My name is Demetrio Perea and I am 19 years old. I am proud to say that I'm the 2nd generation in my Hispanic family to finish High School and even go to College!
My late mom always wanted me to become a lawyer, doctor or even the president but I have always been passionate about technology since I was little. Throughout my life, I have self-taught myself computer skills such as video editing with Imovie. My life goal is to graduate from college with a Computer Science degree. I want to be able to inspire other students like me, to be able to show them that it is possible to achieve your dreams, even when the path seems rough. I am in a low-income family.
Furthermore, one of my favorite hobbies is gaming. I have played video games since I was 7 years old and I still play today for fun and competitively. I will consider myself a great candidate because I am determined to succeed in life. One thing my mom always told me is that we came here to succeed and I don’t let any obstacles stop me from achieving this, I keep trying. No matter how many times life hits me hard, I will get up! I have goals to achieve and I want to be successful to make this journey worth it. I want to make my family proud! Most importantly, I want to make myself proud. I have the right mindset to do it, now all I need is financial support to be able to achieve it.

Revolutionizing Robotics and Computer Sciences Scholarship
As an undergraduate student in mechatronics, robotics, engineering, and computer science from a historically marginalized community, I believe that one thing that needs to undergo a revolution is the way that we teach and learn STEM subjects.
Traditionally, STEM education has been taught in a very rigid and siloed way. Students are often taught math, science, and engineering in separate classes, and they are not given enough opportunities to apply what they are learning to real-world problems. This approach to education is not only inefficient, but it can also be discouraging for students, especially those from marginalized communities.
I believe that STEM education needs to be revolutionized to become more interdisciplinary and experiential. Students should be given opportunities to learn from each other and to work on projects that challenge them to think critically and creatively. They should also be exposed to the work of STEM professionals from diverse backgrounds so that they can see themselves represented in the field.
One way to revolutionize STEM education is to create more opportunities for students to participate in hands-on learning experiences. This could involve working on projects in makerspaces or fab labs, participating in internships or apprenticeships, or volunteering in the community. By engaging in hands-on learning, students can develop the skills and knowledge they need to succeed in STEM careers.
Another way to revolutionize STEM education is to make it more inclusive and accessible to all students. This means providing all students with access to high-quality STEM education, regardless of their background or socioeconomic status. It also means creating a more welcoming and supportive environment for students from marginalized communities.
I believe that a revolution in STEM education is essential to creating a more equitable and prosperous future for all. When all students have access to a high-quality STEM education, they are better equipped to compete in the global economy and to solve the challenges of the 21st century.
Here are some specific examples of how we can revolutionize STEM education:
Create more interdisciplinary STEM courses and programs that teach students how to apply their knowledge to real-world problems.
Provide students with more opportunities for hands-on learning experiences, such as working on projects in maker spaces or fab labs, participating in internships or apprenticeships, or volunteering in the community.
Make STEM education more inclusive and accessible to all students by providing all students with access to high-quality STEM education, regardless of their background or socioeconomic status, and by creating a more welcoming and supportive environment for students from marginalized communities.
I am committed to working towards a revolution in STEM education. I believe that everyone deserves the opportunity to learn about and pursue a career in STEM, regardless of their background or identity.

I want to serve as a role model and mentor to other first-generation college students and encourage them to pursue their dreams.
To make a positive impact on the world, college-bound students of immigrant families can leverage their experiences and education in various ways. Here are some examples:
Advocacy: Students can use their education and experiences to advocate for immigrant rights and social justice issues. They can join student organizations, participate in protests, and engage with their local communities to raise awareness about these issues.
Mentorship: College-bound students of immigrant families can serve as mentors to younger students from similar backgrounds. They can share their experiences and offer guidance and support to help younger students navigate the challenges of the college application process.
Community service: Students can engage in community service to make a positive impact on their local communities. They can volunteer at local organizations, participate in service projects, and organize fundraising events to support causes they care about.
Research: College-bound students of immigrant families can use their education to research issues that impact their communities. They can collaborate with professors, joint research projects, and present their findings at academic conferences to raise awareness about these issues.
Finally, I plan on using my education to promote diversity and inclusion. As an immigrant and person of color, I understand the importance of diversity and the need for inclusion in all aspects of society. I want to use my education to promote diversity and inclusion in the workplace and society at large.
In conclusion, as a college-bound student from an immigrant family, I am grateful for the opportunities that my education provides. I plan on using my education to make a positive impact in the world by using my knowledge and skills to help others, give back to my community, and promote diversity and inclusion. I believe that by working together, we can create a more equitable and just society for all.
GD Sandeford Memorial Scholarship
As a computer science graduate, I believe I have a lot to offer my community through my technical skills and knowledge. I have always been passionate about using technology to solve real-world problems and make people's lives easier. In this regard, I believe there are several ways that I could use my degree to help others in my community.
