Bio

Hello! My name is Mackenzie Smith and I will be the first in my family to graduate college. When asked about what my dream job would be when I was little it used to be engineer or scientists (I have always been a science nerd and curious about all things life). But as I grow older and adopted 2 dogs, my love for animals as spread across my life. My new career choice is to become a Veterinarian, I want to use my love for animals to make big impacts in the world. I want to help animals because they are misunderstood but also because they deserve to live long and happy lives. I have a lot of big dreams and aspirations and making impacts about helping animals is one of them. I want to pursue a possible double major in Biology and Animal and Veterinary Biosciences at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. I believe that I could make a real impact in this world. I want to build up my own veterinary clinic (and who knows maybe make the clinic into something larger) when I am older. I am your average teenage girl with big dreams and aspirations, that is all I can say.

Raise Me Up to DO GOOD Scholarship
Being raised in a household where we are split household as well as having a lot of hardships throughout the past decade has made me realize to be grateful for what I have. To be grateful that I have two parents that love and care for me and that support what I want to do in the future regarding my goals and my career. They push me to do better because they know I can do better. It also has shaped me into the role model person for my younger step sister. Having my family this way has turned me into a very empathetic person but also someone who cares a lot about people and looks beyond their flaws. For my career, I want to be a veterinarian. I own two dogs who are both rescues and it has made me realize how many people and animals don't get treated the way they should. My emotional personality has also helped make this career decision. I am very good when helping people through their emotions and understanding what they are feeling regardless of if I have been in a similar or the same situation. I want to make a difference and an impact that helps bring humans and animals together when currently humans are just abusing animals. Look at the habitat destruction that human activities have caused within the last 5 to ten years. It is insanity. How I see my future after I graduate from college and from veterinary school is I will have my own practice as well as I want to make a shelter for rescue animals. I also want to have a few online businesses or one primary business to help bring in additional income to fund research projects. My interests go beyond just saving animals I am interested in Marine Biology as well. This is another great aspect of being a part of a split family household, you get multiple perspectives based on different life experiences and then your family can give their opinion on what your plans are. In fact, my parents are actually the ones that suggested the research projects aside from my vet practice for the future. Over the years, I have learned a lot of new things from both my family and external factors. I want to use my talent of being a more emotional and empathetic person to do better in this world for the sake of both animals and humans. I want to make an impact when it comes to communication between the species as well as help animals find their forever homes and give them happy lives. I want to help my family achieve the life they have wanted for a long time. I want to show my sister that she can acheive anything, she just needs to put in the work for it despite what other people might say. I want to make an impact using skills that I have learned and life experiences I have gone through. That is what I intend to do, make an impact.

My field of interest is Veterinary Medicine, I chose this field because of my love for animals since a young age. But also because I want to change the perception of communication between humans and animals and help protect our animals. Animals are either abused or misunderstood. Take animals both large and small, humans take advantage of them or perceive them as "bad" because of movies, horror stories, and social media. I desire to create an impact through raising awareness towards the lives of our animal friends but also in other ways, keep the rain forests protected and our oceans as well. Our forests are getting cut down as we speak and our oceans are getting trashed every day. That is not only damaging us as humans and polluting our earth, but also damaging the lives of earths animals. My personal reasons are the fact that I own 2 dogs, an American bulldog/boxer mix who looks like a Pitbull and a Dutch Shepard. Ever since getting these two roughly 4 years ago, my perception of animals has changed. I view them as creatures with so much depth to them just like humans, all animals have emotions they just can't speak our languages directly. They use gestures and signals as their communication. People abuse animals through physical and emotion abuse like when it comes to dogs for example, people take out their emotions on them and put them through dog fights leaving them defenseless. For our marine animals, people kill marine animals in ways that are unimaginable and obtain this incorrect image of some animals that they misunderstand like sharks for example because of movies like Jaws. These goals of improving the relationships between humans and humans will help me achieve my professional passion of working with animals on a more in-depth level and studying them and their behaviors in order to understand them better. I want to work with all kinds of animals, small and large, land and water. I love all types and believe all animals deserve the chance to live a long and happy life. My goals are to make sure that those things happen, to understand animals in general better. The impact I want to make getting into Veterinary Medicine as a career field and working with animals in general is to make our planet safer for them, raise awareness for animals who can't speak for themselves, and to improve communication between animals and humans. These fantastic creatures are put on this earth to work together with them, smaller household pets like cats and dogs are meant to be our companions and best friends. It is about time we start treating them like the amazing creatures they are.
