Being the first of my siblings to start at a four-year university, I wanted to experience it all. As an education major, what better way to make an impact than to help another student reach their goals? Our class was asked if anyone would be a notetaker for a fellow student who was currently going through cancer treatments at the start of the school year. I thought this would be a great opportunity for me to make a difference in another student’s life. This is what I hope to do with my future students as an early childhood education major. Why not start making a difference in a life now? Come to find out, the student I would be taking notes for in this class was an athlete I used to compete against in high school sports. Wow! First off, I didn't even know she was sick. Second, I was so glad that I always left the competition on the floor, at the track, and on the cross-country route. Even though we were competitors, we knew who each other was and felt an ease of communication from the moment we started working together on the coursework. My friend is back at the university and doing well. When she returned to class, it was like she had been in class the entire time with me. She did get the notes from me, but I gained a new friend from another town with some familiarity. I could not imagine starting the school year off in the hospital and being unable to attend the beginning of the school year, at a new school, as a freshman, without someone willing to step up and help another student in need. I hope that other students are doing the same to help others in a positive way. There are so many ways that we can help others. Above, I listed one instance where I was able to help another student feel welcome and alleviate anxiety while going through treatments away from campus. My plan is to continue this pattern of helping others while in college, when I am home from school, and in my future career of teaching early childhood education. There are so many ways that we can all show kindness toward others that will positively impact everyone involved. I have made it a goal to show kindness every day. Some might ask, "How can you do that every day?" It can be as easy as holding the door open for someone walking into a building, complimenting someone you cross paths with, smiling, saying hello, or lifting someone up with praise. It goes back to the line I always heard growing up: "Treat others as you would like to be treated." If we can remember to lift up others instead of just competing or trying to one-up them, this world would definitely be a better place for all. Leadership has helped me become who I am today. Some of my leadership roles have been as a teacher's assistant, an audio-visual specialist and a sales associate. Through these different positions I have learned characteristics that many great leaders share. A pivotal leadership role I undertook was as a teacher's assistant at a local elementary school throught my high school co-op program. Here, I shouldered the responsibility of supporting both teachers and students, improving my leadership and problem-solving skills while emphasizing the importance of teamwork. Helping these students was not just fulfilling; it solidified my passion to become a teacher with the community of teachers with the simialr goals. My leadership roles extended into athletics in cross country, basketball, and track and field. As a team captain in cross country, I not only led by example through my commitment to training and discipline but also brought unity and motivation among team members. In basketball and track and field, my leadership role was to encourage teamwork, model a positive competitive spirit, and support growth of each team member. I assumed the role of an audio-visual specialist at my church, extending my leadership to a small congregation. This position demanded precision in setting up audio-visual boards before services, instilling in me the art of reliability. As a sales associate at the local movie theater, my leadership responsibilities spanned money management, public service, and sales. Looking ahead, I aspire to leverage these multifaceted leadership skills in securing a teaching position in an elementary school. From my varied leadership experiences, including those in sports, I've learned that effective leadership transcends mere control; it involves collaborative teamwork to achieve shared goals. The career that I have chosen to pursue is elementary education. Teachers give back to their students and community every day. I have experienced this while working my co-op job as a teachers aid at our local grade school. The teachers I work with model giving, selflessnes, and compassion to all students at all times. It is important to help these young individuals feel part of the class, school and community. Some of the experiences I have been able to help with include; organizing and baking for the craft show to setting up and serving at various events. My volunteer journey has been diverse and enriching. As a future educator, I know that community service is important for me to model for my students. There is a possibility that I might one day lead some of my future students in community service events that could make a positive impact on their lives. One of the key aspects of my volunteer work is centered around community events. For instance, I've baked tirelessly for the craft show, student council bake sale, and Easter Seals week. These experiences have not only sharpened my baking skills but also demonstrated the power of shared efforts in raising funds for meaningful causes. Basketball tryouts for younger grades and working at the Little Girls Basketball Camp showcase my dedication to sports and community engagement. I hope my love for the game excites younger basketball athletes and that they will understand the importance of teamwork, dedication, and committment. Participating in events such as South School's Santa Workshop and Vacation Bible School allowed me to contribute to the joy and development of younger members of our community. Working these events also helped me grow as an individual. It was very rewarding to listent to the conversations and innoccense of others. When I helped set up for events like the Senior Honors Banquet, National Honor Society Banquet and the scholarship awards ceremony. Attending these events as a volunteer gave me a better understanding and importance of these achivements as I could achieve as a junior and senior in high school. These events were very eye-opening for me and helped me set my own goals of achievement. In applying for the Our Destiny Our Future Scholarship, I envision furthering my commitment to community service as I pursue higher education and into my teaching career. In conclusion, my diverse volunteer experiences have shaped my understanding of the positive change that can be achieved through community service.