One way I could use my computer science degree to help others is by volunteering my time and expertise to local non-profit organizations. Many non-profit organizations struggle with managing their data, and they often lack the resources to hire a full-time IT professional. By offering my technical expertise, I could help these organizations optimize their use of technology, streamline their data management processes, and improve their overall efficiency. This could help these organizations save time and money, allowing them to focus more on their core mission.
Another way I could use my computer science degree to help others in my community is by developing software applications that address specific needs within the community. For example, I could develop a mobile application that helps people find and connect with local resources, such as food banks, job training programs, or medical clinics. I could also develop software applications that help improve access to education, such as by creating online learning platforms or developing interactive educational games for children.
In addition to these direct applications of my technical skills, I could also use my computer science degree to raise awareness about important issues within my community. For example, I could develop data visualizations or interactive simulations that help people better understand the impacts of climate change on their local environment. I could also develop applications or games that educate people about important social justice issues, such as inequality, discrimination, or police brutality.
Ultimately, the ways in which I use my computer science degree to help others in my community will depend on the specific needs and opportunities within my local context. However, I am confident that my technical skills and knowledge will be valuable assets in any situation, and I look forward to finding ways to use them to make a positive impact in my community.
Volunteer your skills: Look for local organizations that need computer science expertise and offer to volunteer your skills. For example, you could offer to help a local non-profit organization set up a website, develop a mobile app, or manage their social media accounts.
Teach coding classes: Consider teaching coding classes to students in your community, especially those from underrepresented backgrounds. You could work with local schools or community centers to organize coding workshops or mentorship programs.
Develop community-focused applications: Identify community needs and develop applications that can address them. For instance, you could develop an app that helps local farmers manage their crops or an app that connects volunteers with local organizations that need their help.
Participate in hackathons: Join local hackathons or coding challenges that focus on community issues. These events bring together developers, designers, and community leaders to collaborate on solutions to local challenges.
Mentor aspiring computer scientists: Offer mentorship to aspiring computer scientists in your community. This could be through one-on-one mentoring or by participating in group mentorship programs.
Remember, the key to making an impact in my community with my computer science degree is to identify the needs of my community and use my skills to address them.
Ms. Susy’s Disney Character Scholarship
My favorite character, may I suggest is a very interesting one as you may all know. He is a funny, lovable and crazy character. He is none other than, wait for it, Tigger! I absolutely love tigger. When I was a little boy, I would spend the night at my great grandmother’s house and she would always let me watch movies til a certain time because of school. Well, most of those nights I would watch either brother bear or Winnie the Pooh- Many adventures with Winnie the Pooh.
The reason why I like Tigger so much is because none of the other characters were really brave and outgoing like Tigger. Yeah there’s Pooh who would stumble across some problems or go explore to find some honey, but never came close or compared to Tigger. I like how Tigger bounces with his tail and tries to enjoy and excite his friends in the hundred acre wood.
Tigger I believe is who motivated me as a kid to try new things, even if no one necessarily approves or agreed with it. Like how he was with Rabbit, tigger would bounce in him and say his stuff and Rabbit would just not have it with him. Rabbit was like a parent who would only be able to tolerate so much, and then or mostly then be focused on his duties and priorities almost to the point of stressing himself out, and of course he would even give in to Tigger sometimes or in the end of the film and have some fun.
In conclusion, I believe Tigger was ultimately my inspiration and motivation as a child when I was 5-8 years old at the time. In elementary I would always talk about Tigger and at the time no one really judged you or you knowing and realizing whatever you do or say is weird. But yes, to answer this essay’s question, my favorite childhood Disney character is none other than Tigger himself.
Chris Jackson Computer Science Education Scholarship
How I became and grew an interest in to pursuing a computer science degree is mainly how my childhood was. I grew up playing video games (Nintendo dsi, wii, PlayStation, Xbox, even sega genesis). It was the fun and pleasure of watching a little device do amazing things is what caught my attention. Now that I’m older, I can see more things now and I realize it isn’t as easy as I thought it would have been, but I realize that it is a wonderful field to get into. My mom passed away when I was 4 years of age, but on her death bed, she recorded a video of herself telling me how she’ll miss me and at the end of the video, she told me how she wanted me to grow up into a good man that will go into a good field so that I may have a successful life and not have to worry and/or struggle. I believe computer science is the best degree out there right now because everything is all going to technology, we rely more on technology now and are still learning more about it and growing than 10, 20 years ago and still climbing today and in the near future.
My goal after recieving my degree is to pursue a position in the it field and climb up the business ladder through there and work until I retire, or become a ceo of a tech company and start a business related to tech like Tesla but instead of for car it will be something else used daily but techified.
I feel I am the best candidate to receive this scholarship mainly because I am and will put in the work and effort to pass my classes, achieve my degree and just do what I am supposed to and things that will help me instead of hurt me.
Interdisciplinary Technology Scholarship
I’m passionate about technology because its about building better tools. Tools by definition help you do work. And the work that we’re doing is ultimately about people. I make web sites that help small businesses connect to their customers and non-profits connect to their members. I obsess over the newest gadgets for my smart home, but it’s not about the gadgets, it’s about enhancing and enriching my family’s home life.
