Journalism is the key to a healthy democracy. Democracy only works when all groups of people are represented accurately and equally. These groups as a part of the general public need to be connected and aware of the challenges their society faces, and journalism is the best way to maintain a fair connection. I believe in the longevity of journalism. Many criticize the field, saying its outdated or that its dying. In the United States, public trust in journalism is low. But Journalism persists. Among my peers I have seen a consistent devotion to the core Journalistic principals. I began working for my school and community newspaper, The Eastern Echo, at the beginning of this semester as a copyeditor. At our weekly meetings there is such a prominent and profound care for our community that it has inspired me to take on a more involved role in the organization. The articles we write inform and represent our local community, and the community recognizes us. We have been working diligently to cover a proposal of an AI data center in our area-- going to meetings, talking to officials and hearing the voices of residents. For the first time in my life, I felt like the work I was doing was contributing to a better future. Recently, there has been a ton of concern in Washtenaw over ICE activity. At The Echo, we have been sure to cover what people need to hear and spread awareness of what has been happening. there have been many occasions where I have gotten out of class to immediately edit breaking news articles of an ICE arrest or an update on recommendations on what to do in case of being approached by ICE. I realized that what I do is important. Journalism is important. Being informed is necessary for the safety and representation of communities. On every level, journalism is still necessary. From high school news to international reporting. Through my career in journalism, I intend to represent those in need of a platform. There are so many voices that go unheard because the shouting of the masses is too loud. I will climb to the top so I can pull up those stuck at the bottom. I want to make the top the baseline for everyone so that we may see eye to eye. Journalism is the key to that future, and I intend to craft that key to unlock the door for everyone.
