    Lewis Ohana Scholarship
    1. How would receiving this scholarship help you achieve your educational goals? Receiving this scholarship would be a life-changing opportunity that would allow me to continue pursuing my nursing degree without the constant stress of financial strain. As a single 23-year-old woman paying for school entirely on my own, I face daily decisions between working extra hours and dedicating time to my studies. Financial support would allow me to fully immerse myself in the rigorous coursework required to become a nurse, especially in clinically intensive programs like pathophysiology, pharmacology, and community health nursing. These courses are essential to preparing me for the challenges of real-world patient care. With this scholarship, I would be able to focus more on academic excellence and clinical competence, rather than how I’ll afford next semester’s tuition or books. Ultimately, this support brings me closer to achieving my dream of becoming a compassionate, skilled nurse—one who truly makes a difference in her patients’ lives. 2. What adversities have you faced in your life? I have faced personal and emotional challenges that have profoundly shaped my journey into nursing. Losing my grandfather to liver cancer at a young age devastated my family, especially my mother. Watching her grieve left a lasting impression on me, and I felt compelled to take care of her in every way I could. Over the years, my mother developed several chronic illnesses—hypertension, type 2 diabetes, and NASH disease. I stepped in as her primary support, helping manage her medications, advocating for her in medical appointments, and encouraging her to maintain a healthy lifestyle. It was a heavy responsibility to take on while also trying to build my own future, especially without financial or emotional support from others. These experiences not only sparked my passion for healthcare but also showed me the resilience I didn’t know I had. They reinforced my commitment to nursing and helped me find purpose in adversity. 3. Where do you envision yourself in five years? In five years, I envision myself working as a registered nurse in a hospital or community health setting, specializing in chronic disease management or liver and metabolic disorders—areas inspired by my mother’s health journey. I hope to become a trusted advocate for patients who, like my mom, may feel unheard or overwhelmed in the healthcare system. I also plan to pursue additional certifications in patient education and nutrition so I can empower individuals to take control of their own health. Beyond clinical work, I want to give back to my community by participating in outreach programs that promote preventive care and wellness education in underserved areas. Personally, I hope to be growing not just as a nurse, but as a leader and mentor—someone younger students and aspiring nurses can look up to, especially those who have faced struggles similar to mine. My long-term goal is to become a nurse practitioner, continuing to build a career rooted in empathy, advocacy, and evidence-based care.
    Wieland Nurse Appreciation Scholarship
From a young age, I understood what it meant to love someone through illness. I witnessed the heartbreak, the helplessness, and the strength it takes to stand beside someone when their health is slipping away. My desire to become a nurse didn’t come from a textbook or a classroom, it was born in my home, through love, loss, and the quiet moments of caregiving that changed my life. My maternal grandfather was the heart of our family. He passed away from liver cancer at just 64 years old. His death was devastating, not only for me, but especially for my mother. Watching her lose her father was one of the most painful experiences of my life. It broke her spirit in ways I couldn’t fully understand at the time. I remember feeling powerless. I wanted so badly to help, to ease her pain, to keep her safe, so I made a promise to myself that I would do everything I could to protect her health and well-being. That promise would define the years to come. As I grew older, my mother began facing serious health problems of her own. She was diagnosed with hypertension, type 2 diabetes, and NASH disease, a progressive and often silent liver condition. As her conditions progressed, I quietly stepped into the role of caregiver. I wasn’t a medical professional. I was just a daughter who refused to let her mom go through it alone. I took it upon myself to learn everything I could. I researched her diagnoses, learned the names and side effects of her medications, and ensured she took them properly. I kept track of her appointments, helped her make healthier food choices, and worked with her on staying at a healthy weight. But most importantly, I became her advocate. When she was too overwhelmed to ask questions or push for answers, I was the voice that spoke up for her. I made sure she was heard. That experience sparked something in me. I found myself fascinated by medicine, nutrition, and the human body. I saw how small changes in daily routines could make life-altering differences. I learned how healthcare isn’t just about pills and diagnoses, it’s about connection, trust, and compassion. My mother needed someone who truly cared, and I realized that’s what I want to be for others. Nursing, to me, is not just a profession, it’s my calling. I want to be the person who stands beside patients and their families during their hardest days. I want to bring not just medical knowledge, but empathy and strength to the bedside. I want to be a nurse who listens deeply, advocates fiercely, and cares genuinely, just as I did for my mom. Today, I am a 23-year-old single woman working hard to get through nursing school. I don’t have outside financial help or a safety net. Every step I take is fueled by determination, resilience, and a deep-rooted purpose. Scholarships like this one make a real difference for students like me. They give us the chance to keep going, to carry our stories forward into the lives we’ll one day touch. My journey began with a promise to my mother. And now, with the help of your support, I’m ready to carry that promise into a career where I can make a meaningful impact on others, just as I did for the person who means the most to me.