I was around 7 y.o. when my family got the 1st computer, I barely knew how to read in spanish but everything was in english, still my dad got Fifa 09 and when he left for work I got to play with the new toy. Sound often broke but I wanted to use those awesome 2 channel speakers, so I started messing with the IRQ settings and when I got it working I began "fixing" everything in the computer (read changing icons, passwords, backgrounds....). I think thats when it clicked for me.
Technology is a broad brush. It’s not just a physical tool-set of gadgets, or even science; but our arts, politics and culture as well. And it’s change that motivates me. The incremental accumulation of knowledge that may result in new tools and techniques.
The massive access to knowledge around the world excites me the most. It is like having a library card or membership for all the greatest libraries and museums on earth. I love the thrill of sharing knowledge and seeing someone light up as they realize what they are learning applies to them and their world in profound ways. During the years I taught, I particularly treasured those moments when I could see a potentially brilliant student awaken from the gray malaise or fog they had been wandering through. A few became professors. Some became clinicians. There were also many nurses and teachers. Of these, a fair number had been labeled as dullards in our primary and secondary educational systems. I am very proud of all these individuals—and of the small part I played in helping them reach their potential.
Technology has the ability to impact lives at a level and scale that has never been realized in the history of mankind. The idea that something I create can impact someone across the world now, or in the future is what drives my passion for Technology. And, with skill and hard work - anyone can do it.
I’m also passionate about helping people, so a doctor.
Overall, I think these two could come together in the future by advancing in the modern tech we have today such as xrays, the general use of computers in doctors offices, lasers, etc. Technology can help me achieve my passions in this other field by becoming knowledgeable in how the different equipment function and learning how to use it to learn medical procedures as well.
Jae'Sean Tate BUILT Scholarship
When I was born, I was premature and the doctors told my parents I would be blind, deaf, retarded and have major complications and be more prone to diseases than the average person. My grandma didn’t believe them and prayed to God for me. 2 years later, I was better and ever since my grandma would always say, “look how big he is!” My mom always wanted kids, and was scared of losing me. She was able to enjoy me as her son for a little while until she passed from leukemia when I was 4 years old. She recorded a video of herself in the hospital that she’d want me to become something great and pursue a great paying field like becoming a doctor or lawyer and maybe even the president. I chose to go into computer science to learn more about tech and coding because egrets where everything is going and what I’m passionate about.
I believe I will be a great candidate for this scholarship because I will put in the work through good and bad times and allow it to help pay off any student debt and my tuition so I can achieve a higher education and strive to be something great like my mom wanted me to. I learned that no matter what happens, when things don’t go your way or you feel like it’s all over, you should never give up and to keep pushing harder and makes little tweaks so that you can avoid making the same mistakes.
Charles Cheesman's Student Debt Reduction Scholarship
I grew up with a single parent. My mom passed away when I was 4. She wanted me to pursue a good education that will set me up to be successful and so I chose to pursue computer science. I’m currently pursuing an associates and after that a good chance I will pursue a bachelors. The career aspirations I have are to be able to learn how to code and program computers. I have interned at my friend’s dad’s Computer repair shop where they help citizens fix their broken computers and it’s software. My major accomplishments are being able to install RAM into my computer and being able to run 49 sec (pr) in the 400m dash. What I plan on doing with the money I save by laying down student loans is use it to pay for my tuition and to pursue a higher education such as a bachelors and/or masters.
Debra Victoria Scholarship
Living in a single parent household has shaped my career goals by my deceased parent always wanting me to strive for more. Living with my dad has greatly improved my career goal by me being a kid playing video games sparked my interest into pursuing the tech field. Becoming curious with different equipment inside the computer has also made me become interested into digging more into computer technology and programming. Looking ahead into the future, I definitely don’t see technology going away anytime soon, especially with how fast it is advancing. I believe with the more practice and interest I develop into the computer science field, the better I will become at it.
I plan on pursuing these goals during college by taking my time on studying the different algorithms in coding and pay attention in class. I will also have to practice with the different codes and software features available to me so I will be able to master the technique of coding whether in python, sql, or c++, I want to make sure I am fully equipped and prepared for whatever my career will throw at me in the future. In the time after college, I will continue to sharpen my skills during the career and whenever I get off work by working on code and algorithms for practice. I plan on going into the Air Force for cyber security or maybe as small as drone flying.
Living in a single parent home has been emotionally and physically stressful. I believe living in a single parent household can be looked at as a negative due to the loss and extra work that has to be put in, but it can also be looked at as a positive because it caused me to grow up faster and mature more as a kid/ young adult compared to a house hold that has both parents still. I plan on arriving to do well in my studies and career goals because that’s what I was taught growing up living in my single parent household was to never give up.
Computer programming isn’t easy and may be stressful at some times, but in the end it, I believe it is well worth the hardships and mistakes being made because you may learn from them, thus making you stronger and abounding making the same mistakes over and over again, especially through studies in college.
