheard.
Growing up, I admired sports broadcasters who brought the excitement of a game to life, but I rarely saw people who looked like me—Black women—at the forefront of sports media. That lack of representation didn’t discourage me; it motivated me. I knew I wanted to step into a field where I could help reshape what’s considered the norm. I want to be a part of the next wave of voices that make sports journalism more inclusive, representative, and human-centered.
Working with the media platform SPORTSISH was a turning point for me. It was my first real step into the industry, and it opened my eyes to the power of perspective in sports media. At SPORTSISH, I helped create content that wasn’t just informative but engaging and accessible. I learned how to shape narratives, conduct interviews, and communicate with authenticity—skills that made me feel like I belonged in this space. That experience didn’t just confirm my passion; it helped me realize the impact I could have by bringing my unique voice to the field.
As a Black woman, I carry not only my own experiences but also a deep understanding of how identity intersects with sports. So many athletes—especially women of color—face challenges that go beyond the field, and I want to use my platform to elevate those voices. Whether it’s through highlighting the mental health struggles of Black athletes, covering gender inequities in sports coverage, or spotlighting the achievements of young girls breaking barriers, I want my journalism to reflect a broader truth.
The part of this field I’m most passionate about is storytelling—particularly, telling the stories that are often overlooked. I’m not just interested in who won or lost; I’m interested in why it matters. I want to tell the story of the underdog who never gave up, the athlete who uses their platform to create change, or the team that brings its community together. To me, these narratives are what make sports so powerful—and what make journalism so necessary.
Pursuing a career in Sports Journalism isn’t just a professional ambition; it’s a personal mission. I want to create space for new voices, ask the questions others won’t, and leave the industry better than I found it. With continued opportunities, mentorship, and support—like this scholarship—I know I can help shift the culture of sports media, not only by being in the room but by helping others get there too.
Leave A Legacy Always Scholarship
Stories; accounts of imaginary or real people, and events told for entertainment. Stories can portray various emotions and make an impact on a person’s life. And to my Grandmother Loretta Rivera, stories meant the world to her. When she was a 17-year-old girl in the city of Philadelphia, she had dreams and aspirations to write compelling stories to allow people to see her perspective on life. She wanted to travel the world, meet unique people who also had stories to tell, and embrace various cultures. Her pen was endless as ideas flowed from her imagination to blank pieces of paper. As she became older and her family grew, her aspirations never faded away. Every single day she would write entry after entry in so many journals that she has kept over the years.
Every time I had the chance to see her, I was in awe of the stories she told and how much wisdom and charisma she portrayed. For us, that’s how we bonded; constantly talking about the art of journalism in any sense. From hard-hitting politics to local news stories, to feel-good stories, to the never-ending stories of present-day Hollywood. We both found peace in our conversations. There was no sense of time. Sharing these stories was the spark that created my interest in journalism. And when our last conversation came around in the midst of a pandemic, she shared these words with me: “keep writing Madison, your voice is needed in this world.” Soon thereafter, she passed away after her tough fight with lung cancer. Ever since that conversation, I’ve vowed to keep her dreams and aspirations in my work.
“Be your truth, share your truth”; is a saying that I go by when I create my art. Journalism has been a stress reliever and a pastime that I have loved for the longest. Though it is vast, the job is never done as the industry grows and our world is constantly filled with headlines. My journalism career truly started when I was in high school. For three years of my high school career, I had the privilege to be part of a community of writers within the small town of Voorhees, New Jersey. Our collective goal is to share various types of news from around the world with our ever-growing town. I’ve been able to share compelling articles; from protests during the Met Gala, to victories for the families of police brutality, to clubs that highlight cultures in various forms. But there were times when I felt that I wasn’t being acknowledged or even truly being allowed to be my big, black, and bold self. During my senior year, I was one of the top contenders for the editor-in-chief position, but my journey was cut short because my advisors thought my idea of bringing more cultural awareness was “too much”. I can admit, that was a hard message to hear because all my life I have heard the black voices in media silenced, and I often wondered why me too?