      Andrea N. Santore Scholarship
I chose veterinary medicine as a career path as I discovered my love for animals when I got my two dogs about 4 years ago. The treatment of animals large and small on a daily is outrageous and uncalled for. Most people assume an animal is viscous based on how the owner trains it, or even with other animals like for example sharks. It is a very broad topic, but most people perceive sharks as these "blood thirsty" creatures when they aren't like that at all. Humans jump to conclusions and assume a lot of things about animals. Animals can't express their needs and wants through speaking so they have to use actions or gestures to communicate, some people can take this as acts of aggression when in fact it is actually the complete opposite. Or the human is just provoking them. I chose this career path to help animals and give them the best life possible but to also show the world that animals aren't horrible creatures or viscous beings. They are simply just misunderstand through communication. Getting a degree in this field will impact my life in terms of being able to make more of an impact in helping animals, not just for medical reasons but helping them be more understood in this world. As well as one of my other goals being to stop or at least prevent animal abuse. Animals are treated horribly in certain situations and it is sickening and disgusting to see how someone can treat an animal who would put their life on the line like that. Although some people might see being a veterinarian as just "giving a dose of medication to an animal," I see it as a new opportunity. I see it as a chance to make a difference in the world and speak for animals and stand behind them in terms of preventing abuse, helping communication between species, and helping animals live long and happy lives. We are all here on this earth as one, and if we want earth to flourish, animals and humans alike need to work together. We all play a vital role and humans using some of our functional advantages against animals makes me very angry. Getting a degree in Biology and Animal and Veterinary Biosciences will help me make a difference in the world, to help change perspectives and views towards animals as some might see them as useless creatures. As well as providing a better environment and ecosystem for these creatures. I want to make a difference in the world for one of things I believe in, human and animal equality. Choosing to become a veterinarian and getting a degree in this field will help me make a difference, bigger than your average helping animals. I want to change the world and change perspectives. Yes, I am aware that I have big dreams and big goals, but I want to chase them. Getting this scholarship will help me chase those dreams and achieve those goals, and hopefully make a large impact on the world.
      Once Upon a #BookTok Scholarship
My ideal bookshelf would have to include books like Imposter by Alexia Mantzouranis and Ice Breaker by Hannah Grace. Although these books both have romance in them they also include topics about eating disorders and body dysmorphia. They include topics about mental health and heart break and the healing process of all of these topics. These books showcase that is is okay not to be okay but at the same time you don't need to restrict yourself just for somebody else's standards. In the book Imposter, Amelia Drakos is in a band with her brothers but she struggles with cruel comments and being cyberbullied by people on the internet. She finds herself scrolling through comments from time to time and then hating herself whenever she looks in the mirror and this type of scene showcases how the majority of teen girls feel when growing up. We start to doubt ourselves when we look in the mirror or see somebody who looks better than us and we think we need to starve ourselves to feel better. In Ice Breaker, Anastasia Allen struggles with eating as well. Her team mate for ice skating Aaron cuts down her calories and makes her underweight and unhealthy and still talks negatively about her weight. Eventually in the book she Anastasia finds herself learning how to cook better and choosing healthy nutrient-filled food to eat like protein pancakes. Her boyfriend Nathan Hawkins teaches her that she can eat the food she wants to eat without the restrictions but shows her how to make it healthy so she can still figure skate. Both of these books deal with eating disorders and the negative impacts people can have on our bodies as teen girls. They also teach how to think positively and shift your mindset when dealing with your mental health related to your body. As somebody who used to and still sometimes struggles with my body image, these books have had a positive impact on me. I have learned that no matter what you do or look like, not everybody is going to like you and that one person will dislike you. But these books have taught me that the only people who matter are the ones that me for me. The titles that I absolutely love are Haunting Adeline, Imposter, Ice Breaker, and the Twisted Series. These books are all steamy romance books but they all give very important lessons throughout the books. These titles have impacted the #BookTok community by sharing personal stories that a person could be going through and seeing that they are not alone and teach them that it will be okay has a positive impact on the #BookTok community. We need more books like these to showcase real mental impacts the world has on people and that what you say or do to someone can have a larger impact on them than people think.

