Studying abroad in northern Italy was more than just a semester of academic exploration; it was a transformative journey that helped me discover my true self, gain independence, and navigate the challenges of solo travel. Italy, with its rich history, vibrant culture, and warm people, became the backdrop against which my personal growth unfolded. Living in a foreign country challenged me in ways I never imagined. From the moment I arrived, I was immersed in a new language, unfamiliar customs, and different social norms when navigating through train stations to the small city of Vicenza that became my home for four months. Initially, these differences felt overwhelming, but as time passed, I learned to adapt and embrace them. Through daily interactions with locals whom I became very close with, I gained a deeper understanding of cultural diversity and developed a newfound appreciation for global perspectives, just by ordering a cappuccino and brioche every morning. One of the most significant lessons I learned during my semester abroad was the importance of independence. Navigating life in Italy required me to step out of my comfort zone and take initiative in every aspect of my daily routine. From grocery shopping to traveling to diverse countries throughout Europe, I became self-reliant and confident in my ability to handle challenges on my own. This newfound independence not only empowered me during my time in Italy but also transcended into other areas of my life, shaping my decision-making process and fostering a sense of self-assurance as I graduate with my Bachelor's of Design in Architecture from the University of Florida and will be pursuing my Master of Architecture at the University of Virginia this upcoming fall. Perhaps the most rewarding aspect of my semester abroad was the opportunity to travel solo to other countries. Despite the initial apprehension and logistical challenges, I embarked on journeys to explore neighboring cities and countries, from Edinburg, Scotland to Venice, Italy. I cherish the friends I have made along the way, as I still keep in contact with people from Austria to London. Traveling alone allowed me to fully immerse myself in new cultures, forge meaningful connections with people from all walks of life, and create memories that will last a lifetime. In hindsight, my semester abroad in Vicenza, Italy was a pivotal chapter in my personal journey. It not only broadened my academic horizons, as I had the privilege of studying architecture in Italy, but also provided the perfect environment for self-discovery and personal growth. Through embracing new experiences, gaining independence, and overcoming challenges, I not only found who I was but also gained the confidence to navigate the world on my own terms. Italy will always hold a special place in my heart as the catalyst for my transformation and the beginning of a lifelong love for travel and exploration.
