I am pursuing my dream of becoming a compassionate healthcare professional.  I have overcome many obstacles to follow that dream. Going into my freshman year of high school my family lost our home to a fire. During my sophomore, my grandfather passed away. In my junior and senior years, the pandemic hit. I have always loved to read. I started reading at three and loved snuggling up with a pile of books. When I was in second grade I was reading a book called, "A Bad Case of Stripes ". We were supposed to start math , but I couldn't put down my book. I hid behind my desk and kept reading. Unfortunately the teacher caught me and she called my mom. When my mom picked me up from school she had bought me the book. I was so excited because I could read it over and over. What I liked then and what I like now was what the book was about. It was about a girl who was afraid to tell people she liked lima beans, and the more she denied it the more Stripes she got. When she finally was brave and not afraid to say what she liked the Stripes went away. I think this is a very important lesson to be confident in yourself and be passionate about your individual differences it is what makes us individuals. The message in this book is simple, but I think it pertains to people of all ages. People are like snowflakes no two are the same, we should embrace this ideal. We are always growing and evolving spiritually and professionally. Numerous books have shaped me. To me that is the joy of reading. There is always a book that is pivotal to that precise point in time. The first time that I was in trouble at school was in the second grade. I was reading a book called, A Bad Case of Stripes. Who doesn't love Disney! All the characters are relatable in some way to each of us at some point in our lives. When I watch movies now as young adult I see so much more than when I was younger. At this point in my life I most identify with the movie Princess and the frog. Tiana had dreams of opening her own restaurant. She was working hard and saving to make her dream a reality. My key to keep a healthy balance is to be mindful. I keep a set schedule on my classes and homework times. I have a set schedule on hours I work. I also make sure I set aside "me time " to help me relax. I sometimes take walks after work or school. I also spend time talking to my family or friends to help unwind. I make sure that I eat all my meals and that I eat plenty vegetables. I reward myself with coffee or snacks, not eating them at every meal. I believe that I should be able to set an example since I am going to be a health care worker. I know I have to treat my body and mind well in order to be at my best for my studies and work. I have always loved all the seasons in Ohio. I love to hike or bike ride at all the beautiful parks in the area. This is great exercise and great for relaxing. Music is my passion. It speaks its language to people on so many different levels. It takes you through all of life ups, downs and special moments. I attended Chardon High School and I was a member of the symphonic band. I could come to school in a bad mood and then we would begin to play and pretty soon the music transformed my mood. The people in band were more creative, compassionate and good natured. I believe music helped create a special bond between us. In band I learned so many life lessons. You have to practice and study your part. The band is only as good as its worst player. When I was a freshman the senior players helped and taught me. I passed on this tradition when I was a senior. The most significant thing I have learned is how to be resilient. The pandemic brought changes to every facet of my life. In an instant I was going to school in my home on a computer. My parents were working from home. There were no activities dances, concerts and sports events. I missed seeing my grandparents that passed away. In order to resume some kind of normalcy we social distanced and wore mask. Those are some of the bad things, but there were good things. Seeing more neighbors walking down the street. Planting a garden and spending time with family. Doing my school work outdoors and the best baking all the time. Things I normally don't take time to do. Also, I believe it would be much better if they also have centers for people that need transplants and amputations instead of going to the hospital to get the procedure done. If possible, doctors can also visit homes and give good quality care for those who can not move as well as others at the same price given to other patients. They have the right to have access to any way they want to be cared for. Whether at a clinic, a doctor's office, or in the comfort of their own home, they will get equal care as they would in a hospital. There is no one as close to me as my twin brother. We do not have to say one word and we know what the one is thinking or feeling. I listen when he just needs to talk. I have always been a quiet and shy person. They say silent waters run deep. In my case this is very true. Like many freshman in high school I went through a tough transition. Personally I was nervous about school my grandfather was ill. My world was upside down. My grades suffered. I kept studying hard I knew I wanted to go to college. I knew I wanted to be in healthcare. I wanted to help people like my grandfather. When I finally was in my senior year the guidance counselor would not let me take chemistry because of grades in my freshman year. My mother demanded I get the chance to try she told she believed in me. I surprised everyone I did well. This year in college I have loved all my classes and professors. I am so proud of being persistent and following my dreams. I would like to thank you for giving me the opportunity to apply for this scholarship and for believing in my education. The world is full of so many problems right now pandemic, war violence the list goes on and on. I think the simple answer is something I learned in kindergarten stop, look and listen. Rather than chaos, everyone talking over each other. If we communicate and listen to each others ideas and work together many problems could be solved. I think people need to put themselves in the other person’s shoes. They need that perspective in order to make better decisions. I see this with politics our leaders have lost touch with voters. They are not going through their hardships. They are not in the same social class. They talk but do not listen to each other. They only try blame each other. Work, college, finals the list goes on and on. The stress is unimaginable sometimes but I have a few tricks to keep me cool through it all. Sometimes I just spend time outdoors and just being in nature can help me unwind. Other times when I and anxious I talk to my family or friends they are my safety net. Everybody needs to unwind and recharge. For me I love to be outdoors, in nature. I love riding my bike on bike trails. Walking in the woods or a simple campfire in my backyard. My family always went camping while I was growing up and those are some of my fondest memories. We met new people. Stayed at different state parks and went to area attractions. When I m out in nature I love just listening to birds, watching animals or watching the sunset on the water, these things are very soothing. I want to be able to take care of the small town people that need help near their homes. Many people