Hi, my name is Mack Wilson. The image I uploaded is a picture of my family and I. Family is very important to me. They are the ones who are there to help you when you stumble, who guide you when you’re lost, and support you when you’re vulnerable. I have always felt their love and support, and I feel lucky that I can always trust that they have my back.
And family extends beyond those I am related to by blood. My family is my community: my friends, neighbors, teachers, and classmates who have bolstered me and relate to my experience. I am fortunate to have such a supportive network within it.
As of right now, I live in Texas, but before I moved here, I lived in New Orleans. I moved to Texas after my freshman year of high school, and I had to make a transition. This mainly stemmed from moving out of a predominantly Black community into a predominantly White one. The amount of support I experienced was just different. The stark contrast I felt between these two communities just made me value those around me more.
I have found a community of people like me here in Texas, and my family and my community have helped me greatly while I was here. A big part of the career I pursue is because of this community. They offered me the support I needed in times when I was vulnerable, and so a big goal of mine is to give back. By pursuing a STEM career as a Black individual, I want to inspire others and to help pave a path for more black individuals to follow. I want to help grow the minority of black individuals in a field I care about. To me, this image represents community and giving back.