The field of interest I have chosen is Biology more specifically a veterinarian. I chose this because of my love for animals and my desire to give them the best life that they deserve. I want to create an impact in terms of showing the world that animals they perceive as dangerous aren't and that you just need to gain their trust. Most animals are more protective than others, but it takes kindness and respect and that will get you a long way with an animal. My personal reason is that my passion originally came from when I got my two dogs, Belle and Rigby. They shined a whole new perspective on me of animals and understanding their behaviors as well as their emotions. Also, that they have certain actions or even though they can't speak words like humans you can tell what they are trying to say by their actions or how they look at you. My dogs also taught me that trust is earned and built up over time and you can't expect it to be handed to you. The goal of helping animals and giving them their best life is what will help me achieve my professional passion. I also have ambition and drive for the future and opening up my own veterinary clinic to help even more animals in my life. That is why I chose Biology (Veterinarian) as my field of interest and my career goal.
      Pet Pals Pack Compassion Award
I decided to pursue a career in the veterinary field because of my love for animals. I feel like most animals are misunderstood and abused a lot and I want to give animals a long life. It doesn't matter what type of animal they are, whether it is marine, farm, household, etc. I want animals to have a long life. Most animals nowadays get misunderstood as harmful creatures when in fact it is the complete opposite. They have natural instincts and humans provoke them or abuse them that makes them appear as harmful. Every animal deserves a good life, a healthy one at that. I own two dogs personally and ever since I got them my love for animals has expanded a tremendous amount. I want to pursue a career in the veterinary field because I want to help animals in need and save them from death. Animals don't deserve to be in pain or put through abuse at all and they deserve to be treated with care and respect. The reason why I am choosing this career field is because I have always been an animal lover, some animals I am scared of (venomous or large animals at first) but it just takes some kindness and respect till they are your bestfriend. It kills me inside to see animals being mistreated and abused as if they are an object when they are nearly a human being. My goal is to give animals a long life, whether large or small, or the different species, I want them all to be healthy and happy in their habitat. I want animals to trust me because I would never hurt them. I have so much love and care for animals and that can be seen through how I treat my dogs daily. I love them so much and even more when they smile and I see them happy and spoiled. My reason for pursuing a career in the veterinary field is very broad but it represents my reasoning for this choice. I want to help animals, I want to prevent as many animal deaths as possible, that is my main goal. All animals deserve to be loved because they are one of god's gifts to this planet. They are a part of our life and should be treated with the kindness, love, care, and respect that they deserve. An animal isn't harmful, the reason they are perceived as this is because of being provoked by humans or other animals, it is natural instincts just like human survival. Humans and animals should have the most powerful bond considering we are connected. I want to help animals as much as possible, that is my life goal. I want to show the world that animals are not harmful and you just have to get their trust. Animals are a gift to this world and can be a man's best friend. That is why I decided to pursue a career in the veterinary field.