Basketball is a favorite sport of mine to play. I have been in a gym from the time I was able to walk, I was on the basketball court with my grandpa, my aunt Michelle or my dad. All three of them had a great impact on me and all the players that they coached. My grandpa coached the girls basketball team to a state competition in 2004-2005. When he retired from coaching high school girls basketball he coached me in "bitty ball" at the local recreation center in town. His love for the game and me quickly drew a number of my classmates to the sport as well. My grandpa didn't care who he was coaching basketball to, he just wanted everyone to learn and love the game of basketball. ball. My love for basketball started early and I continued playing the game through my senior year of high school. My passion brought about much success on and off the court. When I started playing high school basketball I asked to look at all the stat records, from those records I made some goals I wanted to accomplish in my high school career. I am happy to say I made one goal of breaking the assist record at my high school. I now hold the record of most career and season assists at my high school. Other great accomplishments I have been recognized for include, "Best Defensive Player" for JV and Varsity teams in the 2021-2022 season. Then in the following season I was recognized as "Most Valuable Player" of the varsity team. During the IPC vs. Sangamo Shootout I was voted "Player of the Game" two years in a row. My basketball career did not go without its challenges. As a freshman, our season was put on hold due to the pandemic. Our team was required to wear masks while running up and down the court. Some of my teammates left the team because of the rules and regulations of the pandemic. Our numbers were down and required our starting five players to play for extended periods of time with little to no rest. Our small team came together determined to have a winning season, which we did 18/14 games. With only two seniors on the team this year, we had to seek out others to play on the team. It was our responsibility to help the underclassmen, some with not much basketball experience, understand the drills, the plays and ultimately the competitive game situations. This game has taught me how to work as a team and communicate with others as well as make on-the-court decisions for the win. When we did not win, we would get back to work to succeed in the next game. What I have learned from the game, my teammates and my coaches will help me reach my goals in the future.

I have seen both of my brothers navigate college ahead of me. Both of them inspire me to graduate from college debt free. One has already graduated debt free with his degree in Physical Education and the other is almost done with his degree in Accounting debt free. They were able to keep costs down by going to the local community college before transferring to their four-year universities. The biggest reason they both started at the community college was because they were not sure what they wanted to do for a living. In 4th-grade I knew that I wanted to teach. I want to start my college career at the best state school for teachers. This will allow me to immerse myself in any extras that are offered to students interested in teaching. Being part of a teaching community while in college from the beginning of my education until the day I graduate will allow me to collaborate with other teachers throughout my education. I would like to make this dream come true without being forced to repay debt when my eduaction is complete. My plan has been to graduate debt free like my brothers. During high school I had four part-time jobs, maintained my spot on the honor roll all four years, and was a three-sport athlete (cross country, basketball and track). My jobs included being an audio-visual technicain at my church, a high school co-op student aid at South Grade School, a tutor for a junior high school student and a movie theater attendant at our local movie theater. In the summer, I also was a concession stand worker at the public pool in town. To stay organized, I have a color coded calendar outside my bedroom door that I maintain at the start of every month. This is a quick and easy way for me to look at before the week starts as well as remember times I need to be places on a day-to-day basis. My jobs and sports schedules have helped me stay focused on my school work too. When you only have a set amount of time to get school work done there is not time to lose. If anything, this limited amount of time has helped me do assignments ahead of time rather than procrastinate. My system works well for me in all areas of my life. I have maintained a 4.0 grade point average throughout my high school career, been successful in athletics and learned some valuable lessons for the different jobs that I have worked. Balancing this lifestyle has not always been easy. There were days that I did not want to go to school because of a game or meet that was hours away the night before. However, I knew that getting up and going to school would benefit my future. My work ethic during high school is one of my greatest accomplishments. Moving forward to my college education, I hope to continue working and growing as a student in the education field. Hopefully, my future employers will see my work ethic and dedication to my future students as well.

