Growing up as a young Black woman in today’s world has not been easy. In my community, I have seen firsthand how the absence of mentorship, leadership, and a strong emphasis on education can limit the potential of young girls who are capable of so much more. Black women and other people of color are often overlooked, counted out, and discouraged from pursuing careers outside of entertainment or athletics. These realities motivated me to seek opportunities that would not only shape my own future, but allow me to give back and uplift others. My passion for service and leadership was deeply influenced by my parents, who instilled in me the importance of knowing my worth and believing in my ability to succeed. At a young age, they enrolled me in a community-based leadership and service program called LEAD #LikeAGirl, a selective initiative that accepts only fifteen young women each year. Through this program, I was exposed to workshops focused on self-esteem, healthy living, civic engagement, and educational empowerment. However, what made LEAD #LikeAGirl especially impactful was its emphasis on community service and mentorship. Throughout the nine-month program, we were not only taught how to lead, but expected to serve. We participated in community outreach initiatives centered on empowering young girls of color, volunteering at local events, and engaging in discussions about social responsibility. We worked collectively to create safe spaces where young women could express themselves, learn about their identities, and envision futures beyond the limitations society often places on them. Serving in this capacity allowed me to see how intentional mentorship can change the trajectory of a young person’s life. By the time I graduated from LEAD #LikeAGirl, I emerged with a renewed sense of confidence, responsibility, and purpose. I understood that leadership is rooted in service and that true impact comes from lifting others as you climb. This experience strengthened my desire to pursue a career in nursing, where I hope to address disparities and stigmas surrounding Black people and people of color in healthcare and medicine. As I continue my academic and professional journey, I remain committed to serving others and creating spaces where young women feel seen, supported, and empowered. Receiving this scholarship would allow me to continue pursuing my educational goals with greater confidence and fewer financial burdens. As I work toward earning my degree and preparing for medical school, this support would help cover the costs of tuition, textbooks, educational materials, and other essential expenses. More importantly, it would allow me to devote more time to my academics, leadership roles, and community service rather than worrying about financial obstacles. This scholarship is an investment not only in my education but also in my ability to become a compassionate healthcare professional who will use her knowledge and experiences to make a meaningful difference in underserved communities.