      Ventana Ocean Conservation Scholarship
For me, protecting our oceans means protecting an environment and an ecosystem. With the increase of pollution recently many species of animals are dying because of either getting caught up in a net or swallowing a foreign body. As well as coral reefs are dying and fish species due to overfishing. I intend to use my degree to help as many animals stay away from death as possible, as well as donating money that I earn in my career to ocean conservation foundations and charities. As well as expanding from just household pets to larger animals including marine life. Every life is worth a lot and with my degree I can help save more marine animals as well. I am a nature lover and have been for a long while, when people think of the ocean they think of shark attacks or man-eating fish. Those things happen sometimes but at the same time, these creatures are very much at peace and they won't hurt you unless they get threatened. The majority of the time it is because people look like their prey (example: sea lions with sharks). An animals life should be valued as much as a humans life. But also all animals aren't bad creatures just like humans, they deserve to be understood and cared for. Guaranteed some humans have done horrible things, but they could have their reasons or people may have provoked them. You don't know what a person or animal has gone through just by looking at them. When it comes to protecting our oceans this is crucial. The reason for it is because the majority of our world is made of water. Not only that, think of where your water on a daily basis comes from. With pollution, this makes water not only undrinkable for humans but inhabitable for animals. This makes species of marine life and coral die out. There are many types of pollution but one that most of humanity seems to struggle with is ocean pollution. This can be old fishing nets, plastic bottles, plastic straws, plastic bags, old scraps of metal, old clothing, electronic devices, wrappers and paper from food waste. All of these items are pollution. I care about protecting our oceans because it is a whole other side of life, there is a whole world under the ocean that we have barely explored. The ocean is truly a wonderful place, with amazing marine life under the water. They are an extraordinary ecosystem and deserve to be protected from harm. Pollution and overfishing needs to come to an end. Our oceans need to be protected and conserved, overfishing needs to come to an end as well. Pollution is a great way to start since that is a primary killing factor. Overall, it is human activities that cause harm to our oceans. If we just switch our daily lifestyle for more sustainable or conservative actions and activities, our oceans would look a whole lot better than they do now. All it takes is a little bit of hard work and enough people willing to do the right thing to protect and conserve our oceans.

For veterinary medicine and it's influence on my life, it started when I got my first dog, Belle. My love for animals has always been a tremendous amount, but actually owning an animal changed my perspective. Now I currently have two dogs, and whenever they are sick, injured, or in need of a little love I want to assist in any way. I feel like animals should be given another chance at life no matter the circumstances. This is why I want to become a veterinarian, this has also influenced my beliefs about animals, my relationships with animals, and my career aspirations. Before I got dogs I wanted to be an engineer or a scientist of some sort. But after I got animals of my own, it made me realize how much I love these creatures. I am passionate about veterinary science because animals are a man's bestfriend as they say. But they are also extremely helpful to the planet, most animals are extremely intelligent when it comes to certain circumstances. But also the factor that some career fields have the assistance that comes from animals. I feel like every animal should get the help they need or in a dire situation, get another chance at life. Whether large or small animals, they are all unique and important. My contributions to veterinary science could help because of the needed veterinarians in this world. But also because more and more animals die each year. Not just that, the factor that so many pet owners give up these creatures either to shelters or the streets. These animals become helpless and I want to save them. I want to give my all to save them. That is probably every veterinarians goal though. I just want these animals to be okay and I think that every person who intends to harm animals should have serious consequences. Animals are a gift to this world, once they are gone we can't get them back. A lot of animals are going extinct because of humanity and our activities that we do towards animals. I want to do my part and go against these people, but I'm doing it for the animals. Even if it's large animals or small animals, they deserve to live a long, happy, and healthy life no matter the circumstances. This is why I want to be a veterinarian, to give animals a life they deserve. I want them to be safe, I want to save as many animals from severe injuries or possible death as I can. That is why I want to be a veterinarian.
Lindsey Vonn ‘GREAT Starts With GRIT’ Scholarship
Throughout my life, I have gone through some things that have required me to build a more protective mindset. Whether it is getting hurt by someone who was close to me or trying to figure out the hurdles in life, I have built up a mindset that helps me understand my worth and who I am as a person. Life isn't always easy, it will never be. That is one thing I have learned: if you want something, you have to work hard to get what you want. One of my favorite quotes is "It's not impossible, just challenging". Nothing in life is ever impossible. You just have to work hard at it, you need the ambition and the drive in your mind, and the will to want to do it. That is one thing I have built up. I have a lot of ambition and drive for when I want to do something and I will do whatever it takes to get that. I am willing to put commitment into something if I truly want it. I can imagine a future for myself with my career choice as a veterinarian, I will be doing what I love which is saving the lives of animals. I am very much career-driven. I have a dream and I am willing to do whatever it takes to accomplish my dreams and my goals. I want to own my veterinary clinic when I am older as well as own an e-commerce (more specifically dropshipping) business. I want to be financially free from living paycheck to paycheck. I feel like I have embodied a mindset of "I can do anything as long as I put my mind to it" and frankly, a lot of people say that they lack motivation or they don't want to do it or put the work in to achieve their dreams and goals. But it is all in the mentality of how bad you want it. How badly do you want that dream or goazl. I want my dreams and goals very badly, and I am willing to do anything for it. I can imagine the future ahead and what it will be like if I accomplish my goals. If the future that I want happens, I want to donate to organizations that help the environment. I care a lot about the planet, whether it is ocean clean-ups or planting trees for a forest. That is what I intend to do when I am older, I want to give back to the planet and to the people who have helped me reach where I am and where I will go. The mindset I have built up or embodied in myself is to never give up no matter how hard things get. I have been in financial problems, relationship problems with people, and my trust in people being betrayed. But I know my worth and I won't let one situation tear me down. The mindset I have embodied is empowering, knowing my worth and my ambition and drive to achieve my goals and always try beyond my best at things or situations I get put into. This is how I am the way I am.
