My favorite Disney character is the Princess Aroura. I always loved Sleeping Beauty as a kid, and when my sister and I played dress-up, you bet the first thing I went for was my pink Aroura gown and tiara. Sleeping Beauty was my favorite from the beginning because of the pink dress and the dancing, and the three fairies that made me laugh so much! But when I got a little older, I started taking ballet, I found out that my favorite movie used a score written by Tchaikovsky for a ballet! Add to that my own growing love for music and singing, and now I was waltzing around my house belting "Once Upon a Dream" to anyone who would listen-and quite a few who would probably rather not. But as an adult, my favorite princess is still Aroura. Not just because of the stunning visual art of the movie, or because of the nostalgia of loving it as a kid, but because of what I learned from Aroura. That may surprise you because even though she's the main character, the princess herself has very little screen time in her own movie. In that short amount of time, what could she possibly do that I found so inspiring? And the answer is this: her duty. When Aroura is told she is a princess, and can't marry the handsome man she fell in love with, she is devastated. But although she is sad, she doesn't run away from her problem. The next scene shows her going with the fairies to the castle to take on the role of princess. Now, a lot of what Disney tells us nowadays is to follow your heart, and that each person has to do what is right for themselves. But I've found that often, listening to the counsel of those who care about me often works out better than my own plans would have. That's why I love Aroura so much. She wasn't just a pushover who did whatever anyone told her-she had feelings, and cried, and was upset! But in the end, she chose to do her duty- to be a princess and lead her people- instead of running off to do what her heart told her. And I find that self-sacrificing attitude to be much more beautiful than choosing her heart over her people.