Fast forward to my freshman year at Rutgers University, I had the unique chance to work with Angela Rye and a talented cohort of peers in her Professional Development Program! Our initial task was to be fed by the speakers and projects that were given to us, but our services were needed more in an unexpected project. We as a group were tasked with creating a pardon campaign for former State's Attorney for Baltimore, Maryland, Marilyn Mosby. Mosby gained national attention for her role in the prosecution of the police officers involved in the death of Freddie Gray, a case that highlighted issues of police brutality and systemic injustice. Despite her commitment to reform and justice, Mosby faced significant opposition and legal challenges, leading to her own indictment on charges related to perjury and making false mortgage applications (which involved taking HER OWN MONEY FROM THE STATE). The charges, which many viewed as politically motivated, underscored the intense scrutiny and obstacles Black women in positions of power often face.
Our group’s mission was to build a comprehensive campaign advocating for Mosby’s pardon, highlighting her contributions to the fight for justice and the potential motivations behind the charges against her. We delved into extensive research, examining the details of her case, her career accomplishments, and the broader socio-political context, and even submitting a pardon letter and acknowledgment to President Biden. And through our many efforts including social media posts, PR announcements, and petitions, we were able to watch history as her 40 year sentence was lessened to 12 months of home detention, three years of supervised release, and 100 hours of community service.
The experience reinforced my belief in the media's potential to drive social change and inspired me to use my skills to spotlight issues of injustice and promote equity. By crafting compelling narratives and engaging the community, I realized how impactful storytelling could be in mobilizing support and effecting real change. This project fueled my desire to pursue a career in media where I can continue to advocate for justice, uplift marginalized voices, and contribute to creating a more inclusive and equitable society.
I hope to expand on my craft and continue to keep my grandmother’s dreams and aspirations alive. I will strive to create an impact not only in my school community but to anyone who will read or listen. Thank you for taking the time to read my story, I hope it makes an impact on you!
Book Lovers Scholarship
If I could wave a magic wand and place a single book into the hands of every person around the globe, it would be Zora Neale Hurston's "Their Eyes Were Watching God." Published in 1937, this novel is a seminal work in African American literature and an essential exploration of identity, independence, and self-realization. "Their Eyes Were Watching God" tells the story of Janie Crawford, an African American woman in the early 20th century, as she navigates her way through life, love, and personal growth.
Through Janie’s journey, Hurston captures the struggles and triumphs of a Black woman seeking to find her voice and assert her independence in a society that often seeks to silence her. One of the key reasons for selecting this book is Hurston’s masterful use of dialect and vivid storytelling, which bring to life the rich cultural heritage of African American communities in the South. Her portrayal of Janie's relationships and experiences is both deeply personal and universally resonant, providing readers with an intimate look at the complexities of race, gender, and societal expectations. Hurston’s novel is not just a tale of individual empowerment; it is also a profound commentary on the human condition.
The themes of love, loss, resilience, and self-discovery are presented in a way that transcends time and place, making the book relevant to readers from diverse backgrounds and cultures. Hurston’s exploration of the tension between societal norms and personal desires speaks to the universal quest for authenticity and fulfillment. Moreover, "Their Eyes Were Watching God" offers a powerful counter-narrative to the often one-dimensional portrayals of African American life in literature. Hurston’s nuanced depiction of Black life, with its joys, sorrows, and complexities, challenges stereotypes and broadens readers’ understanding of the African American experience.
By encouraging everyone to read this book, we can foster greater empathy and appreciation for the richness of African American culture and the resilience of those who navigate and challenge oppressive systems. "Their Eyes Were Watching God" is a timeless work that inspires readers to reflect on their own journeys towards self-discovery and to honor the diverse voices that contribute to our shared humanity.

My story is one of resilience, and faith has been the unwavering anchor that has guided me through tumultuous seas toward the shores of success.
For my whole life, I have grown up in the church. When your father is a preacher, that is the only thing you can do. I am considered to be a preacher's kid (a PK). This role in my life was sometimes difficult as you're always being watched by the people in your congregation and their expectations are extremely high! You are also expected to be involved in various activities and ministries, but I always found this as an opportunity to help my community!
