I am a high school senior preparing for my journey to gain financial literacy, expand my opportunities and begin networking. I come from a low-income, single-mother household. I have previously been accepted to prestigious universities throughout the nation. Due to financial constraints, I cannot afford tuition and fees for these universities. To pursue higher education, my funding will be heavily reliant on scholarships, grants, and loans. I plan to major in Biology to aid in my career choice of being an obstetrician-gynecologist or Dermatologist. I hoped to be honored with numerous scholarships to continue my education and break the experience of living in a financially unstable environment.

Pursuing higher education will be a breakthrough for me, my mother, and the community. Unfortunately, as a low-income student, this is a negative factor when wanting to continue my education for my career goal. I thought the hardest part was getting accepted into my school choices, but the complicated issue is the enrolling process. After viewing the tuition and fees from my college choices me and my mother took a step back and wondered if I can settle for a college that I preferred to attend. Of course, this scholarship wouldn't give me a full ride alone. However, still has many benefits such as giving me the financial means to attend my prestigious university choice, decreasing the number of student loans needed, won't have to depend on federal work-study or part-time job, giving me more time to focus on my education than working, would be a contributor to my long term goal for my career goal, etc. I'm working to be a better woman by focusing on what I can control now and dismissing talking about what I can't change. While transitioning into my first year of high school, I experience abandonment from my close blood relatives, watching my mom strive with me along her side, from being homeless to living in low-income apartments. With all this going on, I kept my mind intact to keep my spirit and grades up. I don't know how I kept my composure through the tough challenges, but I did it. That experience helped me realize how strong-minded I am and know I can achieve my future dream. Now that I'm a senior, preparing for adulthood, My ongoing goal is to wake up by taking action to secure my future. With little knowledge, I was still determining what I wanted to do in the future while in middle school. However, one day my counselor pulled me out of class and asked me what job I wanted to do in the future. My response was to be an accountant since my mother was one, and I admire everything about my mother, so I decided to follow in her footsteps to be like the strong woman she is. My counselor then asked me if my mother wasn't an accountant, what would I want to be then? I told her being a doctor has been my desire too. She educated me on the different types of doctors, and OBGYNs stood out to me. To bring a new life into this world and assist the mother through her pregnancy. Also, to have the privilege of supporting us women every day is an honor. While entering high school, dermatology was another career that caught my interest. While researching each job, I understood that majoring in Biology is recommended to meet medical school requirements for my career interests. I won't sit here and say this won't be a challenge because science is not my brightest subject, but I'm willing to take that battle to pursue my dream. I would be grateful to be honored with this scholarship to increase my chance in the long run of accomplishing my goal. Thank you for taking the time to read my essay.

To be honored with several scholarships to continue my education and secure my future, my academic goal is to major in biology to benefit my career path of being a future Dermatologist or Obstetrician-gynecologist. My previous advocacy for social change should be valued more by people looking from the outside; now, I can explain my positive contribution. When the last bell rang for school, I looked forward to volunteering at Families of Slain Children Inc. (FOSCI). A non-profit organization that aids the community with the loss of loved ones from homicide has impacted and kept the fallen angels' names alive. Supplies families with clothes, food, water, books, toys, school supplies, etc. Educate the youth affected by homicide and lead them to a productive path than be influenced by their rough neighborhood. I'm no therapist. I was young-minded and didn't have those harsh experiences those children witnessed, but I was a great listener to the young kids who needed to vent. Just know that I got many laughs from them and built bonds with different personalities. Later, I joined a Girls Inc club, excited to be on another journey to create more friends, participate in more leadership roles, and help the girls in the club. Within three months, I was voted vice president and gained the administrator's trust by being present daily, taking my vice president role seriously, and engaging in most events. I am currently an intern for my previous geometry teacher, and the experience benefits me, the teacher, and the students. I assist the classroom when the teacher is occupied and also give him more time on his hands while I help him with some of his duties, I create many connections with most of the students, and even when they have a rough day, I can steer them back on track while just being me. I do my best to engage with most students to be more than an intern but their mentor, friend, and shoulder to lean on. My previous teacher is now family; while asking him if I am beneficial to his classroom, he explained that the days I missed, he and the student would agree the life of the party is gone, and class is not the same without me. People laugh at me that I am my previous teacher intern now, but they only look from the outside and don't realize how much I am appreciated. Through my career choices, their only a target of people I can help, but that won't stop me from continuing to aid my community. I reached more than 1,000 volunteering hours in events and wish to continue that throughout my years in college, medical school, and so on. Even being less fortunate myself, I admire helping one another to let each other know where not riding through the struggle alone. When I succeed, I wish to create scholarships similar to this to aid many low-income students who seek to pursue higher education to reach their professional goals and to break the experience of constantly depending on others to survive.
