The first time I understood what risk truly meant, I was standing in a hospital hallway, listening to doctors explain that my mother, who has battled Multiple Sclerosis for most of my life, was in a coma. I was in high school. The word uncertain suddenly felt very real. There were no guarantees, no timelines, and no clear answers. There were only probabilities, hope, and the quiet strength of a woman who had spent her life protecting her children from the weight of her illness. Growing up with a mother who fought MS shaped the way I understand resilience, preparation, and responsibility. MS is unpredictable. Some days were normal, while others were filled with fatigue, pain, or medical appointments. Yet my mother never allowed her diagnosis to define our household. She attended events, helped with homework, and showed up in every way she could. Even when she was struggling physically, she made sure we felt secure emotionally. She managed her health the way risk professionals manage exposure, by preparing, adapting, and refusing to let uncertainty control the outcome. When she fell into a coma during my high school years, I saw the fragile side of risk in a way most teenagers do not. Medical decisions, financial strain, and an unknown future collided at once. Watching my family navigate those challenges opened my eyes to how deeply health, finances, and protection are intertwined. Risk is not just a concept in a textbook. It is the difference between stability and crisis. Insurance is not just a policy. It is a safeguard for families fighting battles they never expected. My mother survived. Her recovery was not simple, and her health journey has continued to demand strength. What has always stood out to me is that she never let her children see fear. She modeled perseverance with quiet dignity. She taught me that while we cannot eliminate every risk, we can prepare for it, respond to it, and protect the people we love through it. Now, as a mother myself, I carry that lesson daily. I want my child to grow up seeing resilience the same way I did. I am pursuing risk management and insurance because I have lived the reality behind the policies. I have seen how coverage, advocacy, and financial preparedness can determine whether a family survives a crisis with stability or falls apart under its weight. I am passionate about RMI because it combines analytical thinking with human impact. Behind every risk assessment is a family. Behind every claim is a story. This scholarship would allow me to continue building the technical foundation necessary to serve families like mine. It would reduce financial pressure as I pursue my education and professional credentials, allowing me to focus fully on mastering the quantitative and strategic skills required in this field. More importantly, it would help me move closer to a career where I can contribute to systems that provide security during life’s most uncertain moments. My mother taught me that perseverance is not loud. It is consistent. It is showing up even when circumstances are unpredictable. Risk management and insurance embody that same principle by preparing quietly so that when crisis comes, stability remains. Her fight with MS taught me what uncertainty feels like. My education in RMI is teaching me how to manage it. For my own child, I intend to do both, face risk with courage and build a future grounded in protection, preparation, and purpose.