have bad diseases or have life-threatening injuries they are going through. They can start developing new life-threatening problems that can be deadly. Many people live in small towns or suburbs, and some of them cannot afford healthcare. Healthcare needs become affordable. I believe patients are paying for their medical care, but more importantly for understanding and compassion in taking care of them, knowing someone deeply cares is there for them. These skills that I will learn will help everyone in the future. You are giving that person and their family a chance at living life and making memories. There is a great need for for state of the art facilities in small communities. I would like to work at a clinic in a small community taking care of my friends and neighbors, so that I can give back to the community in which I live. Personally, I learned about health care watching my grandparents go through terminal illness. They not only struggled with their illnesses. They struggled with the many different doctors, hospitals, and insurance problems. They were very ill and had to be driven long distances for treatments. I think clinics need to be in all small towns. I think there should be mobile health care units. So that doctor's could take care of people in their homes. Then people could recuperate in the comfort of their own home with the people they love. This would help people cure faster and more comfortably. I don't think insurance should limit therapy or nurses visits, this should be done by need. How this scholarship is going to help me. In order to reach my goals I need to concentrate on my studies. Having this scholarship would help so that I would not be worrying about how to pay for tuition. Also, it would help with paying for uniforms, books, supplies and fees. My personal story is not being able to visit both of my grandmother's and then having them both pass away. This all happened while I was in my junior and senior year. Not being able to go to school have prom or graduation. These are milestones and memories you can't replace. My grandmother taught me many things, and one of the most important things was with optimism you can solve any problem and deal with any situation. Everyone has a day where they simply need a hug, or someone to listen to them, or to just simply say everything will be alright. That is how I show love to my family and friends. To live a long and healthy comes down to one word "balance". It seems very simple, but we all know in our hectic world that you must be mindful to keep your life balanced. For myself I need the following food, rest, work and of course love and laughter. Sounds simple but when life pulls you in so many directions it definitely isn't. I think one good thing covid19 taught us was simple things matter. People were out in their yards more. They spent more family time together. You also realize not to take anything or anyone for granted. The world changed so quickly. But thankfully I kept my balance. This might not be the secret to a long life, but I believe it is the secret to the best life can be. I was blessed being born with my best friend. He is my twin brother. There is no person that understands who I am like him. We know all our secrets, dreams and jokes. We don't have to speak and the other knows the others thoughts. I am not saying we don't disagree, but we always make up. I believe the most important part of our friendship is that we always encourage each other. Although sometimes this encouragement landed us in trouble, just kidding. Most of the time I know he will be cheering me on. We both have separate friendships. The nothing as deep as we share. A friend will hurt when you hurt. A friend will give you tough love when you need it. Most importantly a friend will listen. I was so lucky to be born with a friend that has all of that. Self care is very important to me, between work, school and friends and family I need to recharge. Somethings I do to relax are prayer, sitting down watching a movie with a big bowl of popcorn or just listening to some music. I learned about Self care in high school psychology. I believe going into the medical field you need to understand self care not only for yourself but also your patients. Growth mindset was stressed daily in my high school. We read books, had discussions. It was something our principal talked about often. In my junior year covid19 hit. It turned the world upside down. You couldn't go to school, see friends, have activities. We pulled together as a community and I realized how important my growth mindset was going to be. When we needed to learned from home we adjusted and found out things about our teachers and friends. When we couldn't have dances together we had them over social media. I learned that no matter what the circumstances you could find ways to adjust. I believe that is the most important lesson anyone can learn. As my grandfather always said, "if there is a will there's a way. " That is what I truly believe. Thank you for giving me the opportunity to receive this scholarship. My goal in life is to care for and cure people. This is my passion. I also love technology which lead me to choose to become a Radiographer and pursue a Bachelors in Allied Health. Care has dramatically improved over the years. New types of treatments and higher survival rates have become affordable and successful for many people. However, with COVID-19, our health and our well-being are more important than ever. People that have preexisting conditions are more at risk for death. Now that vaccines exist, we can live our normal lives, but others are still suffering with many life-threatening diseases. As a future health care worker, I have many ideas that will help change the way we view health care and how to make it affordable and better for those who struggle with finances and their overall health. These can help change the world we live in and make it better than ever. Technology has always been a knack for many people in my generation, and in the healthcare industry, it is no different. Whether it is a simple heart monitor or a complicated MRI, technology and healthcare can really go hand in hand. We are now going into a world where technology is more detailed and faster. It would be better if more cancer treatment centers and other long-term care centers were built in every city. They should give every individual, rich or poor, an equal pay for their treatment and appointments. It would give them the quick care they need and it would be beneficial not only to the doctor, but to the patient who needs help the most. Also, I believe it would be much better if they also have centers for people that need transplants and amputations instead of going to the hospital to get the procedure done. Doctors should also train people to do their own procedures at home because they can take care of themselves fine if they know what to do. If possible, doctors can also visit homes and give good quality care for those who can move as well as others at the same price given to other patients in need of any kind of care. They have the right to have access to choose how want to be cared for. Whether at a clinic, a doctor's office, or in the comfort of their home, they will get equal care. These skills and advancements will help everyone out in the future. Patient's lives come first and I will be prepared to meet the challenges.