My name is Mackenzie Mercer. I am a senior at Illinois Valley Central High School. I am planning on going to school at Illinois State University. My major will be Elementary Education. I have worked with children for most of my life. Teaching swim lessons, working my churches vacation bible school, and at my current co-op job at South School. I work closely with elementary teachers, providing assistance to kindergarten through 1st-grade students in their classrooms. This hands-on experience has deepened my understanding of the classroom culture and fueled my passion for becoming an educator. I do believe I am deserving of this scholarship, due to my co-op placement with students everyday at South School who are struggling with mental health challenges, which are currently at an all-time high. I understand the importance of making others aware of mental health issues happening in our schools. Mental health issues among students are inhibiting their ability to learn. Because I am actively engaged in the lives of elementary students, teachers and teachers aides like myself I see the signs of social and emotional issues every day. I have seen students act out with disruptive behaviors and others with fears that seem irrational to me. If students are not getting the support from their parents at home much of this responsibility lies on teachers and future teachers, like myself. Everyone deserves a chance to learn and I hope to help all of my future students get the most out of their education and start with a great confidence that will carry them through their educational journey. From what I have seen as a teacher's aide, when students feel like they are safe and understood they tend to be more engaged in the activities and learning that are happening in class. Some of the things that I have noticed other teachers do to make students feel safe and understood include, getting down to their level on their knees and looking the young, sometimes upset, student in the eyes. Also, an encouraging hug that makes them feel better too. Of course any scholarship would help any student further their education. However, I feel like this scholarship would be helping me address the issues of mental-health for students at an early age. The earlier you start talking about mental health with others, including students, the bigger impact can be made. As a future teacher, I will be working with students, parents, adminstrators and counselors just to name a few. Who better to make others aware of mental health issues than a teacher? Utlimately, I would like to make a difference in students' lives. This encompasses all aspects of their lives. Mental health is an enormous part of the young lives I will be with day in and day out. At my current job as a co-op student I have seen some very supportive teachers that do all the extras to make all students feel like they are safe and welcome. Ever since the pandemic mental and physical health have become topics of concern in and out of the classroom. Neglecting mental health can give rise to many challenges, impacting various aspects of life. Issues such as depression, reduced motivation for academic pursuits, stress, anxiety, time management difficulties, and social isolation can creep into both academic performance and personal life. As a high school senior, I've encountered potential stressors, such as paper deadlines and tests with a lot of material, as well as peer pressure that could have negativley affected my mental health. However, my strong support system, comprising friends, family, and sports teams, has been vital in navigating these challenges. My approach to maintaining mental well-being involves a plan that includes different aspects of my life. Being a three-sport athlete I exercise five days a week. As most know, exercising has been proven to free endorphins and help manage stress. To curb depression and anxiety I read and spend time with my family and friends. I am a creature of habit and I like to stick to my routines which have proven to help me throughout my high school education. In addition, it is important for me to maintain my mental well-being through the involvement of my church community. I also dedicate time to support an elderly woman from my church, Mossville Unitied Methodist Church, who lives alone. Looking out for others' mental health is also imporatnt. I make it a priority to visit her regularly, offering assistance with tasks such as making her bed, cleaning her home, and simply being present to engage in meaningful conversation. The role of faith emerges as a powerful contributor to both my physical and mental well-being. Active participation in my church community serves as a source of upliftment. Engaging in meaningful conversations with individuals from diverse backgrounds within this community enriches my perspective and