Ryan Stripling “Words Create Worlds” Scholarship for Young Writers
I have always been a writer; I have always had the gift to pull words out of thin air. Ever since I was young, I loved to tell stories. I'd create plays and storybooks, proudly showing them off to anyone that I could. Real or fake, long or short, it didn't matter the story; what did matter was that it was my own. I think that, in truth, it was never a love for words at first, it was a love for something that could make others relate to me.
Words motivate people, that much it true. It's a fact to the point that Kairos started to be debated: The connection between the main three rhetorical devices. I think that the written word can form a personality. What you read may shape who you become; the writing transcends the page and leaves an imprint on your morals, your character, your beliefs... It's extraordinary.
Writing breaks down complex ideas, or expands upon them. It takes a like mind to understand another's writing. That's why some people don't get Shakespeare, or Poe, or Sexton: They just don't relate to their emotions or whatever emotion the author wishes to convey. That's why reading and writing outside of your bubble is important; that's why taking in new perspectives shapes your own.
My younger self loved how writing made others view me in a different light. She loved how even those who could never understand me, could understand my writing. It became a common medium... Eventually, growing into a passion; a love for the English language, the uses of rhetoric, grammar, spelling... Oh, I could go on. In fact, I never plan to stop. Writing is my life, and will continue to be so into the depths of my college career.
College: A daunting idea, really. But, I am studying my passion. I aspire to become a publisher. I want to help others get their opinions into the public's eye. I want to help expand societal beliefs and push past the norms. I am going to study creative writing at my dream university, developing my writing style and tone; to make it more reader friendly. I intend to do well and express myself; I want to be heard and seen. I am en route to understanding myself in the way that writing has...
To summarize the length of this essay, and shorten my ramblings: Yes, I love writing. It helps me connect with people. It helps people relate to me. In college I plan to learn how to convey meaning more efficiently. But, in the end, writing is, and always has been, my best friend. And, that will never change.