The challenges I faced were not only external but internal as well. Doubt and insecurity threatened to derail my dreams, but my faith served as a constant reminder of my inherent worth and the limitless possibilities that lay ahead. It propelled me to defy societal expectations and pursue my aspirations with a tenacity fueled by the conviction that I was destined for greatness.

Small victories became stepping stones, and with each stride, my confidence grew. Academic achievements, personal growth, and professional milestones began to shape the narrative of my journey, each chapter enriched by the presence of faith as a guiding force.
In planning for the future, my faith remains a cornerstone, a compass that directs my path toward greater heights. The lessons learned from overcoming challenges and celebrating triumphs are woven into the fabric of my faith, shaping a vision that extends beyond personal success. I aspire to utilize my experiences and the guiding light of my faith to uplift others, to be a source of inspiration for those navigating their own storms.
As I embark on this opportunity, I carry with me the understanding that success is not solely measured by personal achievements but also by the positive impact one can have on the lives of others. My faith compels me to approach challenges not as obstacles but as opportunities for growth, and to view triumphs not as individual victories but as collective celebrations of human resilience.
The future holds the promise of new challenges and uncharted territories, but with faith as my compass, I navigate forward with confidence. My journey, marked by trials and triumphs, has been a testament to the transformative power of unwavering belief. In reaching even greater heights, I envision myself not only achieving personal success but also becoming a beacon of hope for those who may be facing their own storms.

With faith as my guiding force, I embark on this opportunity with gratitude for the past, determination in the present, and a vision of a future where the light of unwavering belief continues to shine brightly.
Zendaya Superfan Scholarship
Zendaya is truly a force to be reckoned with in the entertainment industry, seamlessly navigating through various realms such as fashion, acting, singing, and activism. While each facet of her multifaceted career is noteworthy, it is her activism that stands out to me the most.
In the glitzy world of Hollywood, where celebrities often focus on their careers and personal lives, Zendaya's commitment to activism is both refreshing and commendable. She uses her platform not only to entertain but also to address pressing social issues and advocate for positive change. This level of social consciousness is something that sets her apart and garners my utmost admiration.
Zendaya's activism is multifaceted in itself. One of the aspects that I find particularly inspiring is her dedication to promoting inclusivity and diversity in the entertainment industry. She actively challenges the status quo and advocates for equal representation of all races and ethnicities. In an industry that has historically struggled with diversity, Zendaya's outspoken stance is a beacon of hope for aspiring artists from underrepresented backgrounds.
Furthermore, Zendaya tackles important societal issues head-on. She addresses topics such as racial inequality, gender discrimination, and mental health, using her influence to amplify marginalized voices. Her willingness to engage in difficult conversations and raise awareness on these matters is both courageous and impactful. In an era where social media can be a platform for superficiality, Zendaya uses her online presence as a tool for education and advocacy.
Moreover, Zendaya's activism extends beyond words to tangible actions. She actively supports various charitable organizations and causes, using her financial resources to make a positive impact. This commitment to philanthropy demonstrates a genuine desire to contribute to the betterment of society, showcasing that she not only talks the talk but also walks the walk.
Zendaya's activism is a testament to her understanding of the power and responsibility that comes with fame. Instead of merely basking in the glamour of Hollywood, she leverages her celebrity status to bring attention to issues that matter. This conscious effort to make a difference resonates with me because it goes beyond the superficiality often associated with the entertainment industry.
In conclusion, while Zendaya's prowess in fashion, acting, and singing is undeniable, it is her activism that I admire the most. Her commitment to inclusivity, social justice, and philanthropy showcases a depth of character that goes beyond the silver screen or the glamorous red carpet. Zendaya is not just a talented artist; she is a passionate advocate for positive change, using her influence to make the world a better place. In a world that can often be blinded by fame and fortune, Zendaya's dedication to activism is a shining example of the transformative power of celebrity influence.
