Pediatric stroke survivor and aspiring physician //
I aspire to contribute directly to diversity in practicing healthcare physicians. My personal experience demonstrates the ability to overcome adversity as a disabled woman in medicine. Most people who have a right cerebral arterial stroke are never able to care for themselves without assistance, let alone aspire to go to medical school. Learning to cope with the idea that I am disabled has given a new meaning to the word for me.
Young adults with disabilities are underrepresented in medical schools, and their graduation rates are lower than those of students without disability. Making it more equitable to practice medicine for disabled physicians would help immensely maximize quality patient care and equality. I plan to spend a significant amount of my time making the medical field a more equitable place for qualified but disabled physicians to practice. //

Redefining Victory Scholarship
Success, to me, means the accomplishment of a sought-after goal. Personally, success would present itself in the form of a long career as a practicing osteopathic physician. By the time that I retire, my greatest accomplishment will be successfully completing medical school, residency and a lifetime of service as a provider for underserved areas. I will have exponentially increased my medical exposure and understanding while gaining irreplaceable experience as a provider. I plan to spend a great deal of my life dedicated to working with third-world countries and underserved communities within this country to minimize the gaps in resources and opportunities based on geographic location. I am extremely interested in the prospect of joining Doctors Without Borders to aid in medical relief for underserved communities across seas. That is something I envision being one of my proudest accomplishments as well: providing care for under-developed countries in the most impoverished areas in the world. All in all, I hope to contribute substantially to the lives of patients in need and will consider myself a successful physician if I am able to accomplish this.
Additionally, I aspire to contribute directly to diversity in practicing healthcare physicians. My personal experience demonstrates the ability to overcome adversity. Most people who have a right cerebral arterial stroke are never able to care for themselves without assistance, let alone aspire to go to medical school. Learning to cope with the idea that I am disabled has given a new meaning to the word for me. Erroneous assumptions among health care professionals about the daily lives, preferences, values, and expectations of persons with disability can contribute to documented health care disparities, faulty communication, and substandard quality of care affecting this specific population. Efforts to reduce disparities have focused on expanding diversity in the physician workforce. Increasing the workforce of physicians with disabilities would require major changes in medical training programs and, for physicians who become disabled during their careers, systematically providing reasonable accommodations so they could continue productive practice. Not surprisingly, young adults with disabilities are underrepresented in medical schools, and their graduation rates are lower than those of students without disability. Making it more equitable to practice medicine for disabled physicians would help immensely maximize quality patient care and equality. I plan to spend a significant amount of my time making the medical field a more equitable place for qualified but disabled physicians to practice.
This scholarship will immensely aid in my completion of these goals. This scholarship would cover a large portion of the first year of Osteopathic medical studies tuition. This scholarship would enable me to be a member of the 2nd class at Rocky Vista University - Montana campus. Scholarships are vital to assisting aspiring physicians who are financially independent and covering the entirety of medical school costs themselves. This scholarship would enable me to focus on my schoolwork instead of worrying about maintaining a job AND a 30-credit per term medical student status simultaneously. Learning Osteopathic medicine will enable me to do exactly what I have always wanted to do: practice the most well-rounded, equitable and diverse medicine that I am able to.
