My name is Madelyn Pate and I am a current Aptos High Senior. I am undecided on where I want to go to college in the fall, but I know for sure I will continue to learn and study about the things I love. WinnerPerforming arts have always been a huge part of my life, helping shape me into the person I am today. Even though I applied to colleges for the fall as a criminal justice major, I intend to take a double major in music wherever I go. Music and Theater have taught me a lot about self expression, advocacy and community, helping me understand how I can use my voice to fit into a bigger picture, and share messages and stories that connect different audiences.
In studying music in college, I want to find a community. Starting college will be a big change in my life as I move away from home, but music and arts have been a consistent part of my life, and one that I know I will keep around. In addition to all the classes that come with a music major, I have been looking into theater clubs and choir clubs at my top colleges to join when I start in the fall, so I can stay actively engaged with creating art and collaborating with peers.
In the long run, I want to work professionally as a lawyer advocating for change. Though I know it'll be my love for performing arts that make this possible. Music and theater have taught me empathy and allowed me to connect with people in ways only existing through the arts. Empathy is crucial for advocacy, and I know arts are the best way to reach grand audiences and bring people together.