reinforces a sense of connection. The spiritual component adds depth to my overall well-being, meshing with other aspects of life to create a comprehensive support system. Looking ahead to the challenges of college life at Illinois State University, maintaining a delicate balance between academics, social commitments, and self-care becomes important. While in high school I have made many memories, grown as a person and had my share of challenges as well. One such challenge was navigating my freshman year during the start of the Covid-19 pandemic. Everything was up in the air. Would I be able to play in high school sports? If so, when would we start competeing and how. I was disappointed, scared, and unsure what high school would look like for me. The thing that I was going to miss most was the chance to participate in high school sports. The pandemic did not allow our high school athletes to even pratice with each other. Instead of falling into the world of "screen time", I decided to make the most out of the extra time I had by finding something to do. Being an athlete, I am always going. So, at age 14, I accepted my first job, babysitting for three boys. I was required to get up early and come home after 5:30 p.m. when their mom came home. I put in a lot of hours at their house learning how to make them lunches and get them up and moving too. Saying that I learned a lot during that time is an understatement. Wow, work is hard! It reminded me a lot of the physical work I put in during my sports practices. I also learned a lot too. Interacting with the boys taught me patience, compassion, and how to handle challenges too. It was aswesome to see their mom's dedication to her job during a pandemic. This experience taught me the importance of commitment to work in troubled and scary times. While the pandemic initially side-traked my plans as a student-athlete, it ultimately helped me gain a better understanding of life. These challenges I encountered during high school gave me a sense of purpose, moving me towards alternative goals in my pursuit of fun. I was proud of myself for getting through the pandemic with little changes to my physical and mental health.This experience helped me grow and learn more about myself and how to get through tough times. The life lessons that I learned through the pandemic made me a stronger person and I feel I am more equipped to overcome adversity. Getting through the pandemic has preparred me to get through other obstacles I will face in the future, whether it be school, work or family.

I do believe I am deserving of this scholarship, due to my co-op placement with students everyday at South School who are struggling with mental health challenges, which are currently at an all-time high. I understand the importance of making others aware of mental health issues happening in our schools. Mental health issues among students are inhibiting their ability to learn. Because I am actively engaged in the lives of elementary students, teachers and teachers aides like myself I see the signs of social and emotional issues every day. I have seen students act out with disruptive behaviors and others with fears that seem irrational to me. If students are not getting the support from their parents at home much of this responsibility lies on teachers and future teachers, like myself. Everyone deserves a chance to learn and I hope to help all of my future students get the most out of their education and start with a great confidence that will carry them through their educational journey. From what I have seen as a teacher's aide, when students feel like they are safe and understood they tend to be more engaged in the activities and learning that are happening in class. Some of the things that I have noticed other teachers do to make students feel safe and understood include, getting down to their level on their knees and looking the young, sometimes upset, student in the eyes. Also, an encouraging hug that makes them feel better too. Of course any scholarship would help any student further their education. However, I feel like this scholarship would be helping me address the issues of mental-health for students at an early age. The earlier you start talking about mental health with others, including students, the bigger impact can be made. As a future teacher, I will be working with students, parents, adminstrators and counselors just to name a few. Who better to make others aware of mental health issues than a teacher? Utlimately, I would like to make a difference in students' lives. This encompasses all aspects of their lives. Mental health is an enormous part of the young lives I will be with day in and day out. At my current job as a co-op student I have seen some very supportive teachers that do all the extras to make all students feel like they are safe and welcome.
