The number of people who would say that either their mother or father have impacted their lives is astronomical; it almost feels like a simple and short-minded answer to most. However, to me, it is the most honest answer I can give. Since a young age, I have seen my mother struggle. Whether that be from having to take care of a diabetic husband to having to deal with a diagnosis of ovarian cancer after losing her sister and one of her cousins to cancer, Or even having to take care of herself from the age of sixteen with two children and an abusive husband. Despite this, my mother has always continued to be empathetic and determined through her hardships.  Seeing this and being taught these values impacted me greatly. My mother has always made sure to instill the importance of always pushing for getting people all the help they can get, even if that means working overtime or putting your own wants and needs aside. The qualities of empathy and the ability to remain determined are outrageously important to have, whether you’re going into law enforcement or not. However, for me, I find that these are the qualities that I’ve adopted in order to make the deepest impact in my community through law enforcement. In the BIPOC community, victims of femicide and rape are often overlooked, and the cases and victims are not treated with enough care. That is something I need to change, and I will change it. Using the qualities that my mother has instilled in me, I will push for more coverage of the various cases of femicide and rape, especially for victims that are part of the BIPOC community. I will help to improve the coverage and vigilance that goes into reviewing these cases, whether they be cold cases or new cases. It is important to have a certain amount of empathy when communicating with the victim’s family, to understand a family’s concerns, and to listen to their needs. This can create a safer environment, improve victim advocacy, make a case go smoother, and even help to solve a case. Empathy is what’s needed when handling cases that are more sensitive, especially those of rape. Especially when those cases can go cold or the perpetrator could get away with it due to a lack of evidence. However, that is where determination comes in. No matter how difficult a case may appear, you should always remain determined for the victim and their family. You should always strive for justice and catch the perpetrator. My mother and her displays of empathy and determination have helped to craft and push the importance of caring for others and doing all that you can for others into my own morals. I am determined to assist my community and make a difference in the cases of femicide and rape, to bring more advocacy, and provide comfort to the victims and their families.
