My mother planned to have a natural birth when she had my younger brother; however, after praying to God, he showed her that she would have to take a different path. Brady’s shoulder blade was lodged into the birth canal during the birthing process, so he had to break Brady’s collarbone to get him out. Fortunately, that worked however he was unable to breathe or move his left arm resulting from 8-10 broken ribs. The doctors were able to get him to breathe, but could not determine why he couldn't move his arm. They decided to rush Brady to the NICU then a specialist. The doctor immediately knew that Brady was unable to move his arm because he had Erb’s Palsy. The specialist scheduled Brady’s first surgery at 6 months. Brady had 10% mobility in his left arm before the surgery and after he had almost 65%. He had to have additional surgeries when he was 2 and 5 years old. Unassisted, Brady is unable to raise his arm above his head. Brady is an inspiration to not only me, but to everyone around him. Individuals often underestimate him and assume that he is unable to compete as well as everyone else; however he works hard in every aspect of his life to prove them wrong. Brady inspires individuals to not make excuses for their circumstances, but to overcome and rise to the challenge. Individuals often do not give Brady a chance to prove himself because all they see is his disability, however what they do not see is how much time and effort Brady puts in everyday to be just as good if not better than individuals around him. My photographs are meant to showcase Brady’s lifelong struggles with individuals who told him that he could not make it and how he has overcome these struggles to prove that his disability gives him power to succeed in life. In the first set of photos, Brady is covered in words of hate and discouragement. This is meant to simulate individuals who told him he was different and how it weighed him down in the past. The second set of photos showcases how he overcame prejudice and how his disability gives him power to inspire. Brady is an inspiration in our community because he never stops trying to fulfill his dreams and prove that he is able to succeed.
