When I was just 11 year old I was diagnosed with General Anxiety Disorder. At the time I had no clue what this meant and to be honest I didn't care because I was too anxious to even want to know what it was. Every night was a struggle because I didn't not want to go to bed due to being anxious about what the next day would hold. In the morning I would sob because of feeling physically ill from all of the fear that filled me. I wondered if this would ever end. Would the doctors ever figure out what was wrong with me? Would my parents ever understand that I just couldn't take it anymore? Does this medicine even work? These were questions that would continually flood my brain along with all of the other "what if's". Panic attacks were something that I dealt with on almost a daily occurrence. When I would have one, the rest of my day would be ruined. I would plead to go home and relax for the rest of the day. Most of the panic attacks would happen at school. I barely remember anything about 6th grade. All I can remember is crying at school and having classmates ask me why I was never there. School was one of the biggest mental struggles that I had to overcome. I not only had anxiety about going to school, but also what the other student would say to me. Due to having a past of being bullied multiple times, comments and actions from others were one of my big stressors. After many prayers, counselors, and pills; I can finally say that I have learned how to control my anxiety. I believe that everyone has some anxiety at one point or another, even if it is not severe. I have been impacted greatly by a mental health struggle, which is why I want to pursue a career with helping those who are also affected. In college, I will continue to participate in the Mental Health Awareness clubs. I plan on majoring in psychology and then minoring in Spanish. With the Spanish minor, I will be able to reach more people. I will also continue to participate and advocate for National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI). I hope to help as many people struggling with mental health as I can. As well as save lives of those who were in the spot when they don't know how much longer they can live in that struggle; just as I was.