      Keep Her Dream Alive Scholarship
I have always been an animal lover however, when I switched my career to a veterinarian was when I got my first dog Belle. Belle gave me a new perspective on animals but more specifically, household pets. I love animals with all of my heart and now owning two dogs I want to become a veterinarian even more. I believe that no matter the circumstances, animals should be given a second chance at life. Animals can be and are a mans bestfriend, they will love you like no other and they won't forget about you. They are also extremely loyal and very obedient to their human owner, they are also highly intelligent and know about most situations before humans even do. They will always put their humans life first before their own. These creatures are incredible and amazing, they deserve to be saved. I hate it whenever somebody gives up their pet to the streets or to a shelter. It breaks my heart because then the animal has to live with the abandonment of their previous owner for the rest of their lives. Not just that, some animals even pass away in shelters because nobody wants to adopt them. As well as people who put dogs into dog fighting, I hate that, I hate that with everything in me. Putting into a dog into a helpless situation is horrible. Experiencing owning a dog and giving it care has led me to pursue an education in veterinary science. I want to be a veterinarian someday and open my own vet clinic. I want to give these incredible creatures hope, hope for the future and hope for a life they deserve. Most animals aren't on this planet for as long as humans are, so I feel like they should be given the best life possible. It doesn't matter if the animal is a household pet such as a cat or a dog or if it's a shark. An animal's life should always matter. Despite the size, the species, the breed, the size of teeth or their place in our environment. An animal's life should always matter. Being a veterinarian would bring me so much happiness seeing an animals potential to live longer when they are near passing away. I don't wish for any animal to go through any sort of pain or hurt in their life. I just wish for all animals to be safe, happy, healthy, and to enjoy a long life that they deserve.

      Scorenavigator Financial Literacy Scholarship
For my personal experiences with finances, I have been tight on money in my family before so I would say I am great about being on a budget. I have learned the difference between wanting something and a necessity, but also how to cut costs and additional items when needed. We used to barely make our rent now we have moved to a home that is more affordable and we still cut costs where we can. It isn't easy sometimes, however it can be done. As for financial education, I am learning about e-commerce and the business world. Hopefully, once I start an e-commerce business, which I intend on doing very soon, then I can manage finances for the company/brand. I started taking dual-credit (high school and college credit) classes for business. I am learning about the internal and external business environment, but also how factors such as political, legal, technological, demographical, and society can influence a business. For me, running my own business soon (and hopefully seeing success) means that I can be financially stable and not have to work your regular 9-5 job. I would like to be my own boss and dictate my own hours based off of when I wish to work. I understand that it won't be easy, but I'm willing to take on the challenge of it. As for the future, I don't want to have financially related tough situations. I would like to not have debt in any form or have to live paycheck to paycheck. When it comes to e-commerce, I would like to start dropshipping in order to hopefully make a 6-figure income or more. I want to be financially free from this world. A lot of people are stuck in the regular 9-5 jobs or living paycheck to paycheck. I would like to live beyond that and afford everything I could've ever dreamed of. Life isn't easy, it never will be. But with the skills and things I have learned about finances, financial education, and e-commerce, I am willing to take on the challenging. One of my favorite quotes is "It's not impossible, just challenging", but that is a challenge I'm willing to take on. If I do become successful, I want to give back to the world. I want to restore this planet and help give back to the oceans and forests that are keeping humanity alive. I want to make this world have a better future, I want to at least contribute to it. Again, life isn't easy, it never has been. But if you don't at least try, you won't ever see the possible success that you could have.
