Girl in Velvet is one of the first songs I've ever written. I started writing songs just last year, and immediately, I had so many creative thoughts and emotions that poured out of me. This song is a tribute to a close friend. She struggled with depression and mental health throughout most of high school. The lyrics tell the story of a girl who keeps ending up surrounded in her own darkness despite her best efforts to light her own path. Everyone around her remembers the vibrant girl she used to be. Although the people notice her growing darkness, they dismiss it as beautiful without diving any deeper. Girl in Velvet was inspired by this friend, but I believe it also reflects my own experiences with the tribulations of growing up. There are so many struggles that come with growing up, from maintaining friendships to finding your own sense of identity in the midst of a chaotic and confusing world. As a university student, I am studying psychology and music. Through I primarily have a background in Classical music and music theory as a flutist, I love extending my musical thoughts into the creativity of writing songs. Although I am not a professional and typically record my songs in voice memos, I've been inspired by young artists today who take a narrative and personal approach into their lyricism, which is reflected by the personal story I hope to convey through Girl in Velvet. As a double major, I am often asked how I plan to combine my majors, music and psychology. Music therapist is always suggested to me, but I believe that song writing reflects both musical ability and psychology as it requires the awareness to create deep, relatable, and meaningful stories about the human experience.
