Barbie Dream House Scholarship
My Barbie Dream House is the place I am the most happy. I walk in through the pink stained-glass doors onto a beautiful checkered marble floor (pink and white, of course). I look to the left, and my mom is working in her spacious office with many windows, looking out at the beautiful Colorado mountain view. Then, I walk into the large kitchen where my dad is cooking spaghetti for my family, our favorite meal. Later I will start to bake some pink cupcakes! A large kitchen table has many seats for my family and friends who want to come and spend time with us. I turn left and walk into the library, with hundreds of books and reading nooks to read in. I walk up a spiral staircase into my bedroom, which has a couch to sit on and watch movies with my friends, a large bed, a walk-in closet where I can test out my outfits on a screen, and floor-to-ceiling windows looking out on the gigantic backyard. I see my brothers outside playing pickleball on the pink pickleball court next to the pool and tire swing.
I walk into my brothers' room, a cavernous space they use to play knee hockey with a built-in trampoline. They have a slide that takes them down to the first floor and then down to the basement, where our family movie room is, and we can all watch movies and relax together. The basement also has the gym, with our pink stationary bike, pink treadmill, pink weights, and pink yoga mats, and a small room with a skiing simulator using virtual reality, so we can ski whenever we want, even during summertime. The basement has floor-to-ceiling windows, where we can walk out to the backyard porch, which has a firepit and pink Adirondack chairs.
The Barbie Dream House is powered by a windmill, which is part of a mini-golf course in the yard, so it doesn't use any fossil fuels. It is located in Silverthorne, Colorado, close to the Acorn Creek Trail, so we can go on a quick hike and can drive to go skiing in the winter. It is a gambrel-style house painted white with pink trim and detailing. There are no neighbors or roads near us, so there is no noise or light pollution, and we have a clear view of the beautiful mountains and stars. My Barbie Dream House is where I can spend quality time with my family and friends because I love my family more than anything else, and they are the most important thing in my life. No matter how fancy a Barbie Dream House I have, the only thing that will make it complete is the people I care about.
International Studies Scholarship
The study of other cultures provides us with a contrast to our own culture. When we compare our culture to others, the differences give us inspiration and insight into ourselves and our culture. We realize things that we have or have not been doing that are fascinating when we take a step back. My family is hosting an exchange student from French Guyana named Léonie. Every day I am fascinated by what she has to say. She is awed by things she sees in America that I do not look at twice. Not only does it bring insight to Americans to visit other countries, it also brings us insight to explain our culture to others. Since Léonie has been here, I feel as though I look at everything in a different way. We recently went to the bowling alley, and Léonie's jaw dropped at the sheer size of 15 bowling alleys in a row. I had not considered how enormous that must seem to someone who does not have bowling in her home country. In this encounter, my worldview 'bounced off' Léonie's. When we go to the grocery store, and there are hundreds of different bottles of juice in every flavor, she is overwhelmed by the variety, but it was the first time I had considered that is not the case in other places. We do not know how our culture compares to others until we study them.
I am an avid reader, I often read a book or more every couple of days, but no matter how much one reads about other cultures, there is an understanding which can only be obtained by experiencing something in reality, which is what we gain by global exploration. The more Americans explore, the more ideas they can bring back to the United States, ideas that make our country a better place, and the more we can appreciate the culture we have in the United States without taking it for granted. In Mark Twain's words, "Experience is the enemy of ignorance, and travel is a gateway to understanding the world." Studying other cultures contrasts our culture and helps provide us with a more precise worldview. It is necessary for any society and helps to combat ignorance. The value of global exploration is immeasurable. The United States could only be at a fraction of where it is today technologically, culturally, socially, or politically without exploring other nations, learning from their mistakes, and using their advances to help advance our society. Today, we live in a fully connected world, and studying other cultures is imperative to make the United States and the world at large a better place.
